Brazil's bank lending picks up in April despite tight borrowing costs

Reuters29-05-2025

BRASILIA, May 29 (Reuters) - Brazilian bank lending accelerated in April despite tight borrowing costs, central bank data showed on Thursday, highlighting the resilience of economic activity even after aggressive monetary tightening.
Outstanding credit rose 0.7% from the previous month to 6.6 trillion reais ($1.16 trillion).
On a 12-month basis, credit growth picked up to 11.5% from 11.1% in March, driven by a 12.4% increase in household loans. Corporate lending rose 10.2%, faster than the previous month.
The expansion came despite a sharp interest rate hiking cycle led by the central bank to cool economic activity and tame inflation.
Since September, policymakers have raised the benchmark Selic rate by 425 basis points to 14.75%, its highest level in nearly two decades.
On Thursday, the central bank said following its financial stability committee meeting that it had observed mild signs of a slowdown in credit between January and March, both in the banking system and capital markets.
Still, it noted that credit growth remains historically high, reflecting economic resilience despite tighter financial conditions.
In April, the default rate on non-earmarked loans to businesses and consumers rose to 4.8% from 4.5% in March, while the average spread in the segment jumped to 31.3 percentage points from 29.4 points the month before.

Man Utd chiefs backed into corner over four deals crippling Ruben Amorim budget

Manchester United are determined to push through a number of high-profile sales this summer to bolster Ruben Amorim's spending power but the process is already proving complex for the Old Trafford hierarchy Jadon Sancho's salary is once again complicating his Manchester United exit. Italian champions Napoli and Juventus are both courting the 25-year-old winger but currently, would only be willing to pursue a loan that would enable them to share a percentage of his wages, worth £250,000 per week plus bonuses, with United. The Red Devils are adamant another loan is not feasible and are pushing for a sale after Chelsea paid a £5million penalty clause to send the England international back to Old Trafford. ‌ It's understood Sancho is open to a new experience in Serie A having previously held discussions with Juventus last summer before a deal collapsed over financials. ‌ Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford faces being left in limbo as Barcelona are working to finalise the arrival of Athletic Club attacker Nico Williams. Rashford has been holding out for a move to Catalonia following his six-month loan spell at Aston Villa but if Barca get the signing of Williams over the line, a deal looks off the table. Como are the latest club to make enquiries for £81.3m flop Antony but the Brazilian currently favours a return to Real Betis, who want to secure another loan for the 25-year-old. READ MORE: Antonio Conte makes statement about Man Utd transfer he did not think would happen United believe now is the perfect time to sell Antony following his eye-catching form in Spain, there has been loose interest from Bayer Leverkusen but his desire to rejoin Betis threatens to back the Red Devils into a corner. Earlier this month, Rasmus Hojlund also outlined his desire to stay and fight for his place at United while away on international duty with Denmark. Ruben Amorim is not actively looking to sell the 22-year-old but the Red Devils would be willing to sanction his departure for the right price if it enabled them to upgrade their forward options. ‌ Inter Milan were keen to explore a loan-to-buy deal which would have required United to take a significant hit on the £72m fee they paid Atalanta for the Dane in 2023 but they're now in advanced talks to sign Parma striker Ange-Yoan Bonny, instead. Hojlund's commitment to fulfilling his contract and potential under Amorim means a departure is not a given, particularly when sellable assets such as Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony actively want out. ‌ Rashford - valued at £40m - is willing to return to United training next month, if suitable offers for his services fail to materialise. It's been well documented that United must sell-to-buy following the £62.5m arrival of Matheus Cunha but to date, there has been little progress regarding departures.

Antony ready to take drastic action in bid to quit Man Utd for dream transfer

Manchester United and Antony want to part ways and the Brazilian winger is happy to make a sacrifice to facilitate a transfer in the coming weeks following his Real Betis loan Manchester United wantaway star Antony is prepared to take a 30 per cent paycut to leave Old Trafford this summer. The winger's decision has boosted the hopes of interested parties, namely Real Betis, of being able to complete a deal. Antony is said to currently rake in £150,000-a-week with the Red Devils and is willing to lower his expectations to facilitate a move. The drop would still see him ask for £95,000-a-week. ‌ United are hoping to bring in a fee for the former Ajax winger to boost their funds this summer, with the club requiring £32.58million to avoid a loss under the profit and sustainability rules. That figure is well short of the £85m United spent in 2022. ‌ Antony failed to make an impression following Ruben Amorim's arrival but found a new lease of life in Spain after making a loan move to Betis in January. The Brazilian registered 14 goal contributions in 26 games to help the club reach the Conference League final. Both Betis and Antony have expressed their desire to make the move permanent but there have been doubts that the La Liga side could afford such a deal. But Antony is willing to reduce his salary, per the MEN, which could prove pivotal. Antony has made his preference to return to Betis clear. "I love the club, the city, everything. The sunshine, the people, the food: it reminds me of Brazil," he said previously. "And most importantly, I've found myself. I wasn't playing much [at Manchester United ]. I needed to be happy in myself." Amorim is impatient to see new signings this summer, with the pace of United's transfer business this summer not quite yet kicking into gear. The Red Devils have added Matheus Cunha to their squad but have not made much progress on incoming or outgoing transfers. ‌ Amorim wants new players on the plane for United's three-game tour of the United States The United boss sees the tour as the ideal environment to integrate new players and to learn his system. The 40-year-old also wants United to offload players he does not want as quickly as possible. None of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony feature in his plans. Rashford wants to move to Barcelona, while Sancho has drawn interest from Italy after seeing his permanent move to Chelsea cancelled. The Blues paid a penalty to go back on their agreement with United.

Apple sued by shareholders for allegedly overstating AI progress

(Reuters) — Apple was sued on Friday by shareholders in a proposed securities fraud class action that accused it of downplaying how long it needed to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into its Siri voice assistant, hurting iPhone sales and its stock price. The complaint covers shareholders who suffered potentially hundreds of billions of dollars of losses in the year ending June 9, when Apple introduced several features and aesthetic improvements for its products but kept AI changes modest. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment. CEO Tim Cook, Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh and former CFO Luca Maestri are also defendants in the lawsuit filed in San Francisco federal court. Shareholders led by Eric Tucker said that at its June 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple led them to believe AI would be a key driver of iPhone 16 devices, when it launched Apple Intelligence to make Siri more powerful and user-friendly. But they said the Cupertino, California-based company lacked a functional prototype of AI-based Siri features, and could not reasonably believe the features would ever be ready for iPhone 16s. Shareholders said the truth began to emerge on March 7 when Apple delayed some Siri upgrades to 2026, and continued through this year's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9 when Apple's assessment of its AI progress disappointed analysts. Apple shares have lost nearly one-fourth of their value since their December 26, 2024 record high, wiping out approximately $900 billion of market value.
