Sindh takes the lead to empower women
The Sindh cabinet has approved several key projects, including the procurement of 1,000 pink electric motorcycles for women, double-decker buses and electric vehicles (EVs) for the metropolitan city, and the improvement of Keejhar Lake.
One of the key decisions was the approval of a programme aimed at enhancing female mobility through sustainable transportation. The Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) plans to introduce 1,000 pink electric motorcycles specifically for women at a cost of Rs300 million.
These bikes will be distributed through an open balloting process. Eligible applicants must be permanent residents of Sindh, either students or working women, and agree not to sell the two-wheelers for seven years. The cabinet believes this project would empower women by offering them greater mobility, independence, and economic opportunities.
The cabinet also greenlit the procurement of 50 public transport buses for the metropolis. This includes 15 double-decker buses to operate on Sharae Faisal and 35 electric buses for other routes in the city. The Rs3 billion project aims to provide a cleaner, more efficient public transport system for Karachiites.
The cabinet was informed that the provincial government is working with the Centre on the Greater Karachi Bulk Supply Scheme K-IV to increase water supply by 1,200 cusecs. This scheme, which has a budget of Rs39.94 billion, is crucial for ensuring sustainable water access for the city's growing population.

City's first beach resort opens
Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the Cove Beach Resort at Hawk's Bay on Friday, the first-ever beach resort in the metropolis established under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The mayor outlined several key projects aimed at improving Karachi's livability and economic vitality, which include cleaning of 46 major stormwater drains to prevent urban flooding during monsoon; beautification of II Chundrigar Road, the city's financial hub; preservation of historic landmarks such as Denso Hall, Empress Market, and Frere Hall; development of a mangrove conservation park to promote environmental awareness. The inauguration was attended by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, City Council Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, and various UC chairmen and officials. In a separate meeting with the Sindhi Muslim Housing Society's Managing Committee, Mayor Wahab directed the KMC Land Department to take immediate action against illegal constructions and encroachments on KMC-owned properties. He asked for weekly progress reports to ensure enforcement transparency. Meanwhile, the mayor has formally written to the Federal Minister for Commerce and Chairman of the Export Development Fund (EDF) Board, Jam Kamal Khan, expressing deep concern over the continued neglect of Karachi in the allocation and utilisation of Export Development Funds. The Mayor has urged the federal government to ensure that Karachi receives its rightful share of support and funding, commensurate with its critical role in Pakistan's economy.

Punjab unveils Rs50b shrimp farming expansion plan
The Punjab government has launched an expansive Rs50 billion plan to scale up shrimp farming across the province, aiming to transform the sector into a major contributor to the local economy and export earnings. Key components of the initiative include the development of a model fish market in Lahore and three state-of-the-art shrimp value chain estates in South Punjab's Muzaffargarh district. According to the Department of Fisheries, a 3,000-acre shrimp farming site will be established in Rakh Ali Wala, Muzaffargarh, with an initial investment of Rs10 billion. Additionally, value chain estates in Head Muhammad Wala, Rakh Ali Wala, and Shahgarh will be developed at a combined cost of Rs40 billion. The Punjab government has earmarked Rs3 billion in the upcoming fiscal budget to initiate these projects. Deputy Director of Fisheries Tayyab Rizwan stated that the value chain estates will be fully integrated, featuring hatcheries, feed mills, and shrimp processing plants. These facilities are expected to not only enhance shrimp production but also generate employment and stimulate seafood exports. In Lahore, the government plans to construct a modern model fish market at a projected cost of Rs10 billion. The facility will include cold storage, value addition units, and a streamlined supply chain network to improve market access for fish and shrimp farmers. An initial budget allocation of Rs848.6 million has been approved to commence construction.
