'Bharat bahut sundar desh hai': Croatian students speak Hindi to welcome PM Modi

Mint5 days ago

In a historic first, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden visit to Croatia has stirred heartfelt celebrations among both the Indian diaspora and local Croatian citizens — including Hindi speaking students, who warmly welcomed him in the Indian language.
Elizabeth, a Croatian student from the Department of Indology at the University of Zagreb, expressed her joy, saying, 'I am very excited to be here. It will be a great pleasure to meet PM Modi.' Another student added, 'PM Modi's visit is a big thing for the entire nation... I like speaking Hindi.' A third student simply affirmed, 'India is a wonderful nation, and I would love to visit India.'
The Prime Minister's visit, part of the final leg of his three-nation tour following stops in Cyprus and Canada for the 51st G7 Summit, has been marked by an outpouring of enthusiasm from the Indian community in Croatia.
Upon his arrival in Zagreb, PM Modi posted on X, 'A short while ago, landed in Zagreb, Croatia. This is a special visit, the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister to a valued European partner. I am grateful to Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport.'
Members of the Indian diaspora gathered in large numbers to greet him. One attendee remarked, 'It looks like the entire nation has come here to welcome PM Modi.' He further told ANI, 'PM Modi has put India on the path of development... India is on the path to becoming 'Vishwaguru'... It is a matter of honour for us that PM Modi is coming to Croatia.'
Chandrashekhar, a Canadian citizen originally from Mysore and currently holidaying in Croatia, said, 'We are very fortunate that PM Modi is here and we get a chance to greet him and show our respect... As Indians, we feel very proud that he is visiting here.'
Yoga Guru Mahamandleshwar Swami Vivek Puri also welcomed the Prime Minister's presence, saying, 'It is important for us that the Prime Minister of India is coming here, especially for us practising Yoga and following Sanatan Dharma, because he started the International Yoga Day. With this day, many people started to understand that Yoga is not just an Indian tradition but a tradition of all humans.'
Highlighting India's transformation, Swami Vivek Puri added, 'This visit is a great opportunity to show that India is not a poor or dirty country, and that India, in fact, is a great country. India is changing. India is laying out so many kilometres of highways per day. That is something that people in Europe, especially Croatia, need to know.'
Ajitananda Das Brahmachari, who has lived in India since 2012 and considers it his second home, shared his excitement: 'We feel very privileged to welcome PM Modi. There are so many similarities between Croatian and Indian people... The whole diaspora is welcoming him wholeheartedly.'
PM Modi's visit marks the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, underlining the growing strength of Indo-Croatian ties. He is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and meet with President Zoran Milanovic.

Long Queues At Embassy, Over 300 Indians Leave Israel: NDTV Ground Report

New Delhi: Hundreds of Indian nationals have begun departing Israel using land routes as the conflict between Tel Aviv and Iran escalated after the US bombed Tehran's three key nuclear sites. Outside the Indian Embassy in Israel, buses were lined up today morning and people formed queues with packed bags in their hands. An NDTV journalist reporting from ground zero saw many Indian nationals, including students, waiting near the embassy in Israel to return home. With Israeli airspace closed and commercial flights suspended, over 300 Indian nationals have started taking the land route. They are being taken to Jordan or Egypt, from where they will be flown to New Delhi. The first batch of evacuees has already left Israel. There are reportedly about 18,000 Indian nationals currently living in Israel. When the US joined Israel's conflict against Iran on Sunday, triggering fears of a full-blown war in the Middle East, India extended its 'Operation Sindhu' to Tel Aviv. Last week, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said that India will evacuate those Indian nationals "who wish to leave" Israel. "Their travel from Israel to India will be facilitated through the land borders and thereafter by air to India. The government of India accords the highest priority to the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad," it had said. New Delhi has asked all Indian nationals to register themselves with the Embassy of India in Tel Aviv at if not already registered. "In case of any queries, they may contact the 24/7 Control Room established at Embassy of India, Tel Aviv: telephone numbers: +972 54-7520711; +972 54-3278392; email: it said. Operation Sindhu in Iran India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate its nationals from Iran last week as Tehran opened its otherwise closed airspace exclusively for Indian evacuation flights. Over 1,400 Indian nationals have been evacuated so far. Chants of "Hindustan Zindabad" have been echoing through the Delhi Airport as flights carrying the nationals land. Thousands of Indian students, most of them from Jammu and Kashmir, are stranded in Iran. According to the deputy chief of mission at the Iranian embassy, Mohammad Javad Hosseini, around 10,000 Indians are living in Iran, and those wishing to return home are being evacuated.

Former MP and ex-Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin eyes Jubilee Hills bypoll ticket

Azhar pads up again, but pitch is getting crowded Following the sudden demise of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath, the race for the Jubilee Hills bypoll ticket is heating up within the Congress. A former BRS MP who switched sides just before the Lok Sabha elections is now eyeing the MLA ticket and has launched an aggressive campaign. But former MP and ex-Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who contested from the seat last time, is not backing down. He has already declared that he alone is in the race and will contest again. However, TPCC chief B Mahesh Kumar Goud struck a neutral note, saying that four names would be sent to the high command, and a final decision would be taken at the top. Meanwhile, the ex-BRS MP is lobbying hard, meeting key party leaders and hoping to send Azharuddin back to the pavilion before the innings even begins. MLAs rock the boat, who's steering? A PIL in court, four Congress MLAs pointing fingers at their own government and quite a few raised eyebrows in the ruling party. MLAs Anirudh Reddy (Jadcherla), Yennam Srinivas Reddy (Mahbubnagar), Murali Naik (Mahbubabad), and Rajesh Reddy (Nagarkurnool) have filed a petition in the High Court over encroached land near Khajaguda lake where a builder is raising eight towers, 47 floors each. It is said that a key minister might be the invisible hand guiding this move to embarrass the chief minister and flag concerns to the high command about his handling of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development portfolio. Some party leaders are wondering aloud: Was the courtroom drama really necessary? Couldn't this have been settled with a closed-door chat with the CM? Tapped, but not everyone's on the line Word is, even Gandhi Bhavan's PRO, Kappara Hariprasad —who drafts press notes and sets up media briefings — got a call from the SIT in the phone-tapping probe. But curiously, some of the Congress big guns didn't find a place in the 618-name longlist of 'eavesdropped elite'. Insiders say the SIT is relying on call logs from service providers, who only keep data for 15 days, and certain names are still missing. With the Telangana elections held way back in November 2023, that means they're trying to solve a jigsaw with half the pieces missing. At a recent chitchat, when someone asked a certain MP, who is believed to be close to the current CM, why he hadn't been summoned, the parliamentarian just chuckled and said, 'Guess 'Tapping Rao' didn't want to hear me crying about my financial woes!'
