Eritrea: Schools Independence Day Week commences in Central Region
Schools Independence Week in connection with the 34th Independence Day anniversary has officially commenced today at Deb'at hall in Akria sub-zone under the theme 'Our Cohesion-Our Armour'. The Schools Week has been officially opened by Mr. Fesehaye Haile, Governor of the Central Region.
Mr. Belai Habtegabir, head of the education office in the region, said that the commencement of Schools Independence Week beyond providing academic education has significant contribution in nurturing competent students, inculcating nationalism and preserving the noble societal values.
The event was attended by Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, Mr. Abraham Semere, chairman of the regional Assembly as well as other officials in the region.
Schools Independence Day Week in the Central Region will be conducted in 116 kindergartens, 79 elementary, 40 junior as well as in 22 high schools featuring various programs.

Eritrea: Programs in Connection with Martyrs' Day
Various programs in connection with Martyrs' Day, 20 June, have been conducted in Asmara from 16 to 18 June. The National Confederation of Eritrean Workers conducted a popular campaign at Asmara Martyrs Cemetery, along with cultural programs and support initiatives for martyrs' families. The campaign at the Martyra Cemetery was attended by 160 workers from the central office and affiliated workers' confederations. At the cultural program organized at the confederation's central office, Mr. Tesfay Girmay, Head of Administration and Finance, stated that over 80 members of the central office have been supporting eight families of martyrs since 2024. In related news, the cooperative association of members of the 52nd Division organized a program in connection with Martyrs' Day at the Meshalit historical site on 17 June. The event was attended by members of the association and youth workers' organizations. At the event, veteran fighters provided briefings on the heroic feats demonstrated by the then 52nd Division of the EPLF in its 1988 battle against enemy forces at the Meshalit Front. Meshalit Front is located 30 km north of Keren. The cooperative association of the 70-16 Division also conducted a popular campaign at the Barentu Martyrs Cemetery, which included tree planting and environmental sanitation activities. Eritrea: Prayer Service in Connection with Martyrs' Day
Prayer services and sermons in commemoration of Martyrs' Day were held at St. Michael Church and Al-Khulafae Al-Rashideen Grand Mosque in the capital city, Asmara. In the morning hours, a prayer service was conducted led by His Reverence Abune Basilios I, 5th Patriarch of the Orthodox Tewahdo Church of Eritrea, along with heads of various dioceses and other Church leaders. Religious leaders from the Catholic and Lutheran Churches also participated in the service. During the event, Abune Basilios delivered a speech emphasizing the profound significance of the day and the solemn responsibilities it entails for every citizen. Merigeta Mulugeta Simon from the Office of the Patriarch, indicating that the martyrs paid their precious lives for their people and country, urged citizens to renew their pledge to live up to their expectations. Similarly, in the afternoon hours, Salat and Dua services were conducted at the Al-Khulafae Al-Rashideen Grand Mosque, led by Sheik Salem Ibrahim Almukhtar, Mufti of Eritrea. Sheik Salem Ibrahim said that the martyrs are our heroes who sacrificed their lives for independence, national sovereignty, and for us to live in peace and harmony. Smartphones banned from schools in Afghan Taliban's heartland
A ban on smartphones in schools issued by Taliban authorities in southern Afghanistan came into force, students and teachers confirmed to AFP on Wednesday, over concerns of "focus" and "Islamic law". The directive by the provincial Education Department in Kandahar applies to students, teachers and administrative staff in schools and religious schools. "This decision has been made to ensure educational discipline, focus", the statement said, adding that it was taken from a "sharia perspective" and that smartphones contribute to "the destruction of the future generation". The policy, which has already taken effect in schools across the province, has divided opinion among teachers and students. "We did not bring smart phones with us to school today", Saeed Ahmad, a 22-year-old teacher, told AFP. "I think this is a good decision so that there is more focus on studies," he added. Mohammad Anwar, an 11th grader, said "the teachers are saying if anyone is seen bringing a phone, they will start searching the students." Another 12th-grade student, refusing to give his name, said the ban would hinder learning in a country where girls are barred from secondary school and university as part of restrictions the UN has dubbed "gender apartheid". "When the teacher writes a lesson on the board, I often take a picture so I could write it down later. Now I can't. This decision will negatively affect our studies." 'Complete ban' The ban has also taken root in religious schools known as madrassas. "Now there's a complete ban. No one brings smartphones anymore," Mohammad, 19 years old madrassa student said. A number of countries have in recent years moved to restrict mobile phones from classrooms such as France, Denmark and Brazil. The Taliban authorities have already introduced a ban on images of living beings in media, with multiple provinces announcing restrictions and some Taliban officials refusing to be photographed or filmed. The Taliban's Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada called last week on officials and scholars to reduce their use of smartphones. "This is the order of the leaders, and we must accept it," a 28-year-old security forces member told AFP without giving his name as he was not authorized to speak to the media. "I have now found a brick phone ... I used WhatsApp on my smartphone sometimes, but now I don't use it anymore," he added. Some Taliban officials in Kandahar have started sharing their numbers for brick phones and switching off online messaging apps.
