Foundation builds book kiosk at Semenyih school

TO spark a love for reading, a book kiosk has been set up at SK Bandar Rinching in Semenyih, Selangor.
The RM75,000 facility was gifted by Eco World Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Eco World Development Group Bhd (EcoWorld).
Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said he had witnessed first-hand the teachers and students' enthusiasm for the facility.
Calling it encouraging, Lee expressed certainty that the kiosk would grow into a vibrant hub of learning, curiosity and inspiration.
'We want to make books easily accessible and ensure that reading becomes an enjoyable part of daily life.
'At Eco World Foundation, we believe education is the cornerstone of a better future and every child should have access to tools that help them thrive.
'Reading is one of the most powerful ways to unlock knowledge and opportunity.
'This kiosk is more than just a corporate social responsibility project as it reflects our deep commitment to educational empowerment,' he said at the kiosk handover to SK Bandar Riching headmaster Azril Sham Mohamed.
Also present were EcoWorld president and chief executive officer Datuk Chang Khim Wah and divisional general manager Evon Yap.
The kiosk, funded by Eco Majestic township in Semenyih, is expected to benefit the school's 2,700 pupils.
Construction began in February and was completed by mid-March.
The kiosk will offer pupils, teachers, parents and the wider school community access to diverse reading materials.
To ensure everyone has a chance to enjoy the facility, the kiosk will operate twice a month.
This initiative builds on Eco World Foundation's past support for SK Bandar Rinching.
In December 2023, it donated 150 sets of desks and chairs worth RM25,000, while its Students Aid Programme (SAP) supports 27 underprivileged pupils at the school.
On a broader note, SAP supports some 2,000 students annually at 117 schools nationwide, with essentials including school supplies, uniforms and financial assistance.
To date, 106 students under the SAP have continued on to tertiary education.
Eco World Foundation on a whole undertakes humanitarian projects to mitigate social shortcomings in education and literacy, health and well-being, poverty and lack of community infrastructure throughout the country.

Investment Scam Syndicate Busted In Puchong, 10 Held
SERDANG, June 23 (Bernama) -- Police have arrested 10 individuals believed to be involved in a foreign currency investment scam that caused losses amounting to RM399,787, in a raid at a premises in Bandar Puteri, Puchong last Friday. Sepang police chief ACP Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the suspects, comprising seven men and three women aged between 21 and 38, were believed to have assumed various roles, including managers, platform developers, customer service agents and administrators handling company documents. He said initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating for the past six months, targeting both local and foreign victims. 'The syndicate allegedly offered lucrative returns on initial investments to gain victims' trust to continue investing through a self-developed app. 'It operated under two unregistered companies, and police are currently investigating another company believed to have been used to facilitate fund transfers from victims,' he told a press conference today. Muhamad Farid said checks on the application revealed a total of 2,597 individuals believed to have fallen victim to the scam, comprising 2,482 Malaysians, 111 Indonesians and one each from India, Mongolia, South Africa and Bhutan. 'During the raid, police seized three computer monitors, two CPUs, six laptops, 14 mobile phones and a Wi-Fi modem, all believed to have been used in the illegal operations, with a total seizure value estimated at RM45,000,' he said. He said none of the suspects had prior criminal records and all tested negative for drugs. 'The suspects were initially remanded for one day and released on police bail, but have since been re-arrested in connection with a report lodged in Taman Melawati,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code and Section 137(1) of the Financial Services Act 2013.

AMESU Signs Historic Six Collective Agreements With Plantation Employers
SHAH ALAM, June 23 (Bernama) -- The All Malayan Estates Staff Union (AMESU) marked a historic milestone today by signing six Collective Agreements (CAs) simultaneously with plantation sector employers. The signing ceremony, which was witnessed by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, involved representatives from the Malayan Agricultural Producers Association (MAPA), IOI Group of Companies, Dara Lam Soon Sdn Bhd, Arah Kawasan Sdn Bhd, HK Gua Musang Sdn Bhd, and YPJ Plantations Sdn Bhd. In his speech, Sim noted that AMESU, established in 1927, is one of the country's oldest trade unions, representing over 5,000 workers, while MAPA serves as the umbrella body for 120 major plantation companies nationwide. 'This ceremony marks an extraordinary achievement in the history of workers' rights, as this is the first time six collective agreements have been successfully signed simultaneously,' he said. He noted that the agreements are expected to boost worker welfare and enhance productivity across the plantation sector. Under the new agreements, all AMESU members will receive salary increases of up to 12 per cent. Interestingly, Sim said the increment is retroactive, effective from Jan 1, which means that workers will also receive backdated payments ranging from RM3,000 to RM10,000, depending on their job grade, years of service, and allowance structure. Furthermore, he said workers covered under the agreements between AMESU, MAPA, and the six plantation firms will no longer be subject to the minimum wage threshold of RM1,700 per month. 'Instead, the agreed salary structure sets a new starting wage at RM1,800 per month, which is higher than the current minimum wage,' he added.

Govt aims for 200,000 individuals to be discharged from bankruptcy in 2025
SHAH ALAM: The government is targeting 200,000 individuals to be discharged from bankruptcy by the end of this year. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that so far, approximately 186,000 individuals have been successfully released from bankruptcy. She said the record was obtained by the Malaysian Insolvency Department following the government's efforts in giving a second chance to the affected group to continue their lives. "We hope by the end of the year, we can give a calculation (people released from bankruptcy status). So in total, we hope to target 200,000 this year," she said. She told reporters after the launch of the Financial Literacy Programme for Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) and Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) in 2025 by Malaysian Insolvency Department at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam on Monday (June 23). Also present was UiTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib @ Shabuddin. When tabling Budget 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar said the Second Chance Policy would be expanded to young people aged 40 and below who have debts not exceeding RM200,000, starting last year. Meanwhile, Azalina said a total of 25,578 bankruptcy cases were recorded from 2021 to May 2025 from the age of under 25 to 55 and above. Of that total, she said, 10,145 bankruptcy cases were recorded involving the 35 to 44 age group. She said that by gender, men recorded higher bankruptcy cases than women, at 18,590 during the same period. Meanwhile, Azalina said the programme organised on Monday was one of the proactive steps taken by the Madani government to bring laws and financial management knowledge and literacy to the people, especially students of higher learning institutions who are about to enter the working world.
