MyKiosk project a 'national embarrassment', SUPP Piasau man calls for full audit

MIRI (June 13): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Piasau branch has urged the federal government to launch a full audit of the MyKiosk project, which has drawn growing public criticism over its implementation and impact.
Its publicity secretary Tan Lik Jin said the project, initially promoted as an initiative to support small traders, has instead become a national embarrassment due to inflated costs, poor site selection, and low usage.
'This is a high-cost, low-impact project that has rightfully drawn criticism from the people across political lines,' said Tan, who is also a councillor with Miri City Council (MCC), in a statement.
He cited concerns over kiosks costing up to RM25,000 each, many of which are located in remote and rarely frequented areas, and questioned the transparency of the tender process.
Tan also criticised leaders from Miri Democratic Action Party (DAP) for remaining silent during initial calls for accountability, only to later shift blame to local councils.
'The truth is, this project was fully initiated and managed by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Malaysia, under a DAP minister. Local authorities had no decision-making power, only implementation role,' he said.
'For Miri DAP to point fingers at the local level while shielding their own party colleague in Putrajaya is not only dishonest, it is a betrayal of public trust.'
He went on to accuse DAP of engaging in 'termite-style destruction', portraying themselves as champions of accountability in public while quietly serving the interests of political allies in Peninsular Malaysia.
Tan added that the failure of the MyKiosk project was not limited to Sarawak, citing similar issues in Pakatan Harapan-governed states such as Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan where kiosks have reportedly been left empty and underutilised.
'If even these states cannot make the project work, how can they blame local authorities here in Sarawak?' he questioned.
Tan urged the federal government to carry out a full audit of project expenditures, contractor appointments, site selection processes, and actual kiosk usage data ― and to release the findings to the public.
'Taxpayer money has been wasted. The people deserve answers, not excuses,' he stressed.
He also called on Miri DAP to stop the 'political theatre' and hold their federal leaders accountable. miri MyKiosk national embarrassment SUPP

Selangor govt will not compromise on 3R issues

SABAK BERNAM: The Selangor government will not compromise on issues relating to race, religion and royalty (3R), as such matters could undermine the state's harmony and unity. Selangor Rural Development, Unity and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail said issues involving racial and religious sensitivities must be handled firmly and wisely, given the state's role as a key national hub with a multiracial and densely populated society. 'Selangor must surely serve as an example, not only within the country but also to the world. Despite our ethnic diversity, we have managed to build a nation founded on strong unity. 'That is why we constantly work with the Ministry of National Unity through various awareness and unity programmes,' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Santuni MADANI and Misi Jelajah Peduli Ummah: Sejahtera Insan Al-Falah programmes at the As-Syukriah Mosque, Parit 8 Gambut, Sungai Panjang, here today. He said this in response to a news report yesterday, which cited data from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stating that 40,515 pieces of potentially fake news content had been identified and reported by platform providers from 2023 until May this year. Of the total number, 11,819 were related to 3R content, of which 7,571 had been deleted. Rizam said one of the initiatives being actively implemented was strengthening the role of the Rukun Tetangga Areas, particularly in rural areas, to foster patriotism and racial unity. Meanwhile, he said no official complaints concerning 3R issues had been received so far, except for minor community-related matters that could be resolved locally. Earlier, Rizam said the programme organised by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI), in collaboration with the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisation (MAPIM), was seen as effective in bridging the gap between the people and government agencies, particularly in delivering services directly to the target group. He said the programme, which began yesterday (June 21), featured a range of beneficial activities tailored to different age groups, including health screenings, dakwah sessions, sports, e-sports competitions and exhibitions by government agencies. Meanwhile, JAWI director Hanifuddin Roslan, who was present at the programme, said the department had presented cash contributions of RM220 each to 253 asnaf (eligible tithe recipients) identified through the Selangor Zakat Board. In addition, he said the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ) of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) had presented mock cheques amounting to RM10,000 to the As-Syukriah Mosque, RM5,000 to five suraus under its supervision, and RM5,000 to the Desa Permai Parit 8 Quran and Fardhu Ain Integration Class. Hanifuddin said the programme was also JAWI's second corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative held this year outside its administrative area, with more locations to be included in the future.

Stampin MP allocates RM230,000 to enhance facilities at SK St David

Chong distributes festive cookies to the locals. KUCHING (June 22): Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has announced a total allocation of RM230,000 for SK St David near Kampung Bumbok, aimed at creating a more conducive learning environment for its pupils. The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman said RM120,000 from his Member of Parliament (MP) fund will be used to purchase nine smart TVs for classroom use, supporting the school's teaching efforts. 'This is in line with the digitalisation agenda of the Ministry of Education (MoE) for all schools. While the Budget allocation for MoE is not sufficient to provide such facilities, I will complement it with my MP's allocation for the benefit of the students,' he said during a Gawai Dayak cum Father's Day celebration held in Kampung Bumbok last night. Chong also revealed that the remaining RM110,000, which DAP Sarawak had helped apply for last year, has been approved by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to upgrade the school's football field. He added that Padawan Municipal Council is the implementing agency for this project. Chong, who is also Padungan assemblyman, said he will continue to do his best in providing the best for his constituents, especially in education, although his MP fund is 20 per cent less than the Gabungan Parti Sarawak's (GPS) state assembly persons' total allocation for the Stampin parliamentary constituency. 'We shall continue to oversee the implementation of the project so that there will not be any delays,' he added. Chong Chieng Jen education school facilities SK St David
