Leader Live09-06-2025

A member of one of the most famous racing families in Yorkshire, he trained with great success on the Flat and over jumps before retiring in 1996.
He was succeeded by his son, Tim, while his brother Mick still shares a licence today with his own son, David, with many other members of the family involved in racing.
Tim Easterby announced on X: 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my father Peter Easterby.
'He passed away peacefully in his own home with his family by his side.
'A true gentleman, legendary racehorse trainer, passionate farmer, lover of country sports and an incredibly proud father and grandfather.'
Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse were both dual Champion Hurdle winners, while Easterby also won two Gold Cups with Alverton in 1979 and Little Owl in 1981.
Proving his versatility, Easterby also sent out Sea Pigeon to win the Ebor off top weight and the Chester Cup twice, while Night Nurse finished second to Little Owl in the Gold Cup, narrowly failing to become the first horse to win the two biggest prizes at the Cheltenham Festival.
Saucy Kit was another Champion Hurdle winner in 1967 for Easterby and for a time his five wins in the race were a record.
His notable Flat triumphs included the Kings's Stand Stakes with Goldhill, the Gimcrack with Sonnen Gold, two Lincolns and three Ayr Gold Cups.
Easterby sent out over 2,500 winners during his lengthy career and Tim Easterby is still based at Habton Grange.

Celtic star stunned by Rangers legend in red-faced return to action against minnows

Alistair Johnston has back on the grass for Canada after missing his crucial spot kick at Hampden against Aberdeen Alistair Johnston had another nightmare on his return to action as 77-year-old former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat pulled off a shock against Canada. The Hoops defender missed the crucial final penalty in the Scottish Cup Final which meant Aberdeen won the trophy at Hampden last month. ‌ He was nursing a minor back injury and recently tied the knot with new wife Peyton before heading off on honeymoon to St Lucia. ‌ But it was on another Caribbean he returned to action this weekend at the Gold Cup against minnows Curacao, who are now managed by Advocaat, after he came out of retirement for the fifth time to take charge of his eighth international country earlier this year. But after coming on as a late sub, he gave the ball away to former PSV Eindhoven striker Jeremy Antonisse deep into injury time who netted to claim a remarkable 1-1 draw in Houston and kick off off scenes of celebration for the tiny nation. Advocaat - who has now managed the Netherlands three times, Belgium, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Iraq, UAE and now Curacao - said: "That was a great achievement for us to get a draw against a huge country like Canada. But it was the least we deserved and credit to the players." Canada had gone ahead inside the opening 10 minutes thanks to Nathan Saliba's early strike but Antonisse grabbed a goal in the fouth minute of added time to spark wild scenes. The result leaves Canada top of the section with four points from two games and Curacao currently sit third with two points on the board. They trail Honduras in second spot in the section by a point. Johnston was absent for the tournament opener against Honduras, as well as the recent friendlies against Ukraine and Ivory Coast. Last night was his 54th cap and it was a rare mistake from the right-back who is usually Mr Reliable at the back for Canada. Canada still sit top of Group B with four points, while Advocaat's side are sitting in third - one point behind Honduras - with two points. Canada lifted the cup back in 2000 and will be hoping to replicate that triumph this year with their current crop of top stars. They reached the semi-final in 2021 and Johnston was involved in the squad after being called up to the senior team for the first time in January that year. The final of this year's competition will be played on July 7 - three days after Celtic are due to face Queen's Park in a pre-season friendly. Paralysed jockey details the ‘glimmer of light' that has given him hope

The once star rider who won the Grand National over jumps and Gold Cup on the Flat, but now has no movement from the neck down, has opened up about the challenges he now faces Graham Lee has revealed he is holding on to a 'glimmer of light' that could put an end to the brutal reality of his life since he suffered life-changing injuries in a racing fall. The 49-year-old was left paralysed from the neck down after sustaining an unstable cervical fracture which damaged his spinal cord when he came off exiting the stalls at Newcastle in November 2023. Lee was a highly successful jockey who became the only rider to win both the Grand National at Aintree and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot during a career in which he excelled at both jumps and on the Flat. ‌ Now he needs round-the-clock care and regularly visits Jack Berry House in Malton, Yorkshire, the Injured Jockeys' Fund rehab facility which celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. ‌ Funds are also being raised for the ex-jockey through the The Graham Lee Racing Club. Club horse We've Got This won for the first time at Redcar on Friday. Lee's latest visit to Jack Berry House was to attend the ten year anniversary celebration event. "This is an amazing place run by amazing people," he said, in a Racing Post interview."Racing can be a very lonely place. As a jockey, you're permanently hungry, you're doing loads of miles and you have to deal with defeat every day. 'Racing can be tough but when you get something like what happened to me, it comes together like no other sport. I've been humbled by the support and love I've received. I've been blown away by it, to be honest." Lee, who rode Amberleigh House to win the 2004 Grand National and Trip To Paris to win the Gold Cup in 2015, went on to describe his new life, which in September last year close friend Sir Anthony McCoy said was 'horrific'. ‌ Lee said: 'Don't get me wrong, I know there are people worse off than me, but with my injury, every day is groundhog day. "You think, how am I going to get through today? You see no light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how small the tunnel is, you don't see a glimmer, but then Becks found something on Facebook the other day about an operation you can have in China. 'After Jack read about it, he said, 'It looks like we're going to China, then'. I wouldn't think it will happen but it's a glimmer of light, a little bit of hope." ‌ He went on: "I was a very moderate rider who was told, 'You can't and you won't,' but yet I did. I had lots of broken bones and plenty of head injuries along the way but my body always overcame the obstacles. It always healed. This ain't healing. "That makes me angry at my body, which is probably very unfair because my body is okay, it's just the spinal cord that is broken. I'm angry because in the past my body collapsed but then came back. At the minute, there is no coming back. "When you're a jockey, you always dream of getting on that one horse who will take you to the next level. My situation is the same. I'm hoping and I'm dreaming. That's what keeps us going. "I'm just hoping that somewhere, some day, there will be that glimmer of light."
