Ime Udoka gets Rockets contract extension after Knicks interest

New York Post2 days ago

Not only did the Rockets deny the Knicks' request to interview head coach Ime Udoka, they've now secured him for the foreseeable future.
He agreed to a long-term contract extension that makes him one of the NBA's highest-paid coaches, ESPN reported Thursday.
The Knicks asked for permission to speak with Udoka earlier this month for their head coaching vacancy after firing Tom Thibodeau.
Udoka just completed his second season with the Rockets, leading them to a 52-30 record as part of a dramatic turnaround for the franchise under his tutelage.
The Knicks have requested and been denied permission to interview a number of coaches who are currently under contract, including the Mavericks with Jason Kidd, the Timberwolves with Chris Finch, the Bulls with Billy Donovan and the Hawks with Quin Snyder.

Kidd is seeking a contract extension, and the Knicks' pursuit of him is not yet over, The Post's Stefan Bondy previously reported.
In terms of coaches that are actually available and not currently employed, the Knicks interviewed Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown this week, Bondy confirmed.
Jenkins was fired by the Grizzlies midseason, while the Kings parted ways with Brown midseason.
The Knicks axed Thibodeau earlier this month after five seasons, despite him leading the team to its first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years.

'Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans,' Knicks president Leon Rose said in a statement at the time. 'This pursuit led us to the difficult decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we've decided to move in another direction.'

Rockets' Initial Trade Offer For Kevin Durant Revealed

Rockets' Initial Trade Offer For Kevin Durant Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the NBA offseason heats up, the Phoenix Suns are actively exploring trade options for superstar Kevin Durant, and the Houston Rockets have emerged with an intriguing initial proposal. Advertisement According to an article published by Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints on Friday, the Rockets have offered guard Jalen Green and the 10th pick in this year's draft in exchange for the 15-time All-Star. However, negotiations have hit a snag, as the Suns are pushing for additional young talent, including Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason, and Reed Sheppard—players Houston is reluctant to part with. Durant, 36, remains a dominant force despite turning entering the waning years of his career, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists last season. His potential move has sparked widespread speculation, with the Rockets among the frontrunners alongside the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves. Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin DurantRick Scuteri-Imagn Images The Rockets' offer hinges on Green, a former No. 2 overall pick, and a valuable draft pick, but Phoenix's demand for more established young assets has created a standoff. Advertisement Sources indicate the Suns are seeking a package that includes two starting-caliber players and draft capital to rebuild after a disappointing 36-46 season. For Houston, retaining Smith, Eason, and Sheppard reflects confidence in their young core, which helped secure the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference last year. Meanwhile, the Suns' high asking price underscores their intent to maximize return on Durant's expiring $54.7 million contract. As the NBA Draft looms, this trade saga could reshape both franchises. Rockets Trade Package For Kevin Durant Gets Rejected: Suns Want A Premium Deal

Rockets Trade Package For Kevin Durant Gets Rejected: Suns Want A Premium Deal originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Kevin Durant trade saga is still ongoing, and the Suns appear no closer to a deal than they did when it started. While several teams have engaged the Suns on a potential trade, no offers have been enough to generate an agreement. Even the Rockets, who are reported to have a massive interest in Durant, are struggling to meet the high price for his acquisition. "Jalen Green and the 10th pick in this year's draft present a clear opportunity for the Rockets to swing a deal, but the Suns have demanded more, sources said. Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason, and Reed Sheppard are among the young talents in Houston that Phoenix has expressed interest in," wrote Brett Seigel. "The Rockets have not been willing to part with any of the three to this point." Durant listed the Rockets (along with the Spurs and Heat) as one of his preferred landing spots, essentially making it a three-team race for his services. With the Spurs being described as unlikely to trade for Durant, it puts the Rockets in a favorable position, but their decision to include Jalen Green in the deal, over Jabari Smith Jr. or Tari Eason, is causing some delay. "From the Suns' perspective, they don't view Green as a positive asset in these trade talks," wrote Seigel. "The young guard struggled in the Rockets' playoff run this season, and the Suns have discussed potential paths with other teams that could help facilitate a potential Durant trade by acquiring Green for other assets that would go to Phoenix. Not much progress has been made with this." After winning just 36 games this season, the Suns know that major changes are needed if they want to achieve any lasting playoff success. Right now, Durant is the best path to improvement, and they are planning to use his expiring contract to add depth and draft capital. From their perspective, Durant is still a top-tier superstar with averages of 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game on 52.7% shooting, and if they trade him for anything less than a haul, it would be doing a massive disservice to the franchise. With Durant, the Rockets would become favorites in the West and on par with elite contenders like the Thunder, Nuggets, and Timberwolves. Alongside Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green, or Jabari Smith Jr., Durant would thrive in the frontcourt and serve as a trusted mentor to the young roster. As much as they want Durant, they have to be careful not to overpay. With only a few other teams even in the running, the Rockets don't have a lot of competing offers right now, and they will hold off on giving up their favorite young players unless they have to. At this point, it's still too early to predict how it all plays out with Durant and the Rockets, but we know that it will take a lucrative package to satisfy the Suns' demands. If Houston isn't willing to pay, then some other team will, and it could have massive implications on the NBA story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Jun 20, 2025, where it first appeared.

Rockets' Young Star Emerges as Potential Key Piece in Kevin Durant Trade

Rockets' Young Star Emerges as Potential Key Piece in Kevin Durant Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The headline entering the NBA offseason continues to surround the potential trade destination for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. Advertisement Phoenix is expected to move on from Durant this summer after they put together another disappointing season that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2019-20 campaign. Due to this, it is clear that the Suns are going to try and rebuild their roster around Devin Booker as they try to acquire the largest trade package possible in return for Durant. Those teams are the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat as they have been named Durant's preferred landing spots according to ESPN's Shams Charania. While all three teams have reportedly been in contact with Phoenix, the Suns have yet to receive an offer that fits their asking price for Durant and a report that came out on Friday suggests that one of the Rockets key young players may have to be included. Advertisement According to Forbes' Evan Sidery, Cam Whitmore is a player to watch as an addition to a trade package between the Rockets and Suns for Durant. Sidery also mentioned that Houston has been unwilling to include Tari Eason and Jabari Smith Jr. in trade talks and because of this, Whitmore could end up being a key addition to help the Rockets land Durant. Of course, Whitmore has not seen a ton of playing time over his first two seasons in the NBA with Houston but that would likely change if he was included in a trade to the Suns. Cam Whitmore, Houston RocketsUSA Today Sports Whitmore would be a great addition to Phoenix's roster, especially with their lack of forward depth after a potential Durant trade. Advertisement Despite this, the Rockets have not signaled any intention of moving on from Whitmore this offseason but if they want Durant, they may have to include the 20-year-old forward in trade talks.
