Assembly Bypoll Result 2025 Live Updates: The counting of votes for bypolls in five assembly constituencies across four states, including two in Gujarat and one each in Bengal, Kerala and Punjab, will begin at 8 am. The bypolls were held on June 19, with the Nilambur constituency in Kerala recording the highest voter turnout at 73.26 per cent. The overall turnout went as high as 70 per cent. The by-elections in Kerala and Bengal are seen as precursor to the big assembly elections in both the states next year. New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, on his death anniversary, lauding his "incomparable courage" and "invaluable contribution" to nation-building. Mr Mookerjee, a prominent nationalist leader and a key figure in post-independence India, is remembered for his fierce opposition to Article 370 and for playing a central role in the movement to integrate Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. According to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) official website, he died "for the cause of integrating Kashmir with the rest of India." Paying homage on X, Prime Minister Modi posted, "Tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his martyrdom day. He displayed incomparable courage and effort to keep the integrity of the country intact. Mr Mookerjee had been detained for 45 days for violating Article 370, which at the time mandated that Indian citizens obtain a permit to enter Jammu and Kashmir. His arrest and subsequent death in custody on June 23, 1953, sent shockwaves across the country. The permit system was later abolished, and the slogan that resonated across the country then was "Nahi Chalengey ek desh mein do Vidhan, do pradhan aur do nishan" (There will not be two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two flags in one country). Mr Mookerjee, who had turned to public agitation outside Parliament to express his opposition to Article 370, had strongly criticised the arrangement as the "Balkanisation of India" and equated it to the "three-nation theory" of Sheikh Abdullah. According to the BJP website, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, along with the Hindu Mahasabha and the Ram Rajya Parishad, launched a major Satyagraha movement demanding the abrogation of the "pernicious provisions" of Article 370. In May 1953, Mr Mookerjee attempted to enter Jammu and Kashmir without a permit and was arrested on May 11. He died in custody on June 23, 1953.

Gujarat By-Election 2025 Result Live: BJP's Rajendra Chavda leads big in Kadi after Round 7 of counting
The BJP's Rajendra Chavda is leading in Kadi with 13,195 votes after seven rounds of counting have been completed. He has polled 29,870 votes as compared to Congress candidate Ramesh Chavda's 16,675 votes. BJP candidate Kirit Patel is leading in Visavadar with 16,881 votes after five rounds of counting. AAP's Gopal Italia is closely following him with 15,901 votes, while the Congress's Nitin Ranpariya is third with 1,375 votes. After six rounds of counting, BJP candidate Rajendra Chavda has opened a big lead over his Congress and AAP rivals, having polled 26,005 votes on the Kadi Assembly seat. The Congress's Ramesh Chavda has 14,047 votes, while the AAP's Jagdish Chavda has polled just 794 votes. BJP candidate Rajendra Chavda has further extended his lead in the Kadi Assembly seat of Gujarat with 21,584 votes after Round 5. He was ahead of the Congress's Ramesh Chavda who got 11,137 votes and AAP's Jagdish Chavda, who was a distant third with 654 votes. BJP candidate Kirit Patel has moved ahead of AAP's Gopal Italia in the Visavadar Assembly seat after the third round of counting of votes. Patel now has 10,486 votes ahead of Italia's 10,336. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Gopal Italia is leading with just 391 votes in Gujarat's Visavadar Assembly seat, having polled 7,179 votes after the second round of counting. The BJP's Kirit Patel is second with 6,788 votes, while Congress's Nitin Ranpariya is a distant third with just 529 votes. BJP candidate Rajendra Chavda is leading in Kadi Assembly seat after two rounds of counting have been completed. He has so far polled 8,232 votes ahead of Congress candidate Ramesh Chavda, who has got 4,235 votes. The contest could reveal the Dalit community's voting patterns in the region. The Election Commission of India will announce the results of the Kadi and Visavadar Assembly bypolls today. Karnataka and LK Advani's jail stint during Emergency
Bengaluru: 'I boarded an aeroplane for the first time in November 1975,' BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar says with biting sarcasm, recalling the trauma of the Emergency imposed by then prime minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, which suspended civil liberties across the country. Kumar, then a young political activist, was arrested and subjected to brutal treatment at Bengaluru's High Grounds Police Station before being shifted to Bengaluru Central Jail, where he spent 15 months. The 'aeroplane' punishment, he explained, involved having one's hands tied behind the back and being hoisted upward—an ordeal causing unbearable pain. The 21-month Emergency cast a long, dark shadow over democratic institutions nationwide, and Karnataka was no exception. Press censorship, mass arrests under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), and a climate of fear reshaped the political and social landscape of the state. Among the notable detenus was senior BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, who was imprisoned in Bengaluru during this period. His incarceration, along with that of other national leaders, became a defining chapter in the resistance against authoritarianism. Suresh Kumar, a former Minister, said the Emergency forged his political identity. 'I was part of the agitation from the time the Emergency was declared,' he said. He recalled participating in a protest at Mysore Bank Circle on June 26, 1975—perhaps the first significant anti-Emergency demonstration in Karnataka. Surprisingly, no arrests were made that day. Soon after, on July 4, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Jamaat-e-Islami, and 11 other political organisations were banned. Kumar said Karnataka's Congress government, led by Chief Minister D Devaraj Urs, implemented Emergency directives with near-total obedience to Delhi. Urs, remembered for land reforms and championing backward classes, oversaw a regime that clamped down harshly on dissent. Opposition leaders—from the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and Lok Dal to Socialists—were systematically jailed, silenced, or harassed. Journalists, student leaders, and trade unionists were among those detained as Karnataka mirrored the Centre's authoritarian streak. RSS leader Suresh Naik Ankola, who was jailed alongside Kumar, said L K Advani's imprisonment was one of the most symbolic. Then a rising Bharatiya Jana Sangh figure, Advani was arrested shortly after the Emergency began. Initially detained in Delhi, he was transferred to Bengaluru Central Jail, where he spent much of his jail term. Advani later said his belief in constitutional democracy strengthened during the emergency when he was jailed. Late veteran socialist leader George Fernandes, known for his deep roots in Karnataka's labour movement, was declared an absconder and later arrested in the infamous Baroda dynamite case. 'The Bengaluru jail became an unlikely incubator of political thought, resilience, and inter-party bonding,' Kumar observed, recalling the shared spirit of resistance among the jailed. Despite heavy suppression, silent forms of protest thrived. Underground pamphlets, clandestine poetry, and hushed intellectual resistance echoed through cities like Bengaluru, Dharwad, Mysuru, and Mangaluru. Kumar said he was arrested while trying to hand a pamphlet to a visiting foreign delegation to alert them about the state of affairs in India. According to him, a miscalculation by Indira Gandhi's loyalists led her to call for elections in 1977—a decision that proved fatal for the Congress in the north. 'While the Congress was routed elsewhere, it still found solid support in south India, including Karnataka,' Kumar noted. He concluded by invoking Advani's famous remark about institutional complicity during the Emergency. 'When they were asked to bend, they began to crawl.'
