Pelicans' Williamson accused of rape in LA civil suit

LOS ANGELES: New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has been accused of rape in a civil lawsuit in Los Angeles, court filings showed on Friday. A filing made in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday by a woman identified as Jane Doe said the former No.1 NBA draft pick Williamson raped her at a Beverly Hills apartment on two occasions in 2020.
'These two incidents were not isolated,' the lawsuit states. 'Defendant continued to abuse, rape, assault, and batter Plaintiff in California and other states, including Louisiana and Texas, until the relationship ended in 2023.'
The accuser is seeking damages for assault, sexual battery, domestic violence, burglary, stalking and false imprisonment. Williamson's attorneys said in a statement emailed to AFP the allegations were 'categorically false and reckless,' adding that the NBA star's legal team would seek 'significant damages for this defamatory lawsuit.'
The lawsuit said the woman dated Williamson over five years from 2018 to 2023. 'During the course of their relationship, Defendant engaged in a continuing pattern of abusive, controlling, and threatening behavior toward Plaintiff,' the lawsuit states. 'His wrongful conduct occurred in Louisiana and continued thereafter across several states. The abuse was sexual, physical, emotional, and financial in nature.'
The lawsuit adds that Williamson carried out 'acts of criminal violence' against the woman which included choking, beating and pointing a loaded gun at her head. The suit alleges Williamson was 'either drunk or on cocaine' during the assaults. Williamson's attorneys have accused the woman of trying to extort money from the Pelicans ace. 'We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness and we unequivocally deny them,' a statement from legal firm Barrasso-Usdin-Kupperman-Freeman & Sarver said. 'This appears to be an attempt to exploit a professional athlete driven by a financial motive rather than any legitimate grievance.'
The statement said Williamson and the woman had not dated but engaged in a 'consensual, casual relationship' that began when he was 18. 'At no point during or immediately after that relationship did the plaintiff raise any concerns,' Williamson's attorneys said. 'Only after the friendship ended did she begin demanding millions of dollars. Mr. Williamson reported the plaintiff's extortion attempts to law enforcement. We are confident that the legal process will expose the truth and fully vindicate Mr. Williamson.' — AFP

Draper's careless double-fault gifted Lehecka a break in the opening game of the first set. The ice-cool Lehecka ignored the searing temperatures as he cruised through the rest of the set. Draper needed to apply pressure on Lehecka to get back in the match and he did exactly that in the fourth game of the second set. Even then, Lehecka staved off four break points and repelled another in the sixth. But Draper kept slugging away from the baseline and finally landed a big blow with a winner down the line on set point. Rock legend and avid tennis fan Jon Bon Jovi, watching in the stands, rose from his seat to salute Draper's gritty fightback. Draper had been living on a prayer for two sets and his luck ran out in the 11th game of the deciding set when Lehecka crushed a backhand winner to break. Lakers to be sold in record-breaking $10bn deal: ESPN
LOS ANGELES: The Los Angeles Lakers are being sold in a record-breaking $10 billion deal that makes the iconic franchise the highest-valued sports team in US history, ESPN reported Wednesday. The report said the Lakers owners, the Buss family, would sell their controlling interest in the team to billionaire Mark Walter, who already owns a minority stake in the franchise. While Jeanie Buss would continue as Lakers governor, the deal ends the Buss family's 46-year reign over the NBA giants. Walter is the chief executive of holding company TWG Global which has built an impressive portfolio of professional sports teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Sparks. He is also part of the ownership group of English Premier League side Chelsea. TWG also owns the Billie Jean King Cup tennis tournament and the Cadillac Formula One team. While further specifics of the deal were not disclosed, Lakers legend Earvin 'Magic' Johnson—a business partner of Walter—was among the first to react to news of the agreement. 'Laker fans should be ecstatic,' Johnson wrote on X. 'A few things I can tell you about Mark—he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way. And he will put in the resources needed to win! I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike.' 'The best choice' Johnson cited Walter's ownership of the Dodgers baseball team as a reason for optimism. The Dodgers have won the World Series twice since Walter's ownership group took over the club, and in recent years have adopted an aggressive recruitment strategy that has seen them sign some of the sport's best talent, including Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani on a 10-year, $700 million deal. Mark has been nothing short of a winner.' The Buss family selling the Lakers marks the end of an era in the NBA, whose modern popularity owes much to the franchise's 1980s heyday. The Lakers were bought in 1979 by charismatic tycoon Jerry Buss, who quickly helped turn the franchise into a sporting powerhouse as well as a globally recognized brand. The Buss era brought the Lakers 11 NBA championships—more than any other team over the same period—and encompassed golden ages which included the 'Showtime' Lakers of Magic Johnson as well as a hat-trick of championships between 2000 and 2002 when the team was spearheaded by Kobe Bryant. R Kelly lawyers allege he was target of ‘overdose' plot by prison guards

Kelly is currently serving a 30-year-prison sentence at a facility in North Carolina. He was found guilty of myriad crimes including federal racketeering and sex trafficking of minors. His lawyers alleged in a flurry of filings Monday and Tuesday that Kelly was in solitary confinement when prison staff instructed him to take an 'overdose quantity of medication' on June 12. The 58-year-old became 'faint' and 'dizzy' by the next morning, the filing alleges. 'Mr Kelly tried to get up, but fell to the ground. He crawled to the door of the cell and lost consciousness,' his attorneys said. The court papers say Kelly was taken in an ambulance to Duke University Hospital and that he was under treatment for two days. Queried by AFP, the Bureau of Prisons declined to comment. 'For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not discuss the conditions of confinement for any incarcerated individual, including medical and health-related issues. Additionally, the Bureau of Prisons does not comment on pending litigation or matters that are the subject of legal proceedings,' the office said in a statement. Kelly's lawyers had previously filed an emergency motion for release to home detention, saying that the once-famous artist was the target of a murder plot orchestrated by prison officials. In opposing the request, government attorneys called the accusations 'fanciful' and 'theatrical.' The request 'makes a mockery of the harm suffered by Kelly's victims,' the Chicago federal lawyers said, adding that it wasn't filed in the correct court with the jurisdiction to even entertain the accusations. Kelly was convicted in 2021 in New York federal court for using an enterprise to systematically recruit and traffic teenagers and women for sex. The singer known for hits including 'I Believe I Can Fly' was then convicted one year later in Chicago federal court in a separate trial, in which jurors found him guilty of producing child pornography and enticement of a minor. He is currently serving the New York prison sentence, and will serve almost all of the Chicago sentence concurrently.—AFP
