"A lot to prove to myself and the world": Michael Misa redefines what dominance looks like as 2025 NHL Draft's best forward prospect

Michael Misa, the dynamic Oakville, Ontario, forward, has become the most well-rounded offensive tool on the board going into the 2025 NHL Draft. Following a franchise-defying year with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League, in which he collected 134 points in only 65 games, Michael Misa is the top guy to take off the board as a forward.

draft prospect
Since the day Michael Misa received exceptional status to play in the OHL at only 15 years old, direct comparisons to legendary players Connor McDavid and John Tavares were made to him. That added pressure, though, hasn't slowed him down—it's just sped him up.
His entry into the OHL was record-breaking. Michael Misa tallied 56 points in 45 games as a rookie, surpassing the points-per-game mark he posted as an underage player last season behind John Tavares.
But it's his 2024-25 season that put him atop the scouting board. Posting 62 goals and 134 points—numbers no other draft-eligible OHL skater came within sight of—Michael Misa is being compared to the likes of Patrick Kane, whose draft season is the gold standard for junior offense.
Is Michael Misa an obvious pick for Sharks at No. 2 overall?
In contrast to most young stars, Misa's scoring outburst was not the product of flashy remodeling of his game. Rather, he doubled down on polish, developing shot control at the expense of raw power, returning to his natural center position, and enhancing his defensive effort.

2025 OHL Awards Ceremony: Michael Misa (Saginaw Spirit)
'Coming into this year, I think I had a lot to prove to myself and to the world,' Misa said at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo earlier in June. 'I really just tried to leave everything on the ice and walk out of here with no regrets.'

Whether through his deceptive shot release, dynamic skating mechanics, or capacity to dictate tempo, Misa's game is constructed for sustained NHL impact, and he's well on his way to being a top-line NHL center before too long. Whether or not the New York Islanders make him the No. 1 overall pick, Misa's NHL debut seems less of an if and more of a when.

Insider reveals Connor McDavid's next step could surprisingly be tied to Lauren Kyle's luxury ventures

Insider reveals Connor McDavid's next step could surprisingly be tied to Lauren Kyle's luxury ventures (Image via Getty) Connor McDavid's future with the Edmonton Oilers has been the center of many talks after the team's Stanley Cup loss. But now, a new reason is coming up, one that has nothing to do with hockey stats. It's personal, and it might be powerful enough to change everything. It's about his wife, Lauren Kyle, and her growing business life in Edmonton. Connor McDavid's future may depend on wife Lauren Kyle's growing ventures in Edmonton On June 20, 2025, NHL insider Chris Johnston shared a fresh update on The Chris Johnston Show about Connor McDavid's situation. According to Johnston, one big reason why Connor McDavid may stay with the Oilers is because of his wife Lauren Kyle's success as a businesswoman in Edmonton. 'She's an entrepreneur,' J ohnston said on the show. 'She just opened a bar in Edmonton and has a lot of different ventures.' He said that Connor McDavid is signed for an eleventh season, having lived in Edmonton for ten years. The idea here is that the couple has created a life together in the city. And now with Lauren Kyle supporting nearby companies, the roots appear to be deepening. However, Johnston also gave a small warning. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo 'They have to give him a reason to stay,' he said, pointing to how the team must continue building a winning roster to keep their star captain interested. McDavid's close bond with teammate Leon Draisaitl could also be a big factor. Draisaitl, who is also his best friend, has just started his new eight-year contract with the team. That long-term deal could be another reason for McDavid to remain. Connor McDavid may choose a short-term contract to keep pressure on the Oilers While many expect Connor McDavid to sign a long deal, Johnston suggested something different. He said a shorter contract like four or five years is more likely than the usual eight-year max. 'Not because he wants to leave, but because it keeps his options open.' The idea is that a shorter deal would remind the Oilers that they must stay competitive. With only one season left on Connor McDavid's current contract, the pressure is now on Edmonton to prove they can win soon or risk losing their captain and star player. Johnston's full remarks can be heard starting at the 3:18 mark of the June 20 episode. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here

