Dick Vitale has an extension with ESPN — and a college basketball event in the 86-year-old's honor
Dick Vitale is inextricably intertwined with college basketball, with his iconic voice, exuberant style and enthusiastic catchphrases melding into a soundtrack for nearly five decades of the sport's history.
And the broadcasting great's influence is sticking around next season, too, both in person on game days and through an addition to the college basketball calendar named in his honor.
ESPN announced Monday that Vitale has signed a contract through the 2027-28 season, while ESPN Events is launching the Dick Vitale Invitational — the first matchup coming with a season-opening tilt between Duke and Texas on Nov. 4 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Fittingly, the announcement comes on Vitale's 86th birthday, and months after he returned to the airwaves after being gone for two years amid a fourth battle with cancer. The Basketball Hall of Famer, also a former college and NBA coach, has been with ESPN since it launched in 1979 and called the network's first college basketball broadcast.
'So many times, awards and honors come to people after they're long gone,' Vitale said of the Invitational's birth in an interview with The Associated Press. 'And to get it while you're living is just a great, great feeling.'

The Suns are curiously expected to keep Jalen Green after Kevin Durant trade
After months of speculation, the Phoenix Suns finally agreed on a deal to trade Kevin Durant. They even got a decent package back for him in return. The draft capital that Phoenix received is fairly interesting as they now have the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They also received five additional second-round picks as part of the deal as well. But the most notable acquisition is Jalen Green, who has shown some flashes of greatness during his professional career. That includes two nods as Western Conference Player of the Week last season and one the season prior to that. Green was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and is still just 23 years old, born on the exact same day as Nique Clifford, who is a projected top-20 pick in the upcoming class. Even though Green has already signed his second NBA contract, which will officially begin next season, he is still younger than every player who was rostered by the Suns last season except for just rookie forward Ryan Dunn. However, per Basketball-Reference, he has played 78 percent of his minutes at shooting guard in the NBA. That is the same position as Devin Booker (68 percent) and Bradley Beal (78 percent) who are both unlikely to leave their team any time soon. That suggests Green would have made sense as a potential trade candidate for the Suns. However, per John Gambadoro, the organization is expected to keep him in Phoenix. It seems that the plan is to have Green and Booker share a backcourt with Beal presumably coming off the bench and leading the second unit. While neither Green nor Booker are natural point guards and floor generals, as of right now, that's what the new Phoenix front office is apparently planning. They could potentially use the No. 10 overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft to find a good complement to that core. But as of now, expect the Suns to re-tool around Booker and Green as their backcourt of the future.

ESPN 2025 NBA Mock Draft has UNC basketball star going early in second round
The North Carolina Tar Heels, who aced the basketball transfer portal earlier this offseason, still have a major roster need to fill at small forward. Many expected Drake Powell's return to UNC for his sophomore season, but Powell entered his name in the NBA Draft instead. Powell made a North Carolina return possible, but he's staying in the draft, thanks to a strong performance at the NBA Draft Combine. In a recent mock draft from ESPN NBA Draft Analysts Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo, Powell goes 31st overall – the second round's first pick – to the Minnesota Timberwolves. If Powell lands in Minnesota, he'll be joining an extremely-talented team led by the likes of Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert. The T-Wolves are currently in the Western Conference Finals, but they are in big need of small forward depth. During his lone season as a Tar Heel, Powell showcased he can be a special offensive talent, but defense is the highlight of Powell's game. UNC head coach Hubert Davis would typically assign Powell to the opposition's best scorer, with Powell proving to give those players fits. Today's NBA is dominated by iso ball and launching 3-pointers, both of which Powell is successful at, but defense will carve Powell out a spot in The League. Powell can perfect chase-down blocks, steal the basketball, rebound at high clips and race down the court for a dunk, or give you 10 points in 10 minutes.
