KUWAIT CITY, May 26: The British Embassy organized a reception for green energy stakeholders on Sunday evening. In a press statement, the embassy revealed that the reception showcased leading UK sustainable energy systems company Green Power Technologies (GPT)'s 'Power Box' -- a durable off-grid power unit designed to deliver clean energy in remote and challenging environments. It also marked the launching of Kuwait British Renewables (KBR) -- a joint venture between GPT and local power company General Control Group to design and manufacture smart metering systems and electric vehicle charging stations in the country.
The reception was held under the patronage of Chairman of the Commercial Bank of Kuwait Sheikh Ahmad Duaij Al-Sabah and British Ambassador to the State of Kuwait, Belinda Lewis. The event highlighted the strength of the 250-year-long trading partnership between the UK and Kuwait, as well as the two countries' shared commitment to expand collaboration in the fight against climate change. Addressing the guests, Lewis stated: 'The United Kingdom and Kuwait have long enjoyed a close relationship based on shared values and strategic cooperation. Events such as this reaffirm the growing depth of our partnership; particularly as both nations seek to meet climate goals, embrace clean technology, and build knowledge-based economies. Forty-nine percent of the UK's electricity comes from renewable sources and we are actively supporting our partners, including Kuwait, to achieve their own energy transition goals.'
Country Director for Trade at the embassy Naz Demir added: 'As we celebrate 250 years of UK-Kuwait trading relations, this launch is a powerful example of how our historic partnership continues to evolve and deliver real impact. Kuwait British Renewables reflects a shared vision for sustainable growth and energy innovation. The UK remains committed to supporting Kuwait's Vision 2035 through strategic investment and world-class expertise in clean technology.'
Green Power Technologies (UK) Director Christopher Maltby commented: 'We are proud to bring British innovation to Kuwait with the launch of the Power Box -- a practical, scalable solution for clean, off-grid energy. This marks the beginning of a long-term commitment to support Kuwait's energy transition with smart, sustainable technology tailored to local needs.' Director of Kuwait British Renewables Richard Clements stated: 'Our goal is to localize world-class energy technology by producing smart meters and EV infrastructure right here in Kuwait. Alongside our sister company -- GPT, KBR will also source worldleading solar and battery storage solutions for installations in both homes and businesses. We are excited to be part of this national journey towards a digital, low-carbon energy future -- built in Kuwait, for Kuwait.'

London, Berlin march for Palestine

Tens of thousands join pro-Palestinian rallies • Activists break into UK's largest airbase LONDON: Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters marched in London and Berlin on Saturday calling for an end to the war in Gaza, amid concerns that the Iran-Zionist conflict could spark wider regional devastation. Protesters in the British capital waved Palestinian flags, donned keffiyeh scarves and carried signs including 'Stop arming Israel' and 'No war on Iran' as they marched in the sweltering heat. 'It's important to remember that people are suffering in Gaza. I fear all the focus will be on Iran now,' said 34-year-old Harry Baker, attending his third pro-Palestinian protest. 'I don't have great love for the Iranian regime, but we are now in a dangerous situation,' he added. There have been monthly protests in the British capital since the start of the 20-month-long war between the Zionist entity and Hamas, which has ravaged Gaza. Saturday's march comes amid heightened global tensions as the United States mulls joining the Zionist entity's strikes against Iran. Cries of 'Palestine will be free' rang out as protesters carried signs saying 'Hands off Gaza' or 'Stop starving Gaza'. Gaza is suffering from famine-like conditions according to UN agencies in the region following a Zionist aid blockade. (Right) People attend a demonstration in front of the Reichstag on June 21, 2025 in Berlin to express solidarity with the population of the Gaza Strip. - AFP photos Gaza's civil defense agency has reported that hundreds have been killed by Zionist forces while trying to reach the US- and Zionist-backed aid distribution sites. 'People need to keep their eyes on Gaza. That's where the genocide is happening,' said 60-year-old protester Nicky Marcus. 'I feel frustrated, angry because of what's happening in Gaza,' said 31-year-old data analyst Jose Diaz. 'It's in everyone's eyes. It's still on after so many months,' Diaz added. The overall death toll in Gaza since the war broke out has reached at least 55,637 people, according to the health ministry. A 31-year-old Iranian student who did not want to share her name, told AFP she had family in Iran and was 'scared'. 'I'm worried about my country. I know the regime is not good but it's still my country. I'm scared,' she said. In Berlin, more than 10,000 people gathered in the center of the city in support of Gaza, according to police figures. 'You can't sit on the sofa and be silent. Now is the time when we all need to speak up,' said protestor Gundula, who did not want to give her second name. 'Germany finances, Israel bombs' was among the chants from the crowd, which gathered mid-afternoon close to the German parliament. For Marwan Radwan, the point of the protest was to bring attention to the 'genocide currently taking place' and the 'dirty work' being done by the German government. Meanwhile, British media reported that the UK government was planning to ban a pro-Palestinian campaign group, which on Friday broke into the UK's largest air force base and vandalized two planes. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper was planning to begin the process on Monday to proscribe Palestine Action — effectively designating it a terrorist organization and making it illegal to join, according to UK media. Britain has announced sanctions against two Zionist cabinet ministers, suspended free-trade negotiations with the Zionist entity and summoned its ambassador over the conduct of the war in Gaza. It has also urged de-escalation in the Iran-Zionist war, while expressing concerns about Tehran's nuclear program. — AFP

