Rs 25K fine on Cuttack ADM for delaying Top Ramen noodles case
CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court on Friday imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the additional district magistrate-cum-adjudicating authority, Cuttack, for the inordinate delay in adjudicating a case against Indo Nissin Foods Pvt. Ltd, a multinational fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company, over alleged food safety violations related to a popular brand of noodles Top Ramen.
The case was instituted on the basis of a report submitted by the Food Safety Officer following testing of samples of a particular brand of noodles seized from the depot of the company in Cuttack in 2015. The report raised concerns over the presence of monosodium glutamate (MSG), prompting initiation of adjudication proceedings.
The company filed a petition before the ADM on November 1, 2016, seeking dismissal of the proceedings on the ground that it was arbitrary, unlawful, and in violation of the order issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on March 31, 2016.
The FSSAI had clarified that glutamate occurs naturally in several foods, and current analytical methods cannot conclusively distinguish between naturally occurring and added MSG. Enforcement, it added, should only proceed when a product explicitly claims 'No MSG' or 'No Added MSG' and MSG is later detected.

Manish alias Max, 26, received a life sentence for raping a 10-year-old national judo player in Meerut, special public prosecutor Kuldeep Mohan said. The additional district judge Sangeeta, who goes by her first name, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. Special public prosecutor Avkash Jain told TOI, "The convict violated the girl in the guard room while her brother and fellow players were asked to practise. After the crime, the minor bled profusely, and Max, in a cynical attempt to conceal his crime, staged a drama; he told the minor's parents that she sustained a severe injury during practice." He added, "Believing the convict's theory, the minor was rushed to a medical facility and underwent treatment in three different hospitals, and after eight days, she secretly wrote her ordeal on a paper, which somehow reached her father. Upon this, an FIR was lodged at Kankar Khera police station under relevant sections of IPC and Pocso Act in June 2023." Additional district govt counsel Manoj Gupta said, "The incident occurred on Sept 9, 2017, when the boy was in his school where the convict was appointed as judo coach. Mohd Qasim took the boy to the forest on the pretext of judo training, where he forcefully sodomised him. The boy narrated his ordeal to his family about the incident upon returning home. Subsequently, an FIR against the convict was registered at Katghar police station under the sections of sodomy and the Pocso Act. " He added, "The submitted medical examination report to the court confirmed the assault. Additionally, the statement of the survivor and the circumstantial evidence helped in nailing the accused." The chargesheet was submitted in court, and the judge expedited the trial. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court found Ali guilty and ordered his immediate custody. Sonam Raghuvanshi Hid Weapon, Jewellery At Indore Property; Two Arrested For Aiding Her
Last Updated: Two more suspects, a property dealer and a security guard, were arrested for helping Sonam Raghuvanshi conceal evidence in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. Two more people, a property dealer and a security guard, were arrested on Saturday in connection with the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. According to the details, the property dealer was arrested for concealing a jewellery box belonging to Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife and the prime accused in the case. The box was hidden in a flat in Indore after the murder last month, it was known. Commenting on the arrests, East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem said, 'The Meghalaya Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested one Silome James from Bhonrasa toll-gate in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh while he was trying to flee to Bhopal around 7.30 pm on Saturday." 'He is a property dealer and lessee of a building at Heera Bagh Colony in Indore, where Sonam had stayed and kept the jewellery and other items she took with her after the incident," he said. Later, the SIT nabbed a security guard, identified as Balla Ahirwar, from his native village in Ashok Nagar district of Madhya Pradesh around 2 am on Sunday. He was posted at the property. The box is believed to have contained key evidence linked to the murder, PTI quoted sources as saying. The arrested property dealer led the SIT to the place where he had disposed of all the items of the box by burning, the officer said. A member of the SIT said that Sonam's boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, owned a firearm, and this was kept at the property along with jewellery and a laptop. At the site where James had burnt the box, there were no signs of the pistol, laptop or any of the jewellery belonging to Raja, he said, adding that a forensic team had also visited the spot and collected all available evidence. The flat was rented out to murder co-accused Vishal Chauhan by James, who runs a property management firm in Indore, they said. On June 13, James told reporters that Chauhan approached him on May 30 and rented the flat for Rs 17,000 per month, signing a formal agreement. However, when the Meghalaya Police later searched the flat, it was found vacant, as per the sources. Sonam stayed in the flat for several days on return from Meghalaya, before eventually surrendering to police in UP on June 8, the sources said. James and Ahirwar were produced before a court in Indore, which remanded them in the transit custody of Meghalaya Police for seven days, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Rajesh Dandotiya said. Indore-based transport businessman Raghuvanshi married Sonam on May 11 in Indore, and the couple left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20. The couple went missing on May 23, and Raja Raghuvanshi's mutilated body was recovered on June 2 from a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra area of East Khasi Hills district. Raja was hacked to death by three men using two machetes near a secluded parking lot close to the famous Weisawdong falls in Sohra, it was later revealed. Sonam, accused of conspiring with her alleged lover to kill her husband, surrendered on June 8 before the police in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district, while four other accused have been arrested from different locations in MP and UP. The Meghalaya Police had earlier arrested five persons in connection with the murder — Sonam, her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and the latter's three friends Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi. Knives out for kulfi, cash, phone: Trio robs Delhi ice cream parlour; robbers flee
NEW DELHI: Three unidentified masked men looted an ice cream parlour in Delhi's Keshavpuram area, escaping with cash, mobile phones, and several packets of ice cream and kulfi, police said on Sunday. The robbery took place around 11pm on Saturday at a shop on Talab Road. According to police, the incident was captured on CCTV, and multiple teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the accused. "Two men were holding knives and wearing face masks. They came on a motorcycle and barged into our parlour. They threatened us, forcing my brother to sit in a corner while one was guarding, another looted everything -- cash, mobile phones and ice creams," said Narender, the owner of ice cream parlour. CCTV footage from the scene shows the trio stuffing bags with frozen items within seconds before escaping on the same motorcycle. The footage is under review, and efforts are under way to identify the accused. The shop owner estimated the total loss, including stolen stock, at Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000. One grabbed him from behind while the other assaulted him and snatched his mobile phone and Rs 520 in cash. Prasad fell and suffered a head injury. A PCR call was received at the Netaji Subhash Place (NSP) Police Station, and one of the suspects was caught at the scene by bystanders, police added. "While one of the accused managed to flee, the other was overpowered by locals and handed over to police," said a police officer. The arrested accused has been identified as 18-year-old Suraj, a resident of Shakarpur, police said. The stolen cash was recovered from his possession, and efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest his associate, they added.
