Emotional Ronaldo rejoices in Portugal winning Nations League

The Herald09-06-2025

Portugal skipper Cristiano Ronaldo shed tears of joy as they won their second Nations League title on Sunday, insisting that winning trophies with his country beats all club honours.
Ronaldo's 138th international goal in the second half took the final to penalties after a 2-2 draw with Spain, with the substituted 40-year-old forward looking on from the sidelines as Portugal netted all five spot kicks to claim the title.
The triumph, which left the five-time Champions League winner in tears, was Ronaldo's third on the international stage, accompanying his 2016 European Championship and 2019 Nations League winners' medals.
'What a joy,' Ronaldo told Sport TV. 'First of all for this generation, which deserved a title of this magnitude, for our families. My children came here, my wife, my brother, my friends.

PSG stunned in FIFA Club World Cup shock result

Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 1-0 Club World Cup defeat against Brazilian side Botafogo on Thursday in a hardfought battle between the reigning champions of Europe and South America. A first-half goal from Brazilian international Igor Jesus proved the difference as Botafogo all but sealed a place in the knockout rounds in front of a 53 699 crowd at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. French champions PSG are widely regarded as one of the favourites for FIFA's 32-team tournament after a dazzling season which culminated with a scintillating 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final last month. But their hopes of securing a victory which would have seen them become the first side to reach the last 16 were stymied by a resilient performance from their opponents from Rio de Janeiro. 'A lot of people wondered, but we showed how strong Botafogo is,' goalscorer Jesus said after the win. 'It was a difficult game, and we had to defend well, and we did our job and scored a goal. 'We're really happy – we knew how important this game was. One team was the champion of the Champions League, the other team was the champion of South America,' added Jesus, who had been strongly linked with a move to English Premier League side Nottingham Forest earlier this year before opting to stay with the Brazilians to play in the Club World Cup. 'I think I made the right choice to stay in Botafogo,' Jesus quipped. PSG coach Luis Enrique said his team had expected a tough battle. 'We knew it was going to be a very difficult match – they defended very well,' the Spaniard said. 'This Club World Cup is very intense and difficult, and all the teams are highly motivated, especially when they're playing against us.' The PSG manager though was adamant that the European champions still had plenty of time to resurrect their campaign. 'If there's a team that can turn it around, it's our team,' he said. 'We've got to analyse this and there's things we can improve. But I think our performance was good.' PSG picked up where they had left off in Sunday's 4-0 Group B rout of Atletico Madrid, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia testing Botafogo goalkeeper John with an early curling effort after just two minutes. But that early effort was as close as PSG came to scoring in a scrappy first half punctuated by a series of niggling fouls that prevented the European champions from settling into their passing game. Botafogo's midfield trio of Marlon Freitas, Gregore and Allan worked tirelessly to close down Vitinha, denying the skilful PSG playmaker time and space to launch attacks despite dominating possession. Instead it was Botafogo who took the lead with a goal against the run of play on 36 minutes. Jefferson Savarino's perfectly weighted through ball split the PSG defence and sent Jesus racing through on goal. The Botafogo striker did brilliantly to wrongfoot the covering Willian Pacho before sweeping a shot that took a slight deflection past PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on its way into the net. PSG continued to dominate possession through the second half, and spent long periods camped in the final third. But Botafogo's defence held firm and the result leaves the Brazilians firmly on course for the last 16, with a final group game against Atletico Madrid to come in Pasadena on Monday. Rising Bok star Aphelele Fassi knows he has a target on his back

Springbok fullback Aphelele Fassi said he is developing and adapting his style to meet the growing analysis done on him. Rising Springbok fullback Aphelele Fassi said he is well aware that international teams will be doing more analysis on him since his breakout season last year, but that only drives him to keep developing his game and even change his style where needed. The 27-year-old made his international debut in 2021, and has a total of 11 Test caps under his belt. But he only became a regular feature in the Springbok squad last year, where he played six matches for the national side, including Tests against Wales and Portugal and matches against New Zealand, Australia and Argentina in the Rugby Championship. He shone especially in the latter tournament, kicking well and finding gaps at pace, scoring four tries in those four games. His opposition did not know him well then. They certainly do now, ahead of the next international season, starting with the Springboks' match against the Barbarians in Cape Town on 28 June. 'That is why we are sportsmen' 'Each and every year that you play, you have a target on your back,' Fassi said. 'I think that is why we are sportsmen. That is why we want to develop our game and be able to not be predictable. It is up to me to tick those boxes and play a different style, or come up with a different approach in how I go into games and how I play.' The fullback has been a star at the Sharks for a long time, playing all his domestic rugby there since his debut in 2019. In terms of making the step up to international rugby, albeit over several seasons, Fassi said he had handled the pressure 'pretty well'. 'I feed off energy and I feed off guys… I see how guys do things and I try repeat the same thing,' he said. 'We set high standards within this group and we are not worried about what happens on the outside. If we can set ourselves standards and maintain those standards within this group, we are happy.' Fassi getting back to his best after injury Fassi was sidelined for almost four months after hurting his knee and ankle during a United Rugby Championship match against the Stormers in December. While he was glad to string six matches together since his April return, Fassi said he is still eager to hit top form again. 'It was good to get six games back from injury, be able to get my leg back. I am pretty excited for what is coming up next and how I can be able to develop my game and be able to play a lot of games.' 'I never know when my best is, honestly. Because I just want to keep on improving as a rugby player and being able to learn the way of rugby.'
