Three Arabica coffee varieties ready for multi-location trial

Time of India30-05-2025

Mysuru: On the occasion of the 100th-year celebration of the Central Coffee Research Institute, Chikkamagaluru, scheduled for Oct 2025, three Arabica varieties, namely S 5085, S 5086, and S 5059, are set to be released for multi- location trial (MLT), and the S 4595 variety is to be released for planters' use.
All these four varieties were developed at the institute.
According to M Senthil Kumar, director of research, CCRI, Coffee Board, these are the F1 hybrid varieties.
F1 hybrids refer to first-generation offspring resulting from a cross between two genetically distinct parent varieties.
The S 4595 variety, known for its tolerance to the stem borer, is now available for use by planters. The white stem borer (Xylotrechus quadripes) represents a major pest that impacts Coffea Arabica (Arabica coffee) in Karnataka, where around 70% of the nation's coffee is cultivated.
This pest constitutes a significant risk to coffee plantations, especially in the coffee belt of the state, which includes Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan, owing to its damaging lifecycle and the favourable agro-climatic conditions present in Karnataka.
S 5059, which is an improved HDT-Catuai line with enhanced rust tolerance and yield; S 5085, which is an improved Chandragiri line with enhanced rust tolerance and yield, and S 5086, which is another improved Chandragiri line with enhanced rust tolerance and yield, are ready for the MLT.
These varieties are already planted in arabica growing areas of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as part of the MLT.
The CCRI invited names for these new varieties. The CCRI is looking forward to authentic names reflecting Indian coffee quality, tradition and innovation, regional (showcasing place and culture), simple and short, which are easy to say and recollecting 100 years of CCRI. June 30 is the last date for the nominations.

Pickle tales

Pickle is nothing less than a tangy and spicy staple of Indian cuisine. Almost every Indian loves to have it with the main course. Fruits and vegetables are fermented with spices, oil and vinegar to preserve them for a longer duration. Raw mango, jackfruit, garlic, lemon, chilli, tomatoes, the options are endless. Only an Indian can better understand the mouth-watering tanginess of pickle. In the olden days, every home kitchen — mostly women — had a secret recipe for pickles. But with time and modernisation, pickles have emerged as a business option and many brands are selling it with advertisements claiming theirs tastes like grandmother's making. These brands are attempting to deliver the nostalgic taste to urban dwellers who lack the resources to make pickle. Every food item is now available in processed and packed form, and the love for pickle remains strong. But no market-based packed pickles can ever match the taste of the home-made variety of yore. Grandmothers or mothers would preserve pickles in ceramic jars. Among the many memories of summer, one staying brightest is of the pickles. My mother used to prepare pickles on her own. It's an art that needs perfection, patience and right balancing of spicy flavours. Grandmothers and mothers prepare this delicacy every summer with all their fondness to be enjoyed the whole year. The mesmerising taste of pickle, no matter which fruit or vegetable it is of, holds special memories in our life. Every summer story is incomplete without discussing the flavours of taste, and pickle is one such part of it. kirtidimple3007@

Gujarat: Chimpanzee exhibit to open at SoU jungle safari to mark World Rainforest Day

The Statue of Unity Jungle Safari and Zoological Park in Ekta Nagar (formerly Kevadia) in Narmada district is all set to open the chimpanzee exhibit to the public on Sunday — to mark the World Rainforest Day on June 22, said officials familiar with the matter. The exhibit will house a male and two female chimpanzees, who had been in quarantine, following their arrival in India from Capital Zoo Wildlife Park in Abu Dhabi (UAE) in February this year. Officials said that a special enclosure for chimpanzees has been created in the Ekta Nagar to replicate their natural tropical habitat of the African forests. According to officials, the three chimpanzees had been quarantined and kept away from immediate public display to help them acclimate to the Indian climate but surroundings were created to allow them to 'experience a sense of their own habitat'. Officials added that the three chimpanzees had 'adapted very well and were at ease' in their new home, based on which the Statue of Unity authorities decided to bring them out for the public display area in the special enclosure created for chimpanzees.
