Rep distributes RM147,000 in MRP grants to Bawang Assan NGOs

SIBU (June 7): Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has distributed RM147,000 in Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants to 14 recipients, comprising non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and associations within the Bawang Assan state constituency.
This marks the first group of recipients to receive allocations for the year through the Bawang Assan Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Service Centre.
'We have over 100 recipients in total, with an overall allocation of RM2 million. The remaining grants will be distributed next week,' said Wong.
He noted that the allocation is part of his ongoing effort to support community-based initiatives and welfare programmes, and that recipients who did not receive funds in this round may reapply in subsequent phases.
Wong, who also serves as PDP senior vice president, stated that he receives an annual allocation of RM8 million from the Sarawak government for development and welfare initiatives in his constituency.
This includes RM2 million under the Minor Rural Project (MRP), RM5 million for the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), and RM1 million for the Sarawak Poor Housing Improvement Programme (PPRMS).
He added that Bawang Assan is home to approximately 30,000 voters, with a demographic breakdown of 54 per cent Chinese and 46 per cent Bumiputera, of which around 45 per cent are Iban.
'We will do our best to be fair. Every year, we ensure these allocations reach those in need,' he emphasised.

Meanwhile, independent youth group Mandiri has criticised the police for allegedly failing to facilitate the anti-corruption rally on June 21. Mandiri coordinator Wong KuKui said the group was made to understand that police officers present during the peaceful assembly did not fulfil their responsibilities, despite having received prior notice of the event. 'This is not a minor oversight — it is a dereliction of duty that could endanger lives. In the event of injury or casualty, the police must bear full responsibility,' he said. Wong also claimed that Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) had ordered the removal of banners, even though the rally was held in a public space. 'This reflects DBKK's ignorance or refusal to acknowledge legal developments, especially the moratorium on Section 11 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (APA 2012), which was announced by Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on February 13, 2025,' he said. The moratorium suspends the requirement to obtain permission from venue owners to hold assemblies, which Wong described as a progressive move to safeguard the public's right to peaceful assembly. 'Unfortunately, enforcement agencies continue to defy this legal shift,' he added. Wong further revealed that Mandiri had received reports of a student's vehicle being doused with a liquid suspected to be chemical near the rally site. Mandiri is calling for an immediate investigation into the alleged provocations and sabotage targeting rally participants. The group also urged authorities to guarantee the safety and democratic rights of participants at future public gatherings. Wong affirmed that Mandiri stands in full solidarity with all rally participants who spoke out against corruption, demanded accountability, and advocated for a fairer future.

Selangor govt will not compromise on 3R issues
SABAK BERNAM: The Selangor government will not compromise on issues relating to race, religion and royalty (3R), as such matters could undermine the state's harmony and unity. Selangor Rural Development, Unity and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail said issues involving racial and religious sensitivities must be handled firmly and wisely, given the state's role as a key national hub with a multiracial and densely populated society. 'Selangor must surely serve as an example, not only within the country but also to the world. Despite our ethnic diversity, we have managed to build a nation founded on strong unity. 'That is why we constantly work with the Ministry of National Unity through various awareness and unity programmes,' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Santuni MADANI and Misi Jelajah Peduli Ummah: Sejahtera Insan Al-Falah programmes at the As-Syukriah Mosque, Parit 8 Gambut, Sungai Panjang, here today. He said this in response to a news report yesterday, which cited data from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stating that 40,515 pieces of potentially fake news content had been identified and reported by platform providers from 2023 until May this year. Of the total number, 11,819 were related to 3R content, of which 7,571 had been deleted. Rizam said one of the initiatives being actively implemented was strengthening the role of the Rukun Tetangga Areas, particularly in rural areas, to foster patriotism and racial unity. Meanwhile, he said no official complaints concerning 3R issues had been received so far, except for minor community-related matters that could be resolved locally. Earlier, Rizam said the programme organised by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI), in collaboration with the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisation (MAPIM), was seen as effective in bridging the gap between the people and government agencies, particularly in delivering services directly to the target group. He said the programme, which began yesterday (June 21), featured a range of beneficial activities tailored to different age groups, including health screenings, dakwah sessions, sports, e-sports competitions and exhibitions by government agencies. Meanwhile, JAWI director Hanifuddin Roslan, who was present at the programme, said the department had presented cash contributions of RM220 each to 253 asnaf (eligible tithe recipients) identified through the Selangor Zakat Board. In addition, he said the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ) of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) had presented mock cheques amounting to RM10,000 to the As-Syukriah Mosque, RM5,000 to five suraus under its supervision, and RM5,000 to the Desa Permai Parit 8 Quran and Fardhu Ain Integration Class. Hanifuddin said the programme was also JAWI's second corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative held this year outside its administrative area, with more locations to be included in the future.
