Which Cryptocurrency Is More Likely to Be a Millionaire Maker? Bitcoin vs. XRP
When people daydream about cryptocurrency investments, the fantasy usually ends with imagining how they will spend all of the millions of dollars they made. Yet very few assets have the horsepower to turn a modest investment into that kind of money. And with the market marching toward fresh highs again, two of the sector's leaders, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and XRP (CRYPTO: XRP), keep resurfacing in those millionaire-maker conversations. One is celebrated as digital gold; the other is quietly wiring real cash around the globe. Which of the pair is more likely to bring riches to investors? Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » Bitcoin shows the power of enforced scarcity Let's start by examining first principles. Bitcoin's protocol caps its supply at 21 million coins. So it can't experience debasement in the way that a fiat currency does. As many coins have been burned, lost, or otherwise rendered inaccessible, there will always be far fewer coins than that available for sale, which makes the supply proposition even sweeter. Demand is the other half of the equation, and in Bitcoin's case, it looks very favorable as well. In May alone, crypto funds pulled in roughly $7.1 billion of net inflows, most of which went into Bitcoin-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), thereby pushing their total assets under management to a record $167 billion. Other data indicate that a total of $11 billion has poured into digital-asset products during the past seven weeks. This is undeniable evidence that Bitcoin is in demand from asset managers. Scarcity plus new buyers is a potent combination for price. A very large proportion of Bitcoin is now being held at a profit based on recent prices. Fewer nervous hands holding coins that are underwater translates into fewer sudden supply shocks. Should ETFs see outflows or regulators reverse course, the float (coins available for public trading) would loosen and price momentum could stall quickly. Even then, the coin's halvings every four years or so will keep expansion of new supply shrinking, mathematically raising the odds that any dip is temporary rather than terminal. Now it's time to rain on the parade. With an investment of $10,000 today, Bitcoin would need to reach a market cap of around $210 trillion for it make you into a millionaire. For reference, that's roughly twice the size of the gross domestic product of the entire global economy in 2024. In other words, don't hold your breath for a small investment in this coin to make you into a millionaire. XRP's utility is a mixed blessing in this context Where Bitcoin leans on scarcity, XRP is built to move money as cheaply as an email, which is to say practically free. Ripple, the company that issues the XRP coin, is building it out to be the core of an entire ecosystem of financial products and services that are oriented toward the needs of the largest institutional investors out there. A recent corporate guide from Ripple pitches global e-commerce, which is now past a total value of $6 trillion in annual sales, as low-hanging fruit to market XRP to deliver faster settlement. Running even a small portion of those payments would require institutions to buy quite a bit of XRP, sending the coin's price aloft. Technical momentum is picking up too. In March, the XRP ledger's latest upgrade activated native automated market makers, letting anyone contribute liquidity and earn fees without clunky smart contract workarounds. That feature could deepen on-chain liquidity and make XRP spreads more competitive with fiat rails, which would in turn make institutional investors more interested in parking their capital on the chain, as it could support the transaction sizes they need. In April, Ripple folded its new RLUSD stablecoin into Ripple Payments, which now claims nearly $10 billion in trading volume since its December launch. The stablecoin is hosted on XRP's network, so its value contributes to the total value of the chain and the coin. Still, a few headwinds remain. XRP's economics depend heavily on Ripple's business decisions and its work to develop its features. A strategic misstep or a fresh legal tangle with the Securities and Exchange Commission could sap adoption severely and depress the coin's price. Other chains are competing with it to court the same institutional money, and in some segments, they're winning. Thus the coin's utility alone does not guarantee price appreciation. Which coin carries better millionaire odds? Neither XRP nor Bitcoin are going to make you a millionaire overnight. But both could be great wealth-building tools if you're willing to diligently dollar-cost average into a position and hold it for a handful of years. With that said, if your goal is simply to stack a nest egg that could cross seven figures within a decade or two, Bitcoin's path is clearer. It needs only continued scarcity-driven demand to succeed, which is something that the ETFs, a growing number of corporate treasuries holding it, and perhaps even governments will provide. In contrast, XRP requires both steady protocol evolution and a broad corporate shift toward on-ledger settlement of transactions in a few different categories to see its price reach meteoric heights. That can happen, but it involves more moving parts and a longer adoption curve, so it isn't as reliable a millionaire-maker. Should you invest $1,000 in XRP right now? Before you buy stock in XRP, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and XRP wasn't one of them. Billionaire Seth Klarman Holds Just 1 "Magnificent Seven" Stock in His Hedge Fund's Portfolio -- and He Just Bought More
