Railways to build 100 MEMUs and 50 Namo Bharat trains for short trips
To ease passenger woes in short-distance railway travel, the government will manufacture new 100 expanded mainline electric multiple units (MEMU) and 50 Namo Bharat trains, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said here on Tuesday.
'Yesterday, two major decisions were made. To ease passenger travel, 100 MEMUs will be manufactured with 16 and 20 coaches. Earlier, MEMUs were manufactured with 8 or 12 coaches. A new factory is being set up in Kazipet, Telangana where these trains will be made,' the minister said at the inauguration of India's largest automobile loading facility at Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant.
A MEMU is a type of electric multiple unit train designed for operation on mainline tracks, connecting city centres with suburban areas for short to medium-distance routes with frequent stops.
The minister also added that the ministry of railways will build 50 new Namo Bharat trains. These air-conditioned trains were developed for short-distance travel between cities. The first of these trains was launched last year in Gujarat.
The minister also said that the GatiShakti Cargo Terminal, dedicated for Maruti Suzuki's car transportation, will enable greening of logistics as these cars were earlier ferried via road transport.
'In line with the vision of the Prime Minister, railways undertook major reforms in 2021 to strengthen multi-modal logistics, resulting in the construction of 108 multi-modal cargo terminals in a short span of time. The terminal in Haryana, where the announcement was made, is spread over 45 acres and has a cargo handling capacity of up to 4.5 lakh cars,' he said.
The minister also said that a pilot project in the Bikaner division of North Western Railway to publish final charts with passenger allocation 24 hours before the train's departure has borne great results. He added that the facility will allow passengers to plan their journeys better.
Currently, charts are published some 2-3 hours before the train's departure time, leaving passengers anxious about their travel plans.
Maruti Suzuki transported 518,000 units in 2024-25 through the Automobile Freight Train Operator scheme. The railways, in FY25, crossed the mark of one million cars transported through its network. Now, 20 per cent of all cars manufactured in India are transported via rail.
At the same event, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said that the government's railway work in the state and the Manesar cargo terminal will ease connectivity to ports on the western coast, enabling better access to export networks.

'Because matter became public?': Priyank Kharge gets nod for US visit; says Centre took 'U-turn'
Priyank Kharge (File photo) NEW DELHI: Karnataka minister Priyanka Kharge on Saturday said the Union government has taken a "U-turn" and granted him permission for an official visit to the United States. Also Read: 'Centre curbing Karnataka's fame,' alleges Priyank Kharge; calls US trip denial by govt 'improper' Kharge also highlighted that the ministry of external affairs (MEA) revoked its earlier decision and gave him an NOC on Thursday, after his press conference that day on the issue. "So in a U-turn, the Ministry of External Affairs has now decided to revoke its earlier decision and grant me a clearance for an official visit to the United States," the Karnataka IT minister wrote on X. The Congress leader, who is the son of party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, stated that he had applied for the June 14-27 tour on May 15, and alleged that he was denied permission without any official explanation. The timing of the NOC, he added, raised "serious questions" - why was the clearance denied in the first place, was the earlier order revoked only because the matter was made public, why should he travel to the US when key events pertaining to his programmes are already over or nearing completion, and would the MEA now not explain its earlier denial because it has now granted permission for the visit. "While the Centre gives us slogans like 'Make in India,' 'Digital India', 'National Quantum Mission' and 'India AI Mission,' the real work to realise these aspirations is happening here in Karnataka. They coin the vision, but when we do the work to bring investments, create jobs and position India as a global leader - they block us," Kharge said. These questions, he added, warrant an "urgent response" as Karnataka "deserves answers."

'Mastered the art of slogans, not solutions': Rahul Gandhi targets PM Modi over economic woes, says ‘Make in India' failing youth
NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the success of the 'Make in India' initiative and accused him of focusing on catchy slogans rather than delivering real solutions to India's economic challenges. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a post on X, Gandhi said, "'Make in India' promised a factory boom. So why is manufacturing at record lows, youth unemployment at record highs, and why have imports from China more than doubled? Modi ji has mastered the art of slogans, not solutions. Since 2014, manufacturing has fallen to 14% of our economy." He highlighted that manufacturing has dropped to just 14% of the country's economy since 2014, the year the initiative was launched. He also pointed to a sharp rise in imports from China, accusing the Union government of ignoring local industry in favour of catchy slogans. Gandhi, LoP in Lok Sabha, also shared a video of his interaction with two young men, Shivam and Saif, in Nehru Place, New Delhi. He said the duo are skilled and full of potential but lack the opportunities to succeed in today's economic environment. 'The truth is stark: we assemble, we import, but we don't build. China profits." he said, criticising India's dependence on imported goods and lack of robust manufacturing. He further alleged that the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, once heavily promoted by the government, is now being quietly rolled back. "With no new ideas, Modi ji has surrendered. Even the much-hyped PLI scheme is now being quietly rolled back. India needs a fundamental shift - one that empowers lakhs of producers through honest reforms and financial support,' Gandhi warned. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'We must stop being a market for others. If we don't build here, we'll keep buying from those who do. The clock is ticking, ' he added. The Make in India initiative was launched by PM Modi in 2014 as part of a broader effort to drive nation-building and boost the manufacturing sector.
