Adani Power Ltd has inched closer to acquiring the bankrupt Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd, a former subsidiary of Reliance Power Ltd, adding to a list of distressed but strategically located power assets as it strives towards its goal.
The National Company Law Tribunal on 18 June approved Adani Power's ₹ 4,000 crore resolution plan to acquire VIPL following a majority nod in February by the distressed company's committee of creditors.
Adani Power aims to increase its 17.55 GW of power-generating capacity—including thermal plants across states and a 40 MW solar project in Gujarat—to 30.67 GW by 2030, making it the largest private sector capacity expansion in the country.
With its latest acquisition, Adani Power will gain control of VIPL's 600 MW thermal power plant in Butibori, Nagpur, comprising two 300 MW units. The plant has a long-term power purchase agreement with the Maharashtra government for 308.5 MW, ensuring stable cash flows and potential for future scale-up.
The VIPL deal follows Adani's recent acquisitions of Dahanu Power ( ₹ 815 crore), Lanco Amarkantak Power, and Coastal Energen ( ₹ 3,330.88 crore), underscoring the group's strategy to drive growth.
On Thursday, 19 June, Adani Power shares fell 3.2% to ₹ 533.20 each on NSE, while the Nifty 50 held steady, shedding just 18.80 points amid geopolitical tensions because of the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. VIPL's insolvency
Vidarbha Industries Power was admitted into insolvency in September 2024 after CFM Asset Reconstruction moved the tribunal under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
On 24 February this year, Adani Power informed stock exchanges that VIPL's lenders had approved its revival plan, subject to the terms of the letter of intent and necessary regulatory approvals.
Adani Power had emerged as the successful resolution applicant after a competitive process that attracted bids from several major players, including Capri Global Holdings, CESC Ltd, Hindustan Thermal Projects, Jindal Power, JSW Energy, NTPC Ltd, Orissa Metaliks, Vedanta Ltd, and Shriniwas Spintex Industries.
Under the approved plan, Adani Power will pay ₹ 4,000 crore against total admitted liabilities of ₹ 6,753 crore.
The Adani entity has been directed to complete the payment within the stipulated timeframe. 'The Resolution Applicant is directed to make payment of the entire Resolution Plan amount within the time period stipulated under the Resolution Plan, failing which the entire amount paid shall stand forfeited," a Mumbai bench of the NCLT said in its 18 June order.
As per the plan, the funding will be arranged through internal accruals or financing by eligible affiliates, with the flexibility to raise capital via equity, debt, preference shares, or external commercial borrowings. Reliance Power's exit
VIPL was originally established as a special-purpose vehicle by Reliance Power to develop a 600 MW thermal power plant in Butibori, Nagpur, under a concession from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. The project was later converted into an independent power project.
In September 2024, Reliance Power announced that VIPL was no longer its subsidiary after settling ₹ 3,872 crore in corporate guarantees extended on its behalf.
As part of the settlement with CFM Asset Reconstruction, all associated obligations were released and 100% of VIPL's shares were pledged in favour of CFM. VIPL had defaulted on loans from Axis Bank and State Bank of India, which were later acquired by CFM ARC. CA Rudramurthy BV suggests a cautious, sector-specific approach; 5 insurance & defence stocks to bet on
CA Rudramurthy BV, MD, Vachana Investments, says CA Rudramurthy BV suggests monitoring Bank Nifty and Nifty closing values. Crude oil and dollar-rupee movements are also important. Financials, especially insurance companies like HDFC Life, SBI Life, LIC, and Max Financial, show promise. Defence sector stocks, specifically Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), are favorable. A cautious, sector-specific approach is advised. ADVERTISEMENT We always feel that you have been positive on the markets indeed with your bullish stance. Today the Nifty once again crossed past the 25,000 mark. What does it mean and what should the investor strategy be like? CA Rudramurthy BV: First of all, at index level, Nifty has made repeated attempts to break this 25,050 zone and now we are more or less closer to that. But I want to see whether we can close above 25,050 level and if yes, then I will say the move between 24,450 and 25,050, the consolidation of about 700-800 points is already done and dusted. Pharma, chemicals offer contrarian bets in stock-specific market: Hiren Ved We have to see whether we can close above 25,050, which is very crucial or again getting back to those support of 24,450, 24,500 cannot be ruled out. For me, even at the current market price, we are still in the range. I