International cybersecurity festival kicks off in Moscow

Russia Today22-05-2025

The international cybersecurity festival Positive Hack Days (PHDays Fest) opened in Moscow on Thursday, bringing together government officials, tech executives, and cybersecurity professionals for one of Russia's largest events focused on information security.
The three-day forum is being held at the Luzhniki Olympic Complex, with organizers expecting more than 250,000 attendees and guests to participate. Delegations from over 40 countries across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia are taking part.
Now in its third year as a large-scale public event, PHDays 2025 will focus on the growing role of technology in daily life. The program features more than 500 speakers, including top Russian officials and senior figures from domestic tech and infrastructure firms.
'This year, we've packed our program with exciting stuff for everyone, from budding enthusiasts to seasoned pros,' said Victoria Alekseeva, Chief Marketing Officer at Positive Technologies and General Producer of PHDays Fest.
'Attendees will get the inside scoop on the tech that surrounds us and explore exciting cybersecurity career paths,' she added.Technical sessions will cover open-source innovation, blockchain, and the role of artificial intelligence in combating cyber threats. The festival also features a public zone with interactive installations, where visitors can explore smart devices and learn how to use them securely. A closed-door business conference is being held in parallel for industry leaders and government officials.
Among the highlights is Standoff 15, an international cyberbattle where teams from 15 countries – including France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Serbia, Vietnam, Tunisia, Oman, and the UAE – will compete for a five million-ruble (over $63,000) prize. Participants will simulate real-time cyberattacks and defenses across key sectors such as energy, oil and gas, banking, aviation, logistics, and urban infrastructure.
Last year's PHDays Fest drew over 380,000 attendees and viewers worldwide, according to organizers.

Western use of interest from Russia's frozen assets is theft – top banker to RT

The use of the interest generated by Russian assets frozen in the West amounts to theft, Andrey Kostin, the CEO of major Russian lender VTB, told RT on Saturday on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Kostin condemned the actions of the West, the EU in particular, in regard to Russian assets as 'dangerous' games that could eventually be used by others against them. Western countries froze an estimated $300 billion worth of Russian sovereign funds following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. Some $213 billion of the assets are held by the Belgium-based settlement house Euroclear. 'It is a very dangerous thing to play such games. You start against one – tomorrow someone will use it against you,' Kostin warned. The use of proceeds from the assets, which have been repeatedly funneled for procurement of military aid for Ukraine, is grossly illegal and amounts to theft, Kostin noted. While various parties in the West have repeatedly mulled the possibility of seizing the assets themselves, they have failed to find a legal mechanism to do so because there is none, he added. 'This is theft. They are using interest now, but interest is the same money of the owner as the principal debt,' he stressed. Moscow has repeatedly condemned the freezing of its assets and has hinted at possible retaliatory measures against Western investments and property in Russia. Last October, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov warned that Moscow would retaliate in kind and start using the interest generated by the assets of 'unfriendly' countries and organizations held in Russia for its own needs. Kostin has long been skeptical about the prospects of Russia ever seeing its frozen assets again. Late last year, he suggested that the funds will never be returned under the pretext of Ukraine's purported 'reconstruction.' 'In the West, they say, let's pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine from the reserves. And they will draw up such a bill that even the reserves will not be enough,' Kostin said at the time.

BRICS launches ambitious development drive

BRICS countries have launched large‑scale joint projects in nuclear power, aviation, AI and other sectors, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said. The economic group is 'setting the bar in the development of so-called human-centric industries,' Putin noted, speaking on Friday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The group is mobilizing 'major projects to improve the living environment' and 'implementing large-scale initiatives in nuclear energy and aviation, in the field of new materials and the IT industry, in robotics and artificial intelligence,' the Russian president said. BRICS was initially established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2010. In 2024, the bloc extended full membership to Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and, later, Indonesia. Over 30 more nations have applied to join the group. The collective trade turnover of BRICS nations has 'already exceeded a trillion dollars and continues to grow,' Putin told a SPIEF plenary session. The Russian leader underlined the platform's core principles – consensus, parity, mutual interest, and openness – saying it will strengthen as more countries join. 'Russia invites partners to contribute to shaping a new global growth model, to jointly ensure the prosperity of our countries and the stable development of the entire world for many, many years to come,' he said. Today's global challenges require a global response, Putin stressed. 'Solving problems alone, especially at someone else's expense, is simply impossible – it is an illusion. Only joint actions within an organization such as BRICS and some other formats can ensure the movement of the entire civilization forward,' the president told the gathering. This year, SPIEF has drawn participants from 137 countries and territories, including global leaders, major corporations, international organizations, and policy experts.
