Umno divisional meets key to raising grassroots issues

The Sun11-06-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The ongoing Umno Divisional Delegates' Meetings nationwide serve as the ideal platform for grassroots members to raise issues which require the attention of the party's top leadership.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki expressed hope that all representatives involved can make the most of the meeting space, which will run until July 27, so that all issues can be raised at the Umno General Assembly, from Aug 20 to 23.
'I recommend party members take this opportunity to engage in discussions at their respective divisional levels, and ensure that grassroots voices are brought to the attention of the Umno leadership,' he told reporters after attending the MARA-Petronas Automotive Entrepreneur Development Programme (PUMP), here, today.
Asyraf Wajdi also described the party's nationwide branch-level meetings, held from April 7 to May 25 this year, as very encouraging, noting a significantly higher turnout compared with the previous year.
He said that the positive response reflected a renewed sense of enthusiasm among grassroots members, who appeared increasingly committed to fulfilling their respective responsibilities.

222 Johor projects worth RM10b yet to start, says MB

JOHOR BARU: Johor has 222 projects scheduled between 2016 and 2024 that have yet to commence. The projects, worth around RM10 billion, include various public facilities such as roads, mosques, hospitals and clinics, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi. "When I ask in meetings, they say, 'Don't worry, we'll check with the respective ministries, we'll get it approved.' "All these projects are for the people, but they still haven't started," he said in his speech at the 2025 Umno Tebrau division delegates' meeting here on Saturday. Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno liaison chairman, said Umno leaders in the state risk incurring public anger if the projects are not implemented. "Council members, village heads, community leaders – don't just attend meetings to look good. "If the projects don't go through, if the allocations are not used properly and appropriately, let me ask – who will the people be angry with? "At the agency? Or at the Umno leaders? They will be angry with us. That's why we need to go down to the ground and inspect things ourselves," he said. The Machap assemblyman said the federal government should place its trust in the state leadership to approve and implement projects in Johor. He suggested that the federal government initiate a pilot programme with Johor to evaluate the proposal's effectiveness. "If you don't want to implement it nationwide, make Johor the pilot state. "Insya-Allah, the Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders in Johor can be trusted and will shoulder these responsibilities for religion, race and homeland," he said. Onn Hafiz expressed disappointment at the lack of implementation. "I don't like making people angry. "But when it comes to the welfare of the people, don't test me. I will fight all the way for the people – for the people of Johor. That is the spirit of Johor Umno. "What we say is not just rhetoric. If we say it, Insya-Allah, we will deliver it," he said. Also present at the event were Johor Umno liaison deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and Johor Umno secretary Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman, who is also Tebrau Umno division chief.

UMNO division wants unconditional reinstatement of Hishamuddin

THE Sembrong UMNO Division has once again proposed the immediate and unconditional lifting of Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein's suspension, saying it is the wish of the majority of delegates. Division chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdul Rashid said this marks the second year the division has raised this motion, adding that they want the former senior defence minister's return to active party roles ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16). 'Last year, Sembrong UMNO made the same proposal to revoke Hishammuddin's six-year membership suspension. The members' wishes are clear—they want the suspension lifted without conditions,' Abdul Ghani said after the Sembrong UMNO Division Delegates' Meeting today. Meanwhile, UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani urged the party to form strong, cohesive teams in every division to prepare for the GE16, expected in about two years. Speaking at the UMNO Ketereh Division Delegates' Meeting in Kota Bharu, he emphasised training these teams now to avoid issues like sabotage and to identify capable leaders who align with public expectations. 'These teams need to be trained now so we can identify who is capable. We want to build the nation with leaders who meet the people's expectations,' he said. Johari highlighted that 40% of GE16 voters will be young, with diverse priorities, particularly among university students and graduates. He also stressed the importance of power-sharing to ensure political stability and national progress. 'They fall into three phases: 18-year-olds, university students, and recent graduates. Those aged 18 may vote based on their parents' influence, but the other two groups think differently and will consider leaders who can benefit future generations,' he added. — June 21, 2025 Main photo credit: PR Newswire

Sembrong Umno renews call to lift Hishammuddin's suspension

KLUANG: Sembrong Umno has renewed its call for the party leadership to lift the suspension of its former division chief, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, without conditions. The motion was tabled at the division's annual delegates meeting today, marking the second consecutive year it has sought the reinstatement of the former defence minister. Johor Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who officiated the meeting, opened his speech by crediting Hishammuddin as his political mentor. "Sembrong is not just a political constituency. "It's where I first learned the meaning of struggle, and the man who brought me into this journey was Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein." He said this during the meeting at the Sembrong Umno Community Hall here. Although Hishammuddin was not present, Onn Hafiz acknowledged grassroots sentiment and pledged to convey the motion to the party's leadership. Umno suspended Hishammuddin for six years on Jan 27, 2023, amid a purge that saw other senior figures — such as former Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, former Information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan and former Selangor chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar — removed or disciplined. Hishammuddin has refused to appeal his suspension, maintaining that he has still not been told the reason behind the disciplinary action. Sembrong Umno chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdul Rashid said that the motion reflected grassroots demand for the reinstatement of the veteran. He added that Hishammuddin's experience and influence were vital to Umno's strength, especially with the 16th General Election looming. "It would be good for the party if leaders like him were brought back. He carries a unique aura in Sembrong, and I am almost certain voters here want him to remain their MP." Ghani urged Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to seriously consider the matter, saying Hishammuddin's leadership was needed to stabilise and fortify the party.
