Made in Singapore: First locally-made Kia, the EV5, officially launched, Lifestyle News

AsiaOne29-05-2025

Kia has launched its first locally-made model, the EV5 electric SUV, which will be assembled at the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre Singapore (HMGICS) in Jurong.
The announcement to build the Kia EV5 locally was first announced at the Singapore Motor Show in January, and the car has now been officially unveiled during an event held at HMGICS on May 28.
While the EV5 is the first Kia-branded car to be made here, HMGICS has been assembling two Hyundai models, the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, since 2023.
The Kia EV5 is an SUV that's slightly smaller than the Ioniq 5, and Kia's local distributor Cycle & Carriage, which will be responsible for retailing the car here, announced that it will be offering the EV5 in three variants - Air, Earth and GT-Line.
Being made in Singapore means that Kia can tailor the EV5 to fit local requirements, and two of the variants, Air and Earth, come with 134hp motors that enable them to qualify for a Category A COE. AsiaOne understands that these variants will be exclusive to Singapore and will not be exported to other markets.
While both the Air and Earth produce the same output of 134hp and 310Nm of torque, the difference between the two is the size of the battery. The Kia EV5 Air has a 64.2kWh battery, which gives it a range of 400km, and can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 36 minutes using a 102kW DC charger.
The Kia EV5 Earth meanwhile has a larger 88.1kWh battery, which gives it a longer range of 540km, and can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 38 minutes when using a faster 141kW DC charger.
The most powerful version of the EV5 though is the GT-Line, which features two electric motors and all-wheel-drive, for a total output of 308hp and 480Nm of torque, and therefore goes into COE Cat B.
It uses the same 88.1KWh battery as the EV5 Earth, with charging time remaining unchanged, but range drops to 470km due to the extra load in powering the dual motor setup.
The Kia EV5 comes with a host of premium practical features that are designed to offer great convenience. Highlights include the heating and cooling drawer that's located beneath the rear centre console that can keep food and drinks warm or cold while on the move. The drawer is standard on the EV5 Earth and GT-Line models.
Other noteworthy features include a fingerprint recognition sensor that allows users to access various saved settings easily, like the seating position and infotainment preferences, as well as an updated version of Kia's remote smart parking assist system, which lets drivers park the car using the smart key while standing outside of the car.
Pricing for the Kia EV5 starts at $194,000 with COE (as of May 2025) for the Air variant, and goes up to $210,600 with COE for the Earth model. The Kia EV5 GT-Line meanwhile retails for $260,000 inclusive of COE.

Car review: Kia EV5 stands tall while being middle of the road

High 5: Standing above 1.7m, the EV5's stature is befitting that of an SUV. ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANG SINGAPORE – Chinese cars are bulldozing their way up the sales chart, leaving many an incumbent heaving and wheezing in their wake. From my armchair, it appears the only ones who can stand up to the Sino onslaught in the long run are the South Koreans. In terms of design, functionality and user experience, electric cars from Hyundai and sister brand Kia are a notch above most European brands. And they are a tad less fastidious than the Chinese, while offering nearly as good value for money. Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Johor and Grab in talks to enhance cross-border travel agreement, Singapore News

The Johor government and ride hailing company Grab are in discussions to update the Cross-Border Travel Agreement between Singapore and the Malaysian state. This aims to make travel between Singapore and Johor smoother, said Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi in a statement posted to Facebook on Thursday (June 19). Stating that these discussions were raised during a recent meeting with Grab's senior management, amongst other key matters, Onn Hafiz explained that the talks form part of broader efforts to enhance Johor's tourism and transportation sectors ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026 (TMJ 2026). TMJ 2026 is a statewide campaign which aims to attract 12 million tourists to Johor and generate RM42 billion in revenue, reported Bernama. "The discussions also explored potential cross-border collaborations involving the Malaysian and Singaporean transport ministries, alongside the role of Grab and other public transport providers in facilitating smoother travel between the two countries," Onn Hafiz said. AsiaOne has reached out to Grab for more information. The Chief Minister also revealed that an integrated, physical and digital platform, which showcases must-visit attractions in Johor, was in the works. This initiative holds strong potential to help tourists access information more easily online and offline while further boosting the state's tourism sector, he said. "It will also create new income opportunities for the people, stimulate the local economy and position Johor as a modern, open and globally welcoming state." [[nid:718706]]

'Drastic' rental hike and low footfall behind cafe Two Bakers' decision to shutter, Lifestyle News

Two Bakers in Lavender is closing down due to a rental hike and dwindling footfall, the owners said. The cafe announced their mid-August closure via an Instagram post two weeks ago. In the post, they had expressed their gratitude towards customers and reflected on their 11-year journey, stating: "This decision was incredibly difficult, as our journey here has been deeply intertwined with yours." Speaking to AsiaOne today (June 19), Two Bakers shared that a "drastic" 35 per cent increase in rent coupled with fewer customers led to the decision. "There used to be a healthy amount of small offices littered around the area. These offices have since been vacated and there has not been new tenants," they explained. "In addition, many people are still in hybrid work [arrangements]. Seeing that we aren't in a residential estate, that reduces footfall too." That the lease is ending and the economy outlook is "uncertain" also make "good timing" for the closure, they added. For those who aren't aware, Two Bakers is a pet-friendly cafe specialising in artisanal pastries and handcrafted rosti. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Two Bakers (@twobakerssg) Items on their menu include the Omakase Dessert Box (from $28), various rosti dishes like Rosti Eggs Benny ($23) and other cafe favourites like pasta, brunch options and more. They also serve food for pets. The cafe is run by co-founders Jessica Yap and Erica Chin, both of whom are alumni of Le Cordon Bleu Paris. Fans reacted to the Instagram announcement, with several expressing sadness for their closure. "Sad to hear. Good memories. Been here in the very early stages of Two Bakers. Will drop by before it's closed," read one comment. "Oh no... one of the OGs in Lavender cafes. Sad to see you go," another stated. Pet owners who frequented the cafe were also reluctant to part with it. "Oh no! We will miss you guys! It's such a nice indoor pet- and baby-friendly place! And of course we love the innovative pet food that we don't even get at home. Hope to see a bigger roaming store for us!" wrote a commenter. Read another: "Oh no! We will miss you guys in the meantime! To a bigger pet-friendly space next!" The cafe told AsiaOne this might not be goodbye for good. They expressed that they plan on coming back and sticking around for at least another decade. "We still want to keep the brand alive as it is much loved by many. Like our post said, we grew up and shared at least one chapter of our lives together! We will continue to be on a lookout to resume operations but we have to be patient for the right time and place so we can be around for another decade," Two Bakers shared. And while their Omakase Dessert Box will only be available in-store and online until mid-August, fans will still be able to get their hands on some of their bakes after the closure. According to the cafe, their Chinese New Year staples will continue to be available online. [[nid:719040]]
