Twitter: Breaking the Bird reveals the insider story of the social media site in new documentary for BBC iPlayer and BBC Two

BBC News20-03-2025

A new documentary for BBC Two and iPlayer will go inside the creation of a once-radical, groundbreaking tech startup in Twitter: Breaking the Bird. From Candle True Stories and Bitachon365 in association with CNN Original Series, the 75-minute documentary follows the insider story behind the meteoric rise and eventual sale of the revolutionary app featuring the voices of the founders themselves. Twitter: Breaking the Bird will premiere on BBC Two and iPlayer on 31 March.
In 2006, a group of tech entrepreneurs created the earth-shattering social media app, Twitter. In just a few years it transformed the way the world communicated. Twitter was adopted by celebrities, politicians and the everyday masses as a source for news, entertainment and community. Through firsthand accounts from some of its original founders and early employees, this is the inside story of Twitter's inception, explosive growth across the world, and the dark underbelly of online hate and harassment that emerged.
Twitter: Breaking the Bird features new interviews with co-founder and former CEO Ev Williams and co-founder Biz Stone, who share their personal experiences of how a group of idealistic friends set out to build a digital utopia, and how that vision morphed into the platform now owned by Elon Musk. Featuring additional insight from numerous Twitter employees from the rank and file to the C-suite, and analysis from journalists like Kara Swisher who have been covering the company since day one, Twitter: Breaking the Bird is the definitive tale of the corporate clashes and revolving door leadership behind the scenes at this once trailblazing company.
'It's thrilling to hear from the original creators of Twitter about their joyous, and sometimes chaotic, early days setting up the world's most disruptive tech platform; and shocking to see how their decisions over two decades shaped today's social media conversation,' said Tom Coveney, Commissioning Editor for the BBC. 'This is an entertaining and highly informative film that we hope will delight BBC viewers and stimulate debate across the UK.'
'Candle True Stories is proud to bring viewers an unprecedented look at the rise and evolution of Twitter,' said James Goldston, President and founder of Candle True Stories. 'While capturing the creativity, chaos, and conflicts that shaped the world's digital town square, this series challenges us to confront one of the most pressing questions of our time: Is there such a thing as too much free speech?'
'Twitter's story is one of both boundless innovation and cautionary lessons,' said Sheldon Lazarus, Executive Producer at Bitachon365. 'Through this series, we reveal the human ambition, conflict, and resilience behind the social media giant that shaped global conversations in ways no one could have imagined. At Bitachon365, we're proud to bring audiences a definitive and deeply personal look at the birth, rise, and reinvention of a tech phenomenon."
Twitter: Breaking the Bird was commissioned for BBC Two and iPlayer by Jack Bootle, BBC Head of Commissioning, Specialist Factual. It is executive produced by James Goldston and Ricardo Pollack for Candle True Stories, Sheldon Lazarus for Bitachon365, and Amy Entelis and Lyle Gamm for CNN Original Series. Fred Hepburn is co- executive producer and the series director is Kate Quine. Tom Coveney is the Commissioning Editor for the BBC.
Twitter: Breaking the Bird will premiere on BBC Two and iPlayer on 31 March.

Love Island fans 'work out' brutal recoupling twist after dramatic cliffhanger

Love Island fans are convinced the Islanders will be shocked by a brutal twist following a shock recoupling announcement at the end of Sunday night's episode of the dating show Love Island fans were surprised as they received a text announcing there would be a recoupling in the villa - with the power in the girls' hands. Confused fans thought the timing was "random" - and they're now convinced there's a huge twist to come. At the moment, there's an even number of girls and boys after Malisha was dumped. It came after single girls Toni and Malisha went on a date with new bombshell Harrison. He chose to bring Toni back, and the two coupled up. Everyone is now coupled up, and therefore there won't be any left single after tomorrow night's reshuffling. ‌ Although there may not be a dumping straight after the re shuffle - fans think one may be following straight after. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter to discuss, fans are convinced viewers will finally be getting their say - with a public vote after. ‌ "They're recoupling then we vote for least compatible #LoveIsland," said one fan, as another penned: "It shouldn't have ended on a cliffhanger but probably means the aftermath of recoupling is chaos #LoveIsland," said a third, as another said: "I bet there would a recoupling and public vote." A fourth later agreed: "Noooo, that recoupling is going to be juicy #loveisland." The shock recoupling came after a dramatic day in the Love Island villa. Once again, it was the games that brought all the drama, as the Islanders played a brutal game of spin the bottle. The Islanders were swapping partners left, right, and centre as they were given a series of difficult questions to answer. ‌ Helena ruffled feathers when she landed on a dare and Dejon dared her to kiss the person that she'd chose to recouple with, leading to her kissing new bombshell Harrison. She was later left shocked when Shea was told to issue a one-word comment to each of his fellow Islanders. When he got to Helena, Shea called her a "mug," although Helena saw the funny side of it. "I think every given opportunity Harry has mugged me off left, right and centre," she said. Later, Megan pulled a truth card, and Harry asked her how she really felt about Conor. Megan is currently happily coupled up with Tommy. However, in a shock twist on Friday night, Conor, who is coupled up with Emily, revealed he fancies Megan. Megan revealed the two had "unfinished business" from the start. Will Conor and Megan go any further?

Love Island fans 'in disbelief' as Shae issues 'wild' comment to fellow Islander

Love Island fans were left in shock after Shae issued a brutal comment to Helena as the Islanders played a game of Spin the Bottle during Sunday night's episode The drama continued on tonight's Love Island as another game revealed some home truths. In the latest episode, the Islanders sat down for a brutal game of Spin The Bottle - and of course, drama followed. One Islander who stole the show, however, was Shae. The rules were simple, whoever the bottle landed on, had to take a card which read either truth or dare. It was then left up to the Islander's to get creative and think about a truth or dare for that specific person. ‌ When it got to Shae's turn, he was asked to go around the firepit and deliver one word to describe each of his fellow Islanders. He called Shakira cute, while calling his former partner Yasmin fake. However, it was Helena who got the most brutal comment. ‌ "Mug," he said, referring to her back and forth with Harry, who has continued to flirt with Yasmin and Shakira, even sharing three kisses with Yasmin on the Hideaway Terrace. However, it looked like Helena saw the funny side of the comment, saying she "agrees" with his brutal words. "I think every given opportunity Harry has mugged me off left, right and centre," she said. During the comment, fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share their disbelief as one penned: "Shea said Mug and didn't even flinch I'm screaming #LoveIslandUK #loveisland, while another agreed: "shea calling helena a mug to her face is sending me tho #loveisland!" "'Helena. Mug.' is f*****g wild," said a fourth, while another said: "MUG?! The cackle I just cackled". ‌ Shae entered the villa as a bombshell alongside Islander Remell. Although Remell formed a connection with Alima as soon as stepping into the villa, Shae's journey has been a bit more difficult. He was originally coupled up with Yasmin, however, things didn't work out for the pair, as they went their separate ways. Yasmin then formed a connection with Harry - although his eyes have continuously gone back to Shakira. Elsewhere, Helena landed on a dare and Dejon dared her to kiss the person that she'd chose to recouple with, leading to her kissing new bombshell Harrison. ‌ Later, Megan pulled a truth card, and Harry asked her how she really felt about Conor. Megan is currently happily coupled up with Tommy. However, in a shock twist on Friday night, Conor, who is coupled up with Emily, revealed he fancies Megan. Responding to Harry's question, Megan tells the group: "Me and Conor got on from the start and that got cut short so I feel like there's unfinished business there, as you would say [Harry]'. Will Conor and Megan go any further?

Love Island fans 'concerned' as Islanders 'go missing' from villa

Love Island fans have been left baffled with one Islanders lack of airtime on the ITV2 show - as they question whether she's gone 'missing' from the villa after two weeks The drama is heating up in Love Island, as the Islanders heads continue to turn. On Friday night, the Islanders and fans were left in shock when Emily and Toni engaged in a fiery debate. Tonight, it was Emily and Shakira who clashed. However, fans have been left baffled as they claim one Islander has 'gone missing' from the show amid all the drama. ‌ OG girl Alima first coupled up with Blue - but it wasn't until bombshell Remell walked in that she formed a connection. ‌ Fans were over the moon when their favourite had built a connection - however, they've now been left fuming with the lack of airtime the pair have been getting. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: "is alima still in that villa?? #LoveIsland," as another questioned: "WHERE IS ALIMA ?? #LoveIsland" Another even went as far as to say: "I'm about to file a missing person report for Alima. That screen time was diabolical #LoveIsland #LoveIslandUK," as a fourth penned: "need to put a missing person's alert for alima WHERE IS SHEEEE #loveisland." Another confused fan penned: "Are Alima and Remell still in the villa? Not even a mention in the morning recap cause we've seen nothing from them in days." Elsewhere, the fallout from Friday continued tonight, as Shakira took Emily to the Minifirepit to explain her side of things. ‌ 'I feel like in situations, it's a case of reading the room a little bit…I feel like you've not made an effort with us," she said. Later when Shakira mentioned Toni having a bad day, she added: 'Just cause she's in a bad mood doesn't mean I can't be in a good mood…you should have come to me'. ‌ The two didn't agree, and left things how they were. However, the argument was later reignited when Shakira heard Emily telling the rest of the group about the conversation. The drama doesn't end there for Shakira, as she's later gets flirty with Harry in the snug. 'So you've spoken to Ben and called things off with him?" he asks, as Shakira replies: "Nothing to do with you by the way, before that goes to your head'. Shakira and Harry coupled up on Day 2, causing Sophie to be dumped from the villa. However, they called things off when Harry got flirty with Helena, and Shakira went back to her Day 1 partner, Ben. Now, with things over officially with Ben, will Shakira and Harry attend to their unfinished business?
