UK Foreign Secretary's visit provides opportunity to sustain high-level engagement, further consolidate India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
New Delhi [India], June 8 (ANI): UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy's visit to India provided a valuable opportunity to sustain the high-level engagement between the two countries and to further consolidate the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Ministry of External Affairs noted in a statement on Saturday.
As per the statement issued by the MEA, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy paid an official visit to India on June 7. This was his second official visit to India in his capacity as UK Foreign Secretary. During the visit, UK Foreign Secretary called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held delegation level talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar (EAM). He also met with Piyush Goyal, Commerce & Industry Minister and Ajit Doval, National Security Adviser.
The statement noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the recent conclusion of the India-UK FTA and Double Contribution Convention (DCC) as a strategic milestone in India-UK bilateral ties, which will further unlock potential of the partnership in diverse sectors. He conveyed that he is looking forward to the visit of UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to India at the earliest mutual convenience.
EAM Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Lammy reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation and expressed satisfaction at the progress in diverse sectors, including trade & economy, defence & security, technology & innovation, health, green energy & climate, education and people-to-people ties under our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Both Ministers welcomed the conclusion of the India-UK FTA and DCC. They also expressed happiness at the launch of the Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue, the first meeting of which was Co-Chaired by Vikram Misri, Foreign Secretary, MEA and Sir Oliver Robbins, Permanent Under-Secretary(PUS), Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office on June 3, the statement said.
EAM Jaishankar conveyed India's appreciation for the UK government's expression of solidarity and support to India in the fight against terrorism. Both Ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
'The visit provided a valuable opportunity to sustain the high-level engagement between the two countries and to further consolidate the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both sides agreed to continue working closely to advance their shared objectives', the statement said.
In a previous statement by the MEA on Foreign Secretary's meeting with PM Modi, it was noted, PM Modi expressed satisfaction at the successful conclusion of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement and Double Contribution Convention and appreciated the constructive engagement by both sides that led to this milestone.
PM Modi also welcomed the growing momentum in bilateral ties and expressed satisfaction at the deepening of the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He welcomed the continued collaboration under the Technology Security Initiative and noted its potential to shape trusted and secure innovation ecosystems.
The statement noted that Foreign Secreatary David Lammy conveyed UK's strong interest in further enhancing cooperation across key sectors including trade and investment, defence and security, technology, innovation, and clean energy. He expressed confidence that the FTA will unlock new economic opportunities for both countries.
Foreign Secretary Lammy also shared inputs from his visit to India in a series of posts on X.
Upon meeting PM Modi, Lammy wrote on X, 'Thank you Prime Minister @narendramodi for your warm welcome to India. Building on the free trade agreement between our great countries, we will continue working together to deepen our partnership, celebrate our unique living bridge, and deliver growth and security.'

