Then came the big moment. Leon Draisaitl scored the winning goal in overtime, tying the series 2-2.
In a post-game interview, Draisaitl said, 'That's what we do. We're a resilient group, and we're never going to quit, no matter what.' He admitted their first period was rough but said the team stayed calm and stuck to the plan.
'We started to get going a little bit. That's the intensity we need when the puck drops,' he added.

How will the Edmonton Oilers retain Connor McDavid? With all the heat from the cup bid, contract discussions gain momentum

For the last few weeks, Connor McDavid has been at the center of NHL headlines, either for elite on-ice performance or for the uncertainty of his next contract. As the Edmonton Oilers try to pick themselves up once again after a Stanley Cup failure, the attention turns sharply toward the franchise's greatest asset. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With just a year left on his current contract, McDavid's future will soon be moving from wild speculation to serious negotiations, with nothing being higher-staked on the long-term aspirations of Edmonton. Contract projections soar for McDavid amid rising cap and playoff frustration, with much speculation The Oilers have enjoyed the brilliance of McDavid for nearly a decade, with the question now being for how much longer they can keep their generational star before his current contract of eight years and $100 million comes to an end, a contract signed in 2017, and discussions have begun to get serious concerning the next. He has never gone after the highest dollar; however, things on the financial front change faster each day. NHL's upcoming $95.5 million salary cap jump lends every forecast an added dimension. The insiders have said that he can get paid more than he is getting. Even though his highest salary would probably be estimated at around $19 million per season, McDavid's track record points to him accepting a little less money for the sake of providing some flexibility to his team. Draisaitl, his teammate, is locked at $14 million per annum, making it an inescapable precedent for management to steer through. The problems of the Oilers are not only about contracts. McDavid dazzled again in the 2024-25 campaign, hitting 100 points for a second consecutive time but having to settle for a pitiable showing under unfamiliar circumstances. Again, dueling with Draisaitl for production in the postseason, in the Finals, the goal tallies evaded McDavid, with the Floridians' defense stifling the top weapons of Edmonton, and the Oilers lacked a little more punch in the secondary to make a difference. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now What this postseason displayed was the dependence of Edmonton on its two superstars. The core should have been talented but expensive, including names like Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Darnell Nurse. Should McDavid's next deal command a higher share of the cap, the front office will be forced to get creative in putting a championship-caliber team around him. Also Read: Connor McDavid's next contract is going to be a defining moment for himself and the Edmonton Oilers. While the extortionate numbers will make all those ridiculous headlines, the real test will be whether those dollars really could now go on to deliver McDavid a Stanley Cup. So while it's legacy for McDavid on the line, for Edmonton, it's running out of time to put together a team that can finally bring it home.

Connor McDavid's 2026 Free Agency: Could the Philadelphia Flyers Be the Next Destination?

Connor McDavid might become an NHL free agent in 2026—and if he does, the Philadelphia Flyers could be one of the handful of teams that have the cap room and roster possibilities to mount a serious bid. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sounds far-fetched, but the future of the Edmonton Oilers' superstar forward is more tenuous than ever after another disappointing playoff exit. With cap space and emerging talent, Philadelphia Flyers might be bidding on Connor McDavid Connor McDavid, 28, has a final season remaining on his eight-year, $100 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Though an extension sooner than July 1 is a possibility, the five-time Art Ross Trophy recipient was evasive when discussing his future at his post-season media availability. The Philadelphia Flyers, who are expected to have close to $50 million in cap room and a budding youth movement spearheaded by Matvei Michkov, make the notion—as wishful thinking—more plausible. 'This core has been together for a long time, and we've been building to this moment," Connor McDavid said. "With that being said, ultimately, I still need to do what's best for me and my family. But of course, there's unfinished business here. If I feel that there's a good window to win here over and over again, then signing is no problem." Connor McDavid FULL Year-End Press Conference That business, of course, is a Stanley Cup—one that still seems to be out of reach for Connor McDavid, with several deep playoff pushes. If Connor McDavid hits free agency in 2026, the Philadelphia Flyers would be in a special position. The roster could be loaded with youth talent on affordable rookie deals, such as Matvei Michkov, Jett Luchanko, and next year's 2025 No. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 6 overall draft pick. The long-term IR designation of Ryan Ellis may release another $6.25 million in cap room, making it affordable to sign McDavid to a maximum-value deal—up to 20% of the estimated $104 million cap, or $20.8 million per year. While Philadelphia continues to rebuild, a nucleus with Michkov, Travis Konecny, Tyson Foerster, and Sean Couturier has potential. Depth down the middle might include McDavid, Couturier, James Hagens, and Luchanko—a group of the highest caliber by any NHL measure. Any reason to believe McDavid won't sign an extension with Oilers? Goaltending remains a priority issue, much as it has for McDavid in Edmonton. But with plenty of draft assets and financial room to play, the Flyers may be able to afford to prioritize a long-term solution in goal by the time 2026 rolls around. Also read: The odds are long, but the scenario isn't impossible. If Connor McDavid prioritizes winning and sees Philadelphia as a team on the rise, the Flyers could very well be in the mix. They've shown patience during their rebuild—and maybe it's because they're waiting for a superstar worth taking a swing at.
