TOKYO : Japan's Kazuyoshi 'King Kazu' Miura made his first appearance of his 40th season as a professional footballer at the weekend and shows no sign of wanting to hang up his boots any time soon.
The former international forward, who turned 58 in February, came on as a late substitute in Atletico Suzuka's 2-1 win over YSCC Yokohama in the fourth tier of the Japanese pyramid on Sunday.
The popular striker signed an 18-month loan deal with Suzuka last June but a leg injury sustained in January had kept him on the sidelines from the start of this Japan Football League season.
'I hope to play again showing my character,' Miura told Kyodo News agency after the match.
'I managed to play thanks to the support from everyone. I'm looking to stepping up a gear from here.'
Miura made his first two appearances for Santos in the 1986 Brazilian Championship, having headed alone to South America to pursue his football dream as a 15-year-old.
He returned to Japan as an established international to join Verdy Kawasaki and helped them win the first two J.League titles in 1993 and 1994. He scored 55 goals in 89 appearances for Japan, the last of which came in 2000.
Miura, whose long club career has also included spells in Italy, Croatia, Australia and Portugal, still has a way to go to match Egyptian Ezzeldin Bahader's record of turning out for a professional team at the age of 74.
Given his commitment to the game, however, it might be foolish to write him off.
'When I was around 35 or 40, I did start saying to myself, 'I can't keep playing this way,'' he told Fifa.com in April.
'Rather than giving any thought to quitting, it was more about pushing myself to give more. It's not so much that the word 'retire' isn't in my vocabulary, but more that I've never felt any desire to do it.'

Pakistan stun France to reach Nations Cup final

KUALA LUMPUR: Pakistan will face defending champions New Zealand in the final of the Nations Cup on Saturday. World No.15 Pakistan stunned world No.10 France 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 3-3 draw in regulation time in the semi-finals at the National Hockey Stadium. World No.11 New Zealand, meanwhile, edged South Korea 4-3 on penalties after their clash ended 2-2 in normal time. Pakistan's Rana Waheed Ashraf, named man of the match, said it was a proud moment for his country to reach a final after such a long time. "It feels like the revival of hockey. We're just one step away from qualifying for the FIH Pro League - that would be massive for Pakistan hockey," said Rana. France coach John-John Dohmen admitted his side let the game slip. "I think we started well and deserved to win. But in the second half, we forgot what we had to do. "Pakistan played really well in the second half and were better than us in the shootout." BJKC: Malaysia book semi-final date with Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia confirmed their spot in the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) Asia-Oceania Group II competition following a 3-0 win over Singapore at the National Tennis Centre on Friday. Elsa Wan Abdul Rahman earned Malaysia's opening point with a straightforward 6-0, 6-2 win over Sophie Chua. Joleen Saw then secured Malaysia an unassailable 2-0 lead with a hard-earned 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) win over Eva Marie Desvignes. Elsa then teamed up with Hannah Yip to whip Audey Tong-Erin Lee 6-2, 6-0 and seal Malaysia a 3-0 win. The start of the group A tie was delayed due to heavy rain in the morning. The win was enough for Malaysia to finish second in Group A and qualify for the semi-finals. Malaysia, seeded fourth, will face Indonesia for a spot in the final on Saturday. The other semi-final will feature Mongolia against the Philippines. The Philippines defeated Pacific Oceania 2-1 to finish second behind Indonesia in Group B.

Sri Pahang out, 13 teams in for 2025–26 M-League season

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Sri Pahang FC have confirmed that they will not participate in the Malaysia League (M-League) this season despite being granted a National License by the First Instance Body (FIB). The Malaysian Football League (MFL) announced in a statement that the 'Elephants' squad, which received the 2025/26 national license, has decided not to compete in the M-League by submitting a confirmation letter dated June 16. The decision will see 13 teams participating in the new season which will begin on August 8. 'All clubs have been granted the 2025-2026 National License by the independent First Instance Body (FIB) with the club from Brunei, DPMM FC, being granted approval from the International Football Association Board (FIFA) and the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) to compete in the 2025-2026 Malaysia League. 'However, Sri Pahang FC, which also received the 2025-2026 National License, have decided not to compete in the Malaysia League this season by submitting a confirmation letter dated 16 June 2025,' said MFL in a statement issued on its Facebook page today. According to MFL, the clubs competing in the championship this time are Johor Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT), Selangor FC, Penang FC, Kuching City FC, Sabah FC, Terengganu FC, Negeri Sembilan FC, Kelantan Darul Naim FC, Kuala Lumpur City FC, PDRM FC and DPMM FC and two clubs from AFL A1, namely Melaka FC and Imigresen FC. Commenting further, MFL announced that this season's Malaysian League calendar will begin with a clash between JDT, the Super League champion and Selangor, the Super League runners-up in the Charity Shield match on August 8, 2025, which is also the league's opening match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Johor. Meanwhile, the FA Cup tournament will begin in mid-August, the Malaysia Cup and MFL Challenge Cup in January 2026. MFL also announced that this season's Malaysian League calendar will run for 10 months, after last season's adjustment which lasted 14 months to align the schedule with international leagues. 'MFL will release the 2025-2026 Malaysian League schedule soon as MFL is facing constraints in completing the full schedule for the season since the AFC will only hold its draw for the ACL Elite and ACL 2 competitions involving JDT and Selangor FC on August 15. 'Meanwhile, MFL is still waiting for the detailed date of the Asean Club Championship from AFF which also involves the participation of JDT and Selangor FC,' according to the MFL. — Bernama