Seth Klarman is a well-respected value investor with a global following. And there's good reason for that. His Baupost Group hedge fund returned an average of 20% per year over the first 30 years of its existence. That performance comes despite value stocks falling well out of favor over the last decade. But Klarman and his team emphasize that they "remain flexible in their application" of value investing. That means investing in stocks that are mispriced relative to their value, even if they won't show up on any stock screeners for deep value based on traditional metrics. As a result, this method can end up with some stocks that many investors would consider growth stocks, such as those found in the Magnificent Seven. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » But Klarman only sees one member of the vaunted group of trillion-dollar stocks as worth his and his investors' money, and he just added more of it to Baupost's portfolio. The only Magnificent Seven stock Klarman likes The Magnificent Seven is a group of stocks full of interesting opportunities for the right investor. And anyone who invested in any or all of them is probably happy with their returns over the last couple of years. But a few may not present the value necessary for an investment from someone like Klarman. As a group, they're relatively expensive based on traditional valuation standards. Four of the seven sport forward P/E ratios above 30, including Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) with its 168 times multiple. While Tesla could prove worth the price with its plans for a robotaxi service and humanoid robots, there's a lot of risk in buying the stock at its current price, especially as its core car business is facing stiff competition abroad. The other high-priced members are growing quickly and on relatively solid footing, but it's hard to argue they're a bargain at their current prices. But one member of the group trades for a valuation below the S&P 500 's average, and that's kind of surprising for a stock with such strong growth potential. The stock has consistently traded at or near the lowest valuation of the Magnificent Seven, giving investors plenty of opportunities. That's why Klarman and his team have built up a position in Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL), including adding 652,000 more shares in the first quarter, increasing its stake in the company by 46%. The best value among the Magnificent Seven There are good reasons for Alphabet to trade at a lower valuation than the rest of the group. It carries some significant risks. The first big risk facing Alphabet is regulatory risk. The company faces several lawsuits in the U.S. and elsewhere that could result in interventions to reduce any monopolistic powers, particularly in web search and digital advertising. That could include things like selling its Chrome browser or its ad marketplace and ending agreements like its $20 billion per year traffic acquisition partnership with Apple. Despite those risks, the impact on Alphabet's operations could be muted given the strength of its brand and product. That's where the second risk comes in. Many see artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT eating into Google's dominance of web search. In a hearing last month, Apple's Senior VP for Services, Eddy Cue, suggested iPhone users are searching less in 2025 and spending more time in AI apps. However, the data from Alphabet doesn't support the narrative that it's losing significant share to AI. In fact, AI may be a boon to its search business thanks to three new features the company's introduced to leverage the power of large language models. Its AI Overviews (and now AI Mode) have led to increased user engagement and satisfaction, as users expand the search queries they send to Google. Importantly, management says it's able to monetize searches with AI Overviews at the same rate as searches without it. Two other AI-powered features driving search are circle-to-search and Google Lens, which have increased valuable product searches on Google. One piece of Alphabet's business that has seen very strong results without much regulatory threat is its Google Cloud platform. The cloud computing segment is seeing strong demand fueled by AI, which pushed its revenue 28% higher year over year in the first quarter. Moreover, its operating margin expanded to 17.8% from just 9.4% last year, and there's still significant upside from