NHL scouts expose serious concerns about Aaron Ekblad ahead of free agency

NHL scouts expose serious concerns about Aaron Ekblad ahead of free agency (Image Via Getty) Aaron Ekblad just helped the Florida Panthers win back-to-back Stanley Cups. He played big minutes and looked solid on defense. But now, with free agency coming up, some experts are raising questions. Will Aaron Ekblad's body hold up for another long contract? And how much is he really worth as he gets older? Aaron Ekblad's injuries and age raise concerns among NHL scouts On June 20, 2025, NHL insider Chris Johnston wrote in The Athletic that Aaron Ekblad is seen as a 'polarizing player' by many NHL scouts. Johnston said some teams love what Ekblad brings when healthy. However, some doubt his future, notably given his past of wounds and age. At 28 years old, Aaron Ekblad will be 29 next season. Since 2018–19, he hasn't played a whole NHL campaign. Last season, he missed time due to injury and was suspended for violating the NHL's performance-enhancing drug rules. He only played in 56 regular season games during the 2024–25 season. In 2023–24, he played just 51 games after shoulder surgery the previous summer. Aaron Ekblad came back in April 2025 during the first-round playoff series of the Panthers versus the Tampa Bay Lightning notwithstanding everything else. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Right away he demonstrated his worth by skating on the top pairing adjacent to Gustav Forsling. In 19 playoff games, he had four goals and nine assists while averaging nearly 24 minutes of ice time per game. Aaron Ekblad could take pay cut to stay or test free agency market Aaron Ekblad's most recent contract with Florida ran for eight years at $60 million, or $7. 5 million annually. Signed before the 2017–18 that his deal is ending, the Panthers are reportedly hoping he'll accept less money to stay. Also Read: Aaron Ekblad's High-Stakes Comeback Could Decide Panthers Fate Against Maple Leafs NHL Network's David Pagnotta reported that the Panthers want to re-sign Ekblad for around $6–7 million per season. That would allow the team additional room to hold other important players like Sam Bennett, who is also a free agent. Aaron Ekblad's intentions are unknown right now. He is still marking Florida's second consecutive Stanley Cup victory, which was on June 17, 2025. If he chooses to test free agency in July, other teams will have to decide if he's worth the risk. Aaron Ekblad's playoff success is clear but his injury history may make teams pause. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here

'Really disappointing': NHL faces backlash over record-low Stanley Cup Final viewership and controversial media strategy

The 2025 Stanley Cup Final between Florida and Edmonton saw shockingly low viewership in Canada (Image via Reuters) Despite high stakes and elite talent on the ice, the 2025 Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers failed to capture the audience it deserved. Game 6 averaged just 4.327 million viewers across English and French networks in Canada—a shocking drop that marks the lowest viewership for a Game 6 since 1994. Game 6 ratings hit a historic low as fans blame cable broadcasting, poor promotion, and market mismatch Braylon Breeze posted on X, 'The 2025 Stanley Cup Final averaged 4.366 million viewers across Canada — down 4% from the first six games of last year's series.' The steep drop in fan engagement has raised serious concerns about the NHL 's reach and media strategy. A major point of criticism lies in the league's broadcast partner. The NHL's high-profile media deal with Turner Sports put the 2025 Stanley Cup Final on TNT, a cable network with far less reach than traditional giants like ABC or NBC. While the deal brought in big money, it arguably cost the NHL millions of casual viewers. 'There's a difference in not being on an ESPN-branded platform,' said Ed Desser, a former NBA executive. 'For better or worse, ESPN is kind of special… it's just a different animal.' TNT also struggled with ratings in the 2023 Final, while network broadcasts consistently drew larger audiences in other years. Without ESPN or ABC branding, many fans, especially casual ones, didn't even realize where to tune in. Market mismatch and divided fan bases may have further hurt the numbers This year's matchup featured only one U.S. team—Florida—while Edmonton represented the Canadian side. While Canada showed up in early games with 4.5 to 4.8 million viewers, American viewership lagged behind. Florida, a small hockey market competing with the nearby Tampa Bay Lightning for fan loyalty, simply couldn't carry national attention on its own. John Kosner, a former ESPN executive, expressed disappointment, noting the exciting quality of the series. 'I find it really disappointing considering how remarkable the series was last year.' With streaming, digital content, and blockbuster TV as constant competition, Desser warned: 'You're not just competing with what's on TV—you're competing with the best content ever created.' Also Read: Brad Marchand's Stanley Cup win stirs emotion as wife reveals pain of being apart since shocking Bruins trade The NHL may be financially sound, but if it wants to keep growing, a modernized media and fan engagement strategy is no longer optional—it's urgent.