Magnet crunch: Indian firms pitch supply chain plans to curb China's rare earth dominance
Facing a severe supply crunch of rare earth magnets after export restrictions imposed by China, several companies, including homegrown advanced material entities, have approached the Indian government with proposals to build in-house magnet supply chains, ToI reported. These companies have made presentations to the government, including the Ministry of Heavy Industries, assuring that they will build supplies within India to reduce dependence on China. 'The companies include Midwest Advanced Materials, Entellus Industries, and public sector Indian Rare Earths (IREL),' sources told The Times of India (ToI). The sources added that Heavy Industries Secretary Kamran Rizvi has also taken presentations from companies as the government begins planning strategies for building indigenous capabilities in magnet production.'Midwest Advanced Materials made a presentation about their plans to produce rare earth magnets in India with a capacity of 500 tonnes per annum. They forecast that by end of 2026, they will be able to produce custom-made rare earth magnets for the industry,' one of the sources said. 'They have told officials that their plant is ready to produce the magnetic powder but will still take some time to produce industry-grade magnets,' the source said. IREL, among the last to make its presentation, informed the government that it would be able to match China's pricing once production begins. 'However, the company said that ore present in Indian geography is 100 times less than in China, the US, and Australia,' the source also informed the government that magnet production in India had been shut down over the past two decades due to a flood of cheaper Chinese imports. According to sources, there is 'no clarity as yet' on any timeline for a confirmed meeting with Chinese government representatives, despite efforts by Indian applications for sourcing magnets have been filed mainly by component makers who manufacture high-tech, fully built assemblies such as speedometers, electric motors, e-axles, electric water pumps, automatic transmission kits, speakers, sensors, and ignition push for a meeting with Chinese authorities is being driven not just by industry bodies like the Auto Component Manufacturers Association and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, but is also being facilitated by ministry week, ToI reported that no Indian auto component or vehicle manufacturer had received approval from China to source rare earth magnets. This certificate must first be approved by India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Ministry of External Affairs. The scheme is expected to be approved in a fortnight, a senior government official told the publication. New Delhi: A month after his expulsion from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) over a Facebook post, Bihar MLA and former minister Tej Pratap Yadav has alleged that four to five party colleagues conspired to ensure his exit from the party. The 37-year-old said he would "face the situation" and stressed "no one would tolerate interference in their personal life." Tej Pratap Yadav was expelled last month after a row over a photograph shared on his Facebook account. In the photograph, he was seen with a woman. The post identified the woman as Anushka Yadav and said she and Tej Pratap were in a relationship for 12 years. "I am Tej Pratap Yadav and the girl seen with me in this picture is Anushka Yadav. We have known each other for the last 12 years and love each other deeply. We have been in a relationship throughout these years. I wanted to share this with all of you for a long time, but couldn't find the right words. Today, through this post, I am opening my heart to you. I hope you all will understand," it read. The post started a chatter, as people asked why Tej Pratap married in 2018 if he was in a relationship. The RJD leader married Aishwarya Rai, daughter of political heavyweight Chandrika Rai, in 2018. The couple separated months later and a divorce case is on. Amid this chatter, Tej Pratap claimed his profile had been hacked. "My social media platform was hacked and my photographs were edited wrongfully," he wrote on X. The next day, Tej Pratap's father and RJD patriarch Lalu Yadav announced the decision to expel him from the party. He said "ignoring moral values" in personal life weakens the community's struggle for social justice. If people try to suppress me, I will approach the court." The RJD leader urged the Bihar government to enhance his security cover and claimed a threat to his life. "I demand that the Bihar government increase my security as I feel there is a danger to my life." The remarks come amid political heat in Bihar, where elections are due in a few months. While the Nitish Kumar-led alliance of the BJP and JDU is looking to return to power, the RJD-Congress block is going all out to secure a win. Tej Pratap said that as an elder brother, he wants RJD's Tejashwi Yadav to become Bihar's Chief Minister. Earlier, when Lalu Yadav decided to expel Tej Pratap, Tejashwi had said some things "cannot be tolerated". "He (Tej Pratap) has the right to make his personal decisions. He is an adult and free to make decisions. Our party's chief has made it clear."

Bangladesh probe into Hasina-era abuses warns 'impunity' remains
Sheikh Hasina (Image: ANI) DHAKA: A Bangladesh government-appointed commission investigating hundreds of disappearances by the security forces under ousted premier Sheikh Hasina on Monday warned that the same "culture of impunity" continues. The Commission of Inquiry into Enforced Disappearances is probing abuses during the rule of Hasina, whose government was accused of widespread human rights abuses. That includes the extrajudicial killing of hundreds of political opponents and the unlawful abduction and disappearance of hundreds more. The commission was established by interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus , 84, who is facing intense political pressure as parties jostle for power ahead of elections expected early next year. Bangladesh has a long history of military coups and the army retains a powerful role. "Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh were not isolated acts of wrongdoing, but the result of a politicised institutional machinery that condoned, normalised, and often rewarded such crimes," the commission said, in a section of a report released by the interim government on Monday.
