Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal conducts comprehensive review of key maritime projects
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 9 (ANI): Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, conducted extensive review meetings on Friday in Mumbai.
In light of the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Union Minister Sonowal reviewed key maritime projects and directed the officials to ensure that business remains as usual.
Sonowal also reviewed measures to ensure cargo operations' smooth and regular movement.
Major organisations under the ministry, including the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), Indian Port Rail and Ropeway Corporation Ltd. (IPRCL), Indian Port Global Ltd. (IPGL), the Directorate General of Shipping, and the Mumbai Port Authority attended the meeting.
The Union Minister also reviewed the progress of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat, one of the ministry's flagship initiatives.
In a detailed interaction with the CMD and directors of SCI, the minister reviewed current operations, fleet augmentation, and long-term expansion strategies aligned with the government's Vision 2047.
As India's strategic national shipping line, SCI plays a pivotal role in advancing maritime self-reliance and capacity enhancement.
An in-depth review of the Greenfield Mega Port project at Vadhvan was held with JNPA Chairman Unmesh Wagh and senior officials.
Union Minister Sonowal stressed the need to fast-track the port's development, citing the Prime Minister's vision of making India a global maritime leader.
The minister also met with IPGL Chairman Sunil Mukundan to assess the company's global performance.
Discussions included the progress and plans for Chabahar Port in Iran and Sittwe Port in Myanmar, a key project that aims to expand India's maritime footprint internationally.
A separate meeting was held with IPRCL Chairman M.K. Semwal and Senior management to assess progress on critical rail connectivity projects, particularly those supporting IWAI operations in Assam and infrastructure across major ports.
The minister urged IPRCL to prioritise the development of port-linked rail tracks given rising cargo volumes.
In addition, the Union Minister interacted with the newly constituted National Shipping Board (NSB), welcoming its Chairperson and members.
Sarbanand Sonowal emphasised the board's strategic role in policy guidance and expressed confidence in its contribution to shaping India's maritime future.

He said the duo are skilled and full of potential but lack the opportunities to succeed in today's economic environment. 'The truth is stark: we assemble, we import, but we don't build. China profits." he said, criticising India's dependence on imported goods and lack of robust manufacturing. He further alleged that the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, once heavily promoted by the government, is now being quietly rolled back. "With no new ideas, Modi ji has surrendered. India's gross direct tax collections rise 4.86% to ₹5.45 lakh crore in FY26 so far, net collections dip – Here's why
The gross direct tax collections in India for the financial year 2025-26 rose by 4.86 per cent to nearly ₹ 5.45 lakh crore as of June 19, from ₹ 5.19 lakh crore reported during the same period the previous year, according to data released by the Income Tax Department. There was a marginal dip of 1.39 per cent in the net tax collections, which stood at ₹ 4.59 crore, due to a 58 per cent increase in refunds issued, PTI reported. As of June 19, advance tax collections for the financial year 2025-26 were ₹ 1.56 lakh crore, a 3.87 per cent growth. The surge in advance tax collections was primarily due to a 5.86 per cent increase in corporate advance tax payments, while collections from non-corporate taxpayers decreased by 2.68 per cent. Even though corporate tax collections rose, the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) experienced a decrease, and the overall growth in collections was moderated by high refund outflows. The Income Tax Department recently launched the 'e-Pay Tax' feature, which is an online portal to make payments through the net banking facility of the authorised banks. The July 2024 Budget included a proposal for an extensive evaluation of the Income Tax Act of 1961. The aim was to streamline the Act for clarity, ultimately minimising disputes and litigation. On March 25, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned that the new Income Tax Bill will be discussed during the Parliament's monsoon session. The Finance Minister has previously indicated in his budget speech that under the updated tax structure, individuals with earnings up to ₹ 12 lakhs will incur no tax liability thanks to the raised rebate of ₹ 60,000.

Palaniswami on Saturday (June 21, 2025) echoed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's concern that the mother tongue is being sidelined in favour of English. Responding to Mr. Shah's recent remark that English-speaking Indians may soon feel ashamed, Mr. Palaniswami said the mother tongue holds an important place in society and added that everybody has their own views. 'He has spoken about the importance of the mother tongue. His concern is that more importance is being given to English than to native languages,' Mr. Palaniswami told reporters at the Coimbatore airport. On the Keezhadi excavations, Mr. Palaniswami said the party had already explained its role. 'IT Wing secretary K. Pandiarajan has detailed the steps taken during the tenure of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and by the government that followed. All necessary clarifications were provided,' he said. Asked about the Muruga Bhaktargal conference being held in Madurai, he said, 'In a democratic country, every citizen and organisation has the right to worship the deity of their choice. Those organising the Muruga Bhaktargal conference are exercising that right. I extend my wishes.' On allegations that DMK functionaries used obscene language in public, Mr. Palaniswami said, 'We have already condemned such remarks. People are disturbed by them.
