Power demand surge to keep NTPC, Coal India, PowerGrid in limelight: Mayuresh Joshi
"These players might remain in focus as we speak at least from a PSU perspective. From the private perspective obviously players like a
Tata Power
,
Adani Power
should remain in focus. But again, power EPC players might also remain in focus to a large extent," says
Mayuresh Joshi
, Head Equity, Marketsmith India.
Let me actually talk about the power space only with you. Given the fact that you now have the government actually writing to states and also asking the states to make sure that you have the adequate power supply and given the fact that we are going to hit the peak of the summer season which means that the demand for power will only increase given the fact that you will see rise in temperature. How are you actually gauging the entire power space at this point in time?
Mayuresh Joshi:
So, three aspects, you have got power generators, you have got power transmitters, and then you have got the power EPC players as well. Now, when it comes to the generators, the expectation is that with summer coming around, the expectations in terms of peak power demand and peak power loads is going to be significantly higher over the next few weeks and the next couple of months.

And therefore, stocks like an
NTPC
, for example,
Power Grid
as an example also is a transmitter with grid transmission lines and capex to capitalisation remaining extremely stable for both these companies, having decent dividend yields along with Coal India, the expectation largely is that with peak power demand expected to surpass record levels this time around, expectations of thermal coal coming back very-very strongly at this juncture, actually mean that the blended realisations for
Coal India
might be relatively better and also let us not forget the dividend yield is significantly higher compared to a lot of players.
So, these players might remain in focus as we speak at least from a PSU perspective. From the private perspective obviously players like a
Tata Power
,
Adani Power
should remain in focus. But again, power EPC players might also remain in focus to a large extent.
So, let us not forget that over the next few years as India is expected to transition quite significantly specifically in the renewable space, the FGD space as well where critical thermal polluting plants might need equipment to probably ensure that they are running with more desulfurization and therefore the EPC players including the likes of
BHEL
. As a space it looks attractive with government initiatives, government capex. The entire renewable theme is expected to get pushed over the next few years, this is one mega theme that investors can probably look at.

What is the pecking order like now given that all the big four are out with their numbers within banks that is,
ICICI Bank
, HDFC, and the disappointment that we saw from SBI as well as Kotak.
Mayuresh Joshi:
So, the bias still remains with ICICI Bank/Axis Bank because as a disclaimer we continue holding these stocks in both our domestic as well as global portfolios. Results were in line with estimates.
The commentary was again in line with estimates and again a large part of the expectations from analysts is that over the next few quarters as we head into an interest rate cut cycle, the nims and spread should benefit quite significantly.
Consciously even if you read through
HDFC Bank
's commentary, the underwriting on advances growth has been consciously lowered to a large extent because they want to focus specifically in terms of both the cost to income as well as their asset quality on the balance sheet which has improved quite significantly over the last few quarters.
The risk weighted assets as a percentage of their balance sheet. All these three banks probably carry are significant in terms of providing growth and impetus to the balance sheet compared to the rest of the bank.
So, these three remain probably on top of our radar. Now, State Bank in my own personal opinion it was not a disappointing set.
Earnestly if you probably look at how the advances growth has been, the cost to income ratio has been settled around 35 bps odd, the expectation is that asset quality pressures which have come off quite significantly with GNPA is at 1.82, net NPAs at 0.67 odd, they should come quite significantly or remain in an enhanced mode in terms of efficiency coming down as every passing quarter comes through and therefore from the public sector banks State Bank. So, the top large leadership banks is something that we continue to remain and keep our focus on.

Tata Power-DDL, Nissin Electric commission micro substation under Japan's NEDO project
New Delhi: Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited ( Tata Power-DDL ), which serves approximately 9 million consumers in North Delhi, has commissioned a micro substation project in collaboration with Japan-based Nissin Electric Co. Ltd., under a demonstration programme supported by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The initiative is part of the International Demonstration Project on Japan's Energy Efficiency Technologies. A Project Agreement between Tata Power-DDL and Nissin Electric was signed on August 21, 2024. Prior to that, NEDO signed a Letter of Intent with Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC), a non-banking financial institution under the Ministry of Power, on January 10, 2024. The micro substation is aimed at supplying power to areas where transmission infrastructure exists but the grid is either underdeveloped or absent. The technology uses Pole-mounted Voltage Transformer (PVT) to directly convert high-voltage power from transmission lines to low-voltage power, without the need for a conventional large-scale substation. According to Tata Power-DDL, the micro substation project is designed to meet the requirements of regions with challenging terrains or space constraints. The equipment allows for stable and cost-effective electricity supply to load centres in rural as well as urban areas where grid extension is not viable. Tata Power-DDL stated that the technology enables efficient peak load management during the summer season and reduces the need for diesel-based mini grids in remote areas, thereby offering a lower environmental burden. The system also reduces operational costs, as it does not require generator refuelling or frequent maintenance. The micro substation was officially handed over to Tata Power-DDL and will be monitored for performance metrics such as power reliability, quality, and operational effectiveness. Discussions have begun with power distribution companies in Odisha for further deployment. Site visits and detailed action plans are being prepared as part of the next phase of implementation. The companies aim to replicate the solution in other parts of India, particularly in locations where Tata Power has operational presence outside Delhi.

PSU defence stock joins ₹3-trn market cap club; zooms 65% from April low
Bharat Electronics share price today: Navratna defence public sector undertaking (PSU), Bharat Electronics (BEL), hit a new high of ₹416.95 per share, rising 2 per cent on the BSE in Monday's intraday trade, in an otherwise weak market, on a healthy business outlook. The company has a strong order book position, supporting revenue visibility in the coming years. In comparison, the BSE Sensex was down 0.85 per cent at 81,708 at 09:35 AM. BEL shares have bounced 65 per cent from their three-month low level of ₹252.25, which they touched on April 7, 2025. Thus far in calendar year 2025, the defence stock has outperformed the market by surging 41 per cent as against a 4 per cent rise in the benchmark index. Bharat Electronics joins ₹ 3 trillion market cap club With today's stock rally, BEL has joined the top league of firms having market capitalisation (market cap) of more than ₹3 trillion. BEL has, now, become the second PSU defence company, after Hindustan Aeronautics, that has a market cap of ₹3.36 trillion, BSE data shows. Currently, BEL's market cap stood at ₹3.03 trillion at the time of writing this report and was at 25th position in the overall market cap ranking of the BSE listed companies. Inclusion in BSE Sensex BEL and Tata Group-owned Trent were included in the 30-stock BSE Sensex index with effect from today, replacing IndusInd Bank and Nestle India, as per the latest rebalancing announced by Asia Index Pvt Ltd, a BSE Ltd subsidiary. BEL is likely to see similar inflows, with about $275 million projected, or 3.1 times its average daily volume (ADV). Secures orders worth of ₹3,445 crore in June 2025 Thus far in the month of June 2025, BEL has secured three orders worth of ₹3,445 crore. On Friday, June 20, 2025, BEL announced that the company has secured additional orders worth ₹585 crore. Major orders received include fire control and sighting system for missiles, communication equipment, jammers, spares, services etc. On June 5, BEL said that the company has received orders from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata totally valued at ₹2,323 crore (excluding taxes) for supply of base and depot spares for the missile systems on Indian Naval ships. The spares will ensure operational continuity of onboard mission critical equipment. On June 4, BEL said it has secured additional orders worth ₹537 crore since the last disclosure on 16 May 2025. Major orders received include communication equipment, advanced composite communication system for ship, jammers, software, simulator upgrades, spares, test rigs, services etc. Meanwhile, on June 6, 2025, BEL announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics towards the development of indigenous electronics and semiconductor solutions in line with the Government of India's vision for self-reliance. This MoU marks a significant step forward for BEL and Tata Electronics in jointly exploring end-to-end solutions to meet domestic requirements. Takeaways from FY25 results/FY26 guidance BEL expects FY26 new orders at ₹ 55,000 crore (₹27,000 crore ex-QRSAM) and minimum revenue growth of 15 per cent with a 27 per cent earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) margin (vs 23-25 per cent FY25 guidance). Capex/R&D was guided at ₹1,000/1,600 crore with 90 per cent of revenue from defence. Revenue growth guidance is a minimum 15-17 per cent and 20 per cent long-term which, in analysts view, reflects improving visibility (exports/higher domestic demand) based on the proven competitive edge post recent developments (combat deployment). Potential orders for BEL include the QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile), next-generation corvettes, and spares for the LRSAM (Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile), Atulya and Shakti electronic warfare systems. The long-term pipeline includes the Akash, Project Kusha air defense system and SDR (software defined radios), largely led by requirements from the army. With a healthy order backlog, robust pipeline and improving execution led by increasing indigenisation, analysts believe that BEL provides strong earnings visibility. They expect revenue & profit after tax (PAT) compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) at ~17 per cent & ~18 per cent respectively over FY25-27E. About Bharat Electronics (BEL)
