Actor Rishab Shetty escapes unhurt as boat capsizes during Kantara-1 shoot

A boat carrying actor Rishab Shetty and around 30 crew members capsized during the shoot of 'Kantara: Chapter 1' at the Mani reservoir in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, reported news agency PTI. The incident occurred in the shallow waters of Melina Koppa in the Masti Katte region, narrowly averting what could have been a major tragedy.
All members onboard, including actor-director Shetty, escaped unhurt, the police said. However, filming equipment, including cameras, is believed to have been damaged or lost.
The exact value of the loss is still being assessed, according to Thirthahalli police, who confirmed an investigation is underway.
This incident comes just days after the death of actor-mimicry artist Kalabhavan Niju, 43, who suffered a heart attack in Bengaluru while shooting for the same film.
According to a report by OnManorama, Niju complained of chest pain at the homestay arranged for artists and was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead. The Kerala-based actor had reportedly joined the film after an audition and was last seen in the Malayalam film 'Marco'.
His death marks the third fatality linked to 'Kantara: Chapter 1' in the past month. In May, Kannada comedian Rakesh Poojary, 33, died of a cardiac arrest while attending a wedding. Around the same time, a 32-year-old junior artiste from Kerala, MF Kapil, drowned in the Souparnika river after being caught in a cross current.
The Hombale Films production has endured a series of misfortunes since filming began. Last November, a minibus carrying 20 junior artistes met with an accident in Mudoor; though all escaped unhurt, it raised alarms over on-set safety. Earlier, a costly set constructed for the film was destroyed by heavy rains, further delaying the shoot.
Kantara: Chapter 1 is a prequel to Shetty's critically acclaimed 2022 film Kantara. The new instalment is scheduled for release on 2 October 2025, with Rishab Shetty once again taking the lead role.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly denied it screening permission over the name of the title character. According to sources, the film was reportedly denied screening clearance, citing that Janaki, an alternative name of Goddess Sita, cannot be used for such a character. Pravin, in a Facebook post, confirmed on Saturday that the Censor Board has denied screening permission for the movie. He said in the post, without elaborating, that there would be no release on 27 June. Meanwhile, noted director B Unnikrishnan, the general secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), on Sunday told reporters that the makers of the JSK were clearly informed by the CBFC that the name Janaki cannot be used in the movie. "They have not received any written information in this regard. A show-cause notice is yet to be received. They expect to get it by Monday," he told reporters in Kochi. The CBFC clearly stated to the film's crew that the name Sita cannot be used either in the title or for the character in the movie, Unnikrishnan said. "The story is about the legal fight carried out by an assaulted woman against the state. It is said (by the Board) that Goddess Sita's name cannot be given to the woman character who suffered assault," he said. Another filmmaker faced similar issue He said another Malayalam filmmaker recently faced a similar issue over the name of a character called Janaki in his movie, and he was forced to change it to Jayanthi to get Censor Board certification. Terming the Board's action as "strange", the FEFKA secretary asked where the country is heading. He said filmmakers are even denied the freedom to give the characters in their films the names of their choice. The director also said that in this circumstance, it would be tough to choose a name for characters belonging to the Hindu religion, as the majority of them would be epithets of Gods or Goddesses. Union Minister Suresh Gopi and the makers of the film were immediately not available for a comment.

I was always very clear that we would work a certain amount only, and my mom (veteran actor Tanuja) also backed me up big time on it." Addressing the controversy around Deepika's exit, Malhotra added, 'If I need an actor and am confident I can finish the film within those working hours, I'd work with them even for six hours a day. This isn't actor-specific. People are just gaining publicity in the name of Deepika Padukone. She's asking for family time, what wrong is she demanding?" He also remarked that if Vanga required longer hours from his female lead, the director could always adjust the schedule accordingly or cast someone else.
