High schooler wins nat'l Olympic short track trials
A high school senior won the South Korean Olympic short track speed skating trials that wrapped up Sunday, earning a chance to represent the country at the 2026 Winter Games in Italy.
Rim Jong-un, 17, finished first overall among male skaters with 102 points after two rounds of the 2025-2026 season national team trials at Mokdong Ice Rink in Seoul. Rim shot to first place after the opening phase, thanks to his victory in the 1,500 meters, a runner-up finish in the 1,000m and a 17th-place showing in the 500m. Then, in the second stage, Rim once again captured the 1,500m title while finishing third in the 500m and 10th in the 1,000m.
Rim won two gold medals at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Junior Short Track Championships in February, and he has made the senior national team for the first time.
Hwang Dae-heon, the 2022 Olympic champion in the 1,500m, finished second overall to Rim with 89 points.
Hwang, 25, had come up short in the national team trials for the 2024-2025 season while also causing controversy by committing a series of fouls on teammate Park Ji-won at ISU World Cup, world championships and national team trials.
Shin Dong-min, a triple gold medalist at last year's world juniors, finished third in the trials with 55 points. The 20-year-old will also be making his senior international debut.
The top three finishers for men will skate in individual events and relays at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The next two skaters in the trials, Lee Jeong-min and Lee June-seo, will only be eligible for the relays.
Park Ji-won, a three-time world champion who has also won three overall World Cup titles, finished well out of contention at the trials. Despite his decorated international resume, Park has never skated at an Olympics.
On the women's side, Kim Gil-li, the 2024 ISU World Cup overall champion, won the trials with 128 points, followed by Noh Do-hee with 69 points.
Three-time Olympic champion Choi Min-jeong secured an automatic berth by winning an individual gold medal at the world championships last month, and only Kim and Noh earned the right to skate in individual events at the Olympics through the trials.
Lee So-yeon and Shim Suk-hee, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, earned spots for the relays in Italy after finishing third and fourth in the trials.
South Korea is the most successful short track country in Olympic history with 26 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals. (Yonhap)

Iconic Olympic balloon rises again in Paris
PARIS (AFP) — A giant balloon that became a popular landmark over the skies of Paris during the 2024 Olympics rose again Saturday evening, as Parisians celebrated an annual street music festival. As locals danced to live music in and around the Tuileries garden in central Paris, the balloon made its return on a hot summer evening. Organizers are hoping it will once again attract crowds of tourists. During the Games, the Olympic cauldron was tethered to the balloon, flying above the Tuileries garden at sunset every day. Thousands flocked to see the 7-meter-wide ring of electric fire. Last summer's version "had been thought up to last for the length of the Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Mathieu Lehanneur, the designer of the cauldron. After President Emmanuel Macron "decided to bring it back, all of the technical aspects needed to be reviewed," he told Agence France-Presse on Thursday. Lehanneur said he was "very moved" that the Olympic balloon was making a comeback. "The worst thing would have been for this memory to become a sitting relic that couldn't fly anymore," he said. The balloon's return on Saturday kicks off a daily appearance each evening until Sept. 14 — a summer staple every year until the 2028 Los Angeles Games. "For its revival, we needed to make sure it changed as little as possible and that everything that did change was not visible," said Lehanneur. With a decarbonated fire patented by French energy giant EDF, the upgraded balloon follows "the same technical principles" as its previous version, said director of innovation at EDF, Julien Villeret. The improved attraction "will last ten times longer" and be able to function for "300 days instead of 30," according to Villeret. The creators of the balloon also reinforced the light-and-mist system that "makes the flames dance," he said. Under the cauldron, a machine room hides cables, a compressor and a hydro-electric winch. That system will "hold back the helium balloon when it rises and pull it down during descent," said Jerome Giacomoni, president of the Aerophile group that constructed the balloon. "Filled with 6,200 cubic meters of helium that is lighter than air," the Olympic balloon "will be able to lift around 3 tons" of cauldron, cables and attached parts, he said. The Tuileries garden is where French inventor Jacques Charles took flight in his first gas balloon on Dec. 1, 1783. He followed in the footsteps of the famed Montgolfier brothers, who had just nine days earlier elsewhere in Paris, managed to launch a similar balloon into the sky with humans onboard. The website is to display the times when the modern-day balloon will rise and indicate any potential cancellations due to weather.

Ex-Olympic table tennis champion hopes to build a stronger sports culture to advance all levels of sports, from professionals to community sports While Korean music and businesses are making big waves internationally, now is the time for Korean sports to lead on the global stage and demonstrate how sports can be more than just a game, said the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee president during a session at the 7th Global Business Forum held in Seoul, Wednesday. The GBF, organized by The Korea Herald and Herald Business, is a 15-week program held every Wednesday that brings together business leaders, diplomats and industry experts to discuss emerging global trends and challenges shaping the future economy. During his lecture, Ryu Seung-min, the head of the KSOC, highlighted that the Korean sports world is at a key moment of influence thanks to the country's strong performance at the 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris last year. "(Last year's Olympics) was a defining moment that showed K-sports as a true global powerhouse. And as a former Olympic champion, I felt a sense of responsibility and wanted to help continue this success," said Ryu, 42, who won the men's table tennis at the 2004 Olympic Games. In Paris, the 16-year-old Ban Hyo-jin made headlines by winning the women's 10-meter air rifle gold medal. The fencing team achieved the valuable feat of winning two gold medals and one silver medal. South Korea exceeded its initial goal with 13 gold medals, tying its record for the most at a Summer Games, and finished eighth in the medal table. To make the leap, Ryu noted that Korea should take cues from the International Olympic Committee, which assists all National Olympic Committees with athlete development programs, as well as refugee athletes. "Korea should also follow the IOC model and build an independent, respected and athlete-centered sports organization that puts athletes and coaches first and creates a healthy environment to practice and play sports," Ryu explained. In his post-athletic career, Ryu served as a member of the IOC from 2016 to 2024 and president of the Korea Table Tennis Association from 2019 to 2024. Ryu also expressed hopes of building a stronger sports culture, calling for more interest and support to advance Korean sports at all levels: from professionals and community sports to the businesses and culture surrounding sports as well. As the evening progressed, Kim Young-sang, president of The Korea Herald, held a special interview session with marathoner Lee Bong-ju, who won the silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Lee, who ran long-distance before the sport reached today's popularity levels, said he was glad to see more people taking part in marathons. "Compared to 15 or 16 years ago, there are so many marathon competitions today. The enthusiasm is so high that it's difficult to even register for some of these races because they fill up quickly, and I am happy about the change," Lee said. "A Marathon is about having a goal and running toward achieving that goal. But do not overdo it. I hope that marathons can be something people simply enjoy, help people improve their health, strengthen their mental health and infuse positive energy into their daily lives," Lee noted.