there. Alphabet is also home to "Other Bets," which includes the leading self-driving car company, Waymo. Waymo's made significant progress in its robotaxi business and remains years ahead of the next closest competitor. It now completes 250,000 paid trips per week, as of its most recent update at the start of May. As the market expands, Waymo could prove a significant growth driver for the company. All this is to say, the company as a whole should conservatively be able to produce double-digit revenue growth for the foreseeable future despite the regulatory and competitive challenges it faces. And as Google Cloud and Waymo scale, they should enable even faster earnings growth. At a forward P/E close to 18, Alphabet's stock looks like a bargain among the Magnificent Seven. It's no wonder Klarman and his team have continued to add shares around this price. Should you invest $1,000 in Alphabet right now? 2 Cryptocurrencies to Buy Now Before They Soar 140% and 580%, According to a Wall Street Analyst
XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) and Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) advanced 565% and 410%, respectively, in the last three years. But certain Wall Street analysts expect the cryptocurrencies to climb even higher in the next few years: Geoffrey Kendrick at Standard Chartered says XRP will top Ethereum by 2028. At current prices, XRP must climb 140% to $5.10 to surpass Ethereum's market value of $302 billion. David Puell at Ark Invest expects Bitcoin to hit $710,000 by 2030. That implies about 580% upside from its current price of $104,000. Here's what investors should know about XRP and Bitcoin. XRP: 140% implied upside The investment thesis for XRP centers on its ability to facilitate fast and cheap cross-border transactions. It is the native digital asset on the XRP Ledger, a blockchain created by fintech company Ripple to disrupt SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications), the system banks generally use to send money internationally. XRP transactions settle in seconds and cost a fraction of a cent, but SWIFT transactions may not settle for days and often incur larger fees. Yet, very few financial institutions have adopted XRP as a bridge currency to facilitate cross-border payments. I doubt that will change in the future, because cryptocurrency prices are volatile. Why send money as XRP when its price could plunge in a very short period? However, fast and inexpensive transactions mean that the XRP Ledger is also ideal for tokenized assets, a market that will hit $19 trillion by 2030, according to Ripple. Tokenized assets are real-world assets represented as digital tokens on a blockchain. For instance, Guggenheim Treasury Service recently tapped the XRP Ledger to issue digital commercial paper, a fixed-income security. Greater adoption of the XRP Ledger increases demand for the native cryptocurrency, XRP, which could make the token more valuable over time. However, I see a bigger catalyst in the pending approval of several spot XRP ETFs. Bitcoin has gained 125% since the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024, and XRP could see similar price appreciation. Bitcoin: 580% implied upside The investment thesis for Bitcoin centers on its status as digital gold. Investors see the cryptocurrency as a hedge against inflation and the devaluation of fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar. In fact, the U.S. Dollar Index has declined 10% year to date, but Bitcoin has advanced 13%. That trend is likely to continue in the years ahead because, unlike fiat currencies, Bitcoin supply is limited. Importantly, institutional investors are increasingly comfortable owning Bitcoin. Forms 13F filed for the first quarter indicate that the number of large asset managers (with $100+ million in securities) with positions in the two most popular spot Bitcoin ETFs -- the iShares Bitcoin Trust and the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund -- more than tripled in the past year. Meanwhile, many companies are adding Bitcoin to their balance sheets. Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has essentially turned itself into a Bitcoin investment vehicle. It owns 582,000 BTC, purchased at an average price of $70,086, and it plans to invest another $56 billion through 2027. Other companies are following the same playbook, including Mara and Semler Scientific. Here's the bottom line: XRP and Bitcoin could be worth much more in the future due to the catalysts outlined above, But neither is a wise investment for anyone uncomfortable with extreme volatility, and investors should never anchor to price targets set by Wall Street. Finally, between the two, I would choose Bitcoin in a heartbeat because it has the distinct advantage of being the largest, most liquid, and best known cryptocurrency. Additionally, spot Bitcoin ETFs make it easy to get Bitcoin exposure. The same cannot be said (yet) about XRP. Should you invest $1,000 in XRP right now? Before you buy stock in XRP, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and XRP wasn't one of them.