Kuwait marks 64th Independence Day

State has made many accomplishments at many levels over the past six decades KUWAIT: Kuwait on Thursday celebrated its 64th independence anniversary, a joyous occasion that marked a new chapter in the northern Gulf state, which took its first steps in the journey of development. The late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah signed the Declaration of Independence with the British Chief Political Resident in the Arabian Gulf Sir George Middleton, ending the protectorate agreement and paving the way for a journey of development. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem said: 'On this day of our beloved nation ... On this day we move from one stage to another stage of history, and we fold a page from the past ... and open a new page through this agreement through which Kuwait earned its complete independence and full sovereignty.' Three years after the declaration, a decree was signed on May 18, 1964 merging the national day with the day in which Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem assumed office, making it February 25. Celebrations have been held on that day since 1965. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem took carefully measured steps for this day since assuming office in 1950, securing independence and paving the way for adopting a constitution. He signed a decree on August 26, 1961 to hold elections of the Constituent Assembly, mandated with writing the constitution. The 183-article constitution was completed in nine months, and it laid the foundations for a sturdy democratic regime, putting the Kuwaiti people on a path of progress and prosperity. On Sept 7, 1961, an Amiri decree was signed specifying the shape and colors of the Kuwaiti flag, the very first flag to be flown following independence. Kuwait has made many accomplishments at many levels over the past 64 years, meeting the aspirations of citizens, playing a major role in regional and international issues, and becoming a global humanitarian center. Kuwait became member of the Arab League on July 20, 1961. The UN Security Council began considering on Nov 30, 1961 Kuwait's application to join the United Nations, and on May 14, 1963, the application was approved and Kuwait became the UN's 111th member. The 15-year reign of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem, who was dubbed the 'Father of Independence' and 'Father of the Constitution', was peppered with achievements. At that time, Kuwait accomplished 43 laws and legislation, including the nationality law, monetary law, passports law and the organization of government departments. New departments were established to cope with the development of the nation, like public works, health, publication, knowledge, municipality, post and telephone, electricity and water, social affairs, awqaf and radio and television. Kuwait remains on a steady path of preventative diplomacy, crisis mediation and efforts contributing to solving outstanding regional and international issues. — KUNA

Kuwaitis evacuated from Iran begin arriving home

KUWAIT: The first group of Kuwaiti citizens evacuated from Iran arrived safely in Kuwait early Saturday morning, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues its full-scale emergency plan to secure the return of nationals stranded in the neighboring country. The flight, operated directly by Kuwait Airways, landed at Terminal 4 of Kuwait International Airport just after midnight, carrying 334 Kuwaiti men and women. The passengers had been transported overland to the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, where they boarded the evacuation flight. Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah received the returnees at the airport. The evacuation is part of Kuwait's proactive strategy to protect its people in light of the escalating conflict between Iran and the Zionist entity, who have traded missiles for nine days. No injuries have been reported among Kuwaiti nationals in Iran since the start of Zionist airstrikes last week, which have killed at least 430 people according to Iranian authorities. 'We thank the governments of Iran and Turkmenistan for facilitating the safe transfer of our citizens," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. Dozens of relieved family members waited atthe terminal, welcoming their loved ones with tears, prayers, and flower bouquets. Some children wore t-shirts with photos of family members and a message that read, 'Welcome home. Your return has brightened our lives.' Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya confirmed the arrival, noting that two more evacuation flights are scheduled — the second later Saturday and the third on Sunday. He stressed that all efforts are being made to complete the evacuation quickly and safely. Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Sameeh Hayat previously stated that more than 1,000 Kuwaitis are expected to be evacuated, many of them visiting Iran. 'Kuwait gives top priority to the safety of its citizens abroad, especially under current circumstances,' Al-Yahya said in a statement last week. 'We began identifying citizens in Tehran, then in Mashhad and Qom. We have contacted all Kuwaitis in these cities, recorded their numbers, and began evacuating them at the earliest opportunity and from the closest crossing points." — Agencies Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah receives evacuees at Kuwait International Airport (T4). — KUNA Children wearing t-shirts with photos of their loved ones and the message "Welcome home.
