Royal Highland Show to welcome over 200,000 visitors to annual agricultural event

Scotland's largest outdoor agricultural event is set to open its gates to over 200,000 people in Edinburgh.
Taking place in Ingliston, The Royal Highland Show will run over four days from Thursday until Sunday and will see the best of Scotland's rural sector, from farming to forestry to food and drink producers.
Visitors will experience family entertainment as hundreds of businesses fill the grounds, selling everything from agricultural machinery, clothing and motor vehicles to Scottish food and drink products.
We take a look at what to expect from this year's event.
The event, which has been running for over 200 years, will welcome over 4,000 livestock, hundreds of trade exhibitors including those from Scotland's food and drink sector, and a huge variety of entertainment and music.
Sheepshearing, pole-climbing, axe throwing, mini Land Rovers, pizza building, cheese tasting and sushi rolling are among the visitor attractions for this year.
There are various livestock breeds from miniature Shetland ponies to donkeys, goats to Highland cows being shown in the arena on every day of the show.
Scottish brewer Innis & Gunn will host a Sunday entertainment showcase from 11am at the Members' Village, while Elephant Sessions will perform at the Royal Highland Hoolie, joining The Whistlin' Donkeys, Manran, Trail West, Nati Dreddd and the Dangleberries. The event is a chance for Scotland's most prominent brands to promote their goods and services on the world stage and to encourage further growth and investment.
This includes exhibits from a number of UK Government-funded projects, including The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Destination Tweed.
Scottish secretary Ian Murray will host a reception with the Scotch Whisky Association to promote the national tipple.
He said: 'The Royal Highland Show is a fantastic opportunity to bang the drum for our iconic produce and help turbo-charge sales of Scottish goods and services at home and abroad.'
First Minister John Swinney is set to attend the Edinburgh event, and he has reaffirmed his government's commitment to sustainable food production amid 'significant change' in the farming sector, ahead of the visit.
Swinney said: 'Our ambition is for Scotland to be a global leader in sustainable and regenerative agriculture. To do that we are working in partnership with the sector to transform the support we give to our farmers and crofters.
'The Royal Highland Show is our chance to showcase the absolute best of food produce, farming excellence and all of the industries that support our rural communities.' STV News John Swinney will be in attendance at the show.
Meanwhile rural affairs secretary Mairi Gougeon used the first day of the event to announce a £14m scheme to provide grants to farmers will open next month.
The programme – opening for applicants on July 14 – will provide capital funding for those new to agriculture, as well as young farmers, those with small operations and tenant farmers.
The Future Farming Investment Scheme will provide cash for green projects and those which will increase efficiency, with up to £20,000 available – potentially as a 100% grant.
The announcement comes as Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton called for more support for the sector.
'There is so much uncertainty facing Scottish agriculture amid the family farm tax, trade barriers, falling income and the squeeze placed on farmers by multinational supermarkets,' he said after visiting the Royal Highland Show on Thursday.
He added: 'Throughout the Royal Highland Show, Liberal Democrats will be listening to farmers and producers, understanding the challenges they face and working out the best way forward.
'Our farmers are the best in the world. It's time both our governments recognised their invaluable contributions and backed a thriving future for Scottish agriculture.'

Edinburgh drivers were warned of significant road delays on Thursday as the Royal Highland Show got under way.
Traffic Scotland and Lothian have issued updates to road and public transport users with considerable tailbacks reported on the A8, M9, M8 and M90 with visitors entering the showground at Ingliston.
Lothian services including the 17, 18, 70 and 71 are all experiencing delays on the A8, the main route to the Royal Highland Centre. A service alert reads: 'Due to the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston buses are being delayed on the A8 Glasgow Road.'
A similar alert has also been issued for buses serving the A89 Edinburgh Road including X18 and X19.
Meanwhile Traffic Scotland warned: 'Royal Highland Show – Congestion Update. Significant delays of approx. 18 minutes from the #M90 Queensferry Crossing and from the #M8 from Livingston.'

More than 150 animals took part in the parade across the event's Main Ring. The Grand Parade takes place once again on the Sunday of the Show at 2.30pm. Awards were handed out to 15 winners who are leading the way in agricultural innovation. Winners included Graintek UK for their baby portable grain dryer, the smallest mobile dryer in the world and New Holland for their T6 methane power tractor, which offers a more sustainable way of working. David Tennant, Head of Show, said: 'There has been an incredible atmosphere on site today and the Saturday of the Show is always a really special one with The Grand Parade taking place – it's such a spectacle for visitors to experience. It's also been a delight to see lots more families at the Show today enjoying Tractor Ted, Mini Rovers and our Countryside Arena. 'The Sunday of the Show will see our Members Village being opened to the public to showcase a whole host of entertainment, from Edinburgh Military Tattoo artists, magician, Elliott Bibby and live music – it looks set to be a superb Sunday!' King Charles knew Queen had died after hearing two devastating words

It was a bittersweet moment for Charles as he stepped into the role he'd been waiting for his whole life for. The Royal Family has been through a few twists and turns but it was the end of a long stable chapter for the UK when Queen Elizabeth died in 2022. The monarch served an incredible 70 years on the throne, making her Britain's longest-reigning, and she was one of the most popular public figures across the globe. With the end of an era marked by the Queen's death, it also heralded a new beginning as King Charles stepped into the role he'd been waiting to do his whole life. At the age of 73, Charles became King, a bittersweet move as he was forced to navigate his new position whilst also grieving for his mum, as writes the Mirror. ‌ The Queen was at Balmoral and had been at the Scottish estate for the weeks leading up to her death at the age of 96. On the morning she passed, September 8, 2022, the then Prince Charles was called and told that it would not be long before his mother died. He was joined by his sister Anne, and the pair spent the final few hour's of the monarch's life taking turns to sit beside her, it's revealed in a new documentary. ‌ Channel 5's Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, sees experts discuss the moment Charles became the new King as they delve into the fact that he was 'summoned to Balmoral" from his own home on the Aberdeenshire estate, Birkhall, which is described as one of his favourite residences. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said in the documentary: 'He was told that it would probably be a few hours before she passed away." Royal expert and journalist Emily Andrews added: "Charles and Anne had been taking it in turns to sit with the Queen and then, I think, as she slipped into a coma, Charles needed a bit of fresh air and some nature. "So he went to the grounds of Birkhall, and it was there that he took the call." ‌ Viewers will discover that ahead of Charles being given the official news of the Queen's death, he already knew thanks to two words that were said to him upon answering the call. Jennie said: "He knew what had happened. "Because he was addressed by the person who rang him, the courtier, as 'Your Majesty' and then he knew, 'Well, my mother has died' and obviously he raced back to Balmoral to be at her side." ‌ It's also claimed in the documentary that members of the family felt relief after their huge loss because the Queen had been able to spend her last days at her beloved Balmoral, where she'd spent some of her happiest times. Emily Andrews added: "I think everybody in the Royal Family, actually, was really glad it happened in Scotland and for Charles as well to be at Birkhall, where it's such a kind of safe space for him, he feels very calm and relaxed, I think was very important'. ‌ After the news circulated within the wider family, Prince William, Edward and Andrew soon travelled to Balmoral, followed a short time later by Prince Harry. But he hit form last season during a loan in the Eredivisie, bagging 17 goals in 37 games for PEC Zwolle so has now won a permanent move back to Holland. Boss David Gray said: 'I'd like to start by wishing Dylan all the best for the future. 'He was a player that I enjoyed working with on the training pitch and someone that had a real desire to do well. 'He performed well in the Eredivisie with PEC Zwolle last season and felt more comfortable back in his homeland, playing football with a smile on his face. 'His time at Hibs didn't quite work out the way we'd all planned, but I'd like to thank him for all his hard work and hope he goes on to achieve his ambitions and full potential.' Hibs held out for a tidy sum for Vente, with several clubs interested in securing him after his form back home. Director of Football Malky Mackay said: 'There was a lot of interest in Dylan this summer after his performances last season, and he had a clear desire to continue playing and enjoying his football in the Eredivisie. 'We had to make sure that we got the right deal for Hibernian FC, and after a number of conversations, we're happy with the deal we've got for him. 'We wish him nothing but the best going forward.' Hibs chief Malky Mackay on his Celtic team-mate who could've been as good as Henrik Larsson Vente featured regularly during his first year at Easter Road but rarely played a full 90. He scored against Luzern in European competition and netted a further seven in all competitions in 2023-24. He flew out the gates last season with a hattrick in the first League Cup Group Stage match against Elgin City, but those were the last goals he would score for Hibernian. For the commencement of the league he was handed his homeland loan move, where he shone and ultimately laid the foundations for his permanent move away.