want to see a close of about 25,050 on Nifty and similar levels on Bank Nifty. Support is there at around 55,100 and below that, we have Bank Nifty strong support at 53,500 where the range is and on the upside, resistance is kicking in at 56,200. We are more or less there, but we are yet to close above 56,200 on Bank Nifty. So, to make it very clear, Bank Nifty should close above 56,200 and Nifty has to close above 25,050 and then one can say we have decisively broken out or we have to still wait on. Look at Brent crude. Crude prices are trading above $76 per barrel on the spot level decisively and even if you look at dollar-rupee movement, the dollar-rupee is decisively trading above that 86.50. So, for me, Brent is yet to come down. Coming to dollar vs rupee, again the dollar is yet to come down. Trump will now say for two weeks he will do nothing and he will give space for the Iran-Israel war to continue, but tomorrow again Trump might post another tweet and there can be escalations this weekend. So, I am bullish, but I will be very cautious and I will be very sector specific and stock specific. Let us wait and watch and then take a call next week. But till then, be very sector specific and stock specific. But speaking of being stock specific, what would be your calls? What are your long positions? CA Rudramurthy BV: For me, definitely financials will continue to do good whether you want to pick up something like insurance companies or NBFCs which are all allied groups of financials, which can do very well. So, for me, insurance as a sector can perform very well. ADVERTISEMENT Look at HDFC Life, look at SBI Life, and even LIC in the cash market to buy. For that matter, Max Financial also looks very good. For me insurance looks very strong and this can be the next big theme. And even defence for that matter can do very well, but you have to be very stock specific when it comes to defence. I like two stocks in defence – BEL and HAL – which still offer great value even at current market prices. I will be avoiding Mazagon Dock or Garden Reach and all other counters which are more or less there with high valuation, but BEL and HAL are very good at current market price. Pro-Israel Hackers Steal $90 Million In Iranian Crypto Heist, Then Lose All
A pro-Israel hacking group on Wednesday drained over $90 million worth of cryptocurrency from an Iranian exchange. But multiple crypto tracking firms believe that Gonjeshke Darande, or 'Predatory Sparrow' in Farsi, lost all of the proceeds from the heist after reportedly 'burning' them in the process. The funds are now inaccessible after they were stored in 'vanity addresses' for which they do not have the cryptographic keys, The Guardian reported. On June 18, the group said it hacked the Nobitex exchange, a day after claiming they destroyed data at Iran's state-owned Bank Sepah amid escalating tensions between Israel and the Islamic Republic. Cryptocurrencies such as Doge, Ethereum and Bitcoin were taken from digital wallets on the Iranian exchange Nobitex, which has been connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to crypto tracking firm Elliptic, over $90 million in cryptocurrency was transferred from Nobitex crypto wallets to hacker addresses. The stolen funds were routed to addresses containing some variation of the term 'F*ckIRGCterrorists'. In a social media post on X, Predatory Sparrow confirmed that it had targeted Nobitex and later released its source code. 'Predatory Sparrow would not have the private keys for the crypto addresses they sent the Nobitex funds to, and have effectively burned the funds in order to send Nobitex a political message,' Elliptic said. Predatory Sparrow is frequently reported in Israeli media as having Israeli connections, although there has been no official proof of the hackers' identity or nationality. 'Although there is no confirmation yet that the funds were moved by Predatory Sparrow, the hack appears to be motivated by the recent escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran,' Elliptic added. Nobitex claims to have over 7 million users and is Iran's main cryptocurrency exchange. Past investigations by independent reporters have revealed linkages between Nobitex and IRGC-linked ransomware operatives and individuals close to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The attack occurred amid growing tensions between Israel and Iran, with the two countries exchanging missile strikes, targeting crucial military installations. On Thursday, the US said it would wait for another two weeks before getting directly involved in the conflict, while Russia warned Israel against targeting the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Earlier, President Donald Trump said his patience was running out with Iran. He issued threats to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who then hit back, saying any intervention from the US would result in 'irreparable damage.'
