Jake Paul lays out surprising rules for bizarre Gervonta Davis showdown

Daily Mirror20-05-2025

Paul is set to make his return to the ring next month against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, but is still hoping to one day go head-to-head with 'Tank'
YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has claimed that he was on the brink of securing a bout with Gervonta Davis at 195lbs before negotiations fell through.
The two camps were ever so close to confirming a dust-up and were deep into negotiations in March over a potential showdown. Although they nearly reached an agreement, Davis first had to topple Lamont Roach. Fans widely expected 'Tank' to have an easy victory, but the fight ended unexpectedly in a draw.

The clash was not without its share of controversy, as some boxing fans felt Roach did enough to get his hand raised, especially after a knockdown claim in the ninth round was controversially dismissed. The lightweight contenders are now anticipated to go head-to-head once more on August 16.

As for the 'Problem Child', Paul is set to face ex-WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on June 28. Assuming both fighters emerge from their upcoming fights unharmed, the social media sensation is keen to revisit talks with 'Tank.' Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, Paul remarked: "That was on the one yard as well, but he has to rematch Lamont Roach.
"He wants to get that back. Then we will be back in discussions with Mr. Gervonta. But this is the nature of boxing, you have massive fights on the one-yard line and then they fall through." There is a huge weight gap between the pair - with Paul revealing it would be sanctioned as an exhibition bout.
The 28-year-old, primarily a cruiserweight fighter (200lbs), has offered to slim down to 195lbs for potential clash, while Davis is naturally a super lightweight (140lbs), and will have to bulk up as much as possible. Paul went on to claim the fight would be contested over 10 three-minute rounds with no restrictions on the rules.
"I never really thought tank was that good, it just took the right fighter to pick him apart to be honest," Paul added. "Someone who had high activity and wasn't afraid of his power. So, I always saw so many holes in his game, to me it wasn't that surprising that someone finally gave him some good work."
In the same interview, the young American didn't hesitate to criticise Canelo Alvarez, after a potential match-up fell through when Alvarez chose to sign with Riyadh Season instead of facing the 28-year-old. Paul has confidently claimed that he would have triumphed over the Mexican boxer if they had clashed in May, stating: "I would've beaten Canelo for sure.
"Even just watching him against Scull, he's just washed up, inactive, doesn't throw a lot of punches, not very strong. And what's crazy is one of my main sparring partners from the last two years was the one who lost to William Scull. He was the one that should've been fighting Canelo. His name's Shishkin, Vladimir Shishkin. He beat Scull way worse than Canelo did. This is the guy I'm sparring with every day for two-and-a-half years, going toe to toe with."

He appeared in every match for the Greenock side last campaign, scoring two goals and assisting six. The Scotland youth cap only made one very short cameo for the Gers' senior team back in 2023 against Hibs in a post-split league fixture. But he also had a fairly successful loan spell at Airdrieonians before arriving at Morton. He joins the Staggies on a two-year deal, and manager Don Cowie said: "Arron arrives at the club on the back of an excellent season at Greenock Morton where he was named as their Young Player of the Year. Bankrupt ex-Premier League star living at £2m mansion has 'no idea' about order

Bankrupt ex-Premier League star living at £2m mansion has 'no idea' about order Former Premier League footballer Lee Clark, who played for both Newcastle United and Sunderland, has been declared bankrupt over a debt to a business finance firm, according to court documents Former top-flight star Lee Clark has been declared bankrupt (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA, Getty Images ) Former Premier League footballer Lee Clark has been declared bankrupt due to a debt owed to a business finance firm. The 52-year-old, who played for Newcastle United, Sunderland and Fulham, claimed he was unaware of the bankruptcy order issued against him this week. The notice appeared in the London Gazette on behalf of petitioning creditor One Stop Business Finance in York. The verdict means all assets owned by the ex-midfield talent will be under the Insolvency Service's jurisdiction. ‌ Should Clark fail to settle the debt, his bank accounts, savings, and other significant possessions may be liquidated to settle the balance. Speaking to The Mirror, he said he was oblivious to the bankruptcy ruling while staying at his £2m Jesmond residence in Newcastle. ‌ Confronted about his bankruptcy, he said "I have no idea" before retreating back into his house. During another attempt to speak to him, he added: "I have no comment to make. I know nothing. Don't keep pressing the buzzer." Clark, 52, made more than 200 appearances across two spells with Newcastle and secured promotions to the Premier League with both Fulham and Sunderland. With more than 400 top-flight matches to his name, he also played for England's under-21 squad. He embarked on his professional journey at Newcastle and was an integral part of Kevin Keegan's 'Entertainers' throughout the 1990s. However, his transfer to Sunderland in 1997 for a conspicuously large sum of £2.5million caused quite a stir. Article continues below Clark had little to say about the bankruptcy order when confronted outside his home (Image: Andy Commins / Daily Mirror ) More controversy followed during his spell with the Black Cats, led by manager Peter Reid. And the most infamous stemmed from the former pro taking aim at his own fans. He was seen donning a T-shirt with an offensive slogan about 'Sad Mackem B******s' during the 1999 FA Cup final. Following that incident, he never played for the club again and transferred to Fulham before making a brief comeback at Newcastle. ‌ After hanging up his boots in 2006, Clark took on managerial roles at Huddersfield, Birmingham City and Blackpool, as well as coaching stints in Sudan and Oman. His son, Bobby, has been on the books at Liverpool and later moved to RB Salzburg. Clark enjoyed popularity and high regard as a player at Sunderland and was part of the squad that clinched promotion from the old Division One in the 1998/99 season, even captaining the side occasionally. He has also been active as a TV and radio pundit in recent years. Clark is a big advocate for football in the northeast (Image: Newcastle Chronicle ) Article continues below For all their past disputes, Clark doesn't hold any ill will towards Sunderland today. When asked by former Sunderland striker Ally McCoist on talkSPORT if he wished for Sunderland to triumph in the play-off final, he showed nothing but support. He asked: "Do you know what, Ally? I've said this all the time, and my pals will tell you this, whoever spoke to us, I want Sunderland in the Premier League. I want the derby games back. "I would love Middlesbrough in the Premier League. I want the North East clubs back. Let's get North East football back on the map."

Love Island fans convinced producers ‘deleted' scenes as feud explodes ‘out of nowhere'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOVE Island fans are convinced show bosses "deleted" scenes leading up to Toni Laites and Emily Moran's shock spat - giving the American a "villain edit." It came as US Islander Toni, 24, and Welsh beauty Emily, also 24, clashed in fiery scenes on Friday, with the former accusing her costar of being nosey on the ITV2 dating series. 6 Love Island fans are convinced show bosses have cut scenes of Toni and Emily's fiery spat Credit: Eroteme 6 Viewers reckon the US bombshell, 24, has been given a 'villain edit' Credit: Eroteme 6 Emily accused Toni of talking behind her back Credit: Eroteme Toni - who arrived as the first bombshell of the series - became annoyed after hearing a conversation between Emily and Conor Phillips, 25. The row then started after Emily accused Las Vegas pool cabana server Toni of talking behind her back. She was then warned by Meg that Toni had said she was being "nosey" and described her as "Little Miss Sunshine." Toni was also seen talking about Emily to Shakira, who agreed with Toni's views. Following their row, an exasperated Emily said she thought Toni was "just trying to cause a problem," and claimed: "She's f****g nuts." Yet after Toni had cemented herself as Love Island 2025 show favourite, fans were quick to smell a rat at her typically uncharacteristic conduct. One took to X to muse: "Toni is so calm and collected so she's peeped something crazy that Emily's done for her to act like that. PRODUCERS NEED TO SHOW US!" A second put: "I'm so confused where this random drama between Toni and Emily has come from?? I swear it's not been referenced at all before now." A third mused: "The cast is unhinged where the HELL did that come from with Toni and Shakira I was gobsmacked." One then added: "Toni's definitely saw something we haven't they're giving us the villain edit." Watch the moment Love Island feud explodes as Toni slams horrified rival in sweary rant Another noted: "Toni's crash out is valid because the producers have edited something we haven't seen, so I still support her!" One then concluded: "Feel like Toni's beef with Emily is so unprovoked???" BULLY BEHAVIOUR? Even though Toni's fans were out in full force, other viewers watching at home accused the Islanders of bullying due to previous instances of her gossiping about Emily without her knowledge. "Toni wanted to be the IT girl so bad and is now just trying anything to stay relevant causing problems when Emily hasn't done anything wrong, when actually she just looks like a bully," wrote one Love Island fan on X, formerly Twitter. Another added: "You all love Toni but last year you all hated Jess saying she was a bully?!?!?!" A third wrote: "Toni is like a school ground bully, poor Emily her and Shakira are 2 b*****s." ROUGH PATCH It comes amid a tricky time for Toni, who caused hysterics with a wardrobe malfunction earlier in the week. Toni hasn't had the easiest ride in the villa overall, and on Wednesday night she was almost dumped from the villa New islander Harrison was faced with choosing between Toni and Malisha, after they both found themselves single in the latest recoupling. They both then went on a date with Harrison, before he chose Toni, meaning Malisha went home. 6 The pair's behaviour was seen as 'unprovoked' Credit: Eroteme 6 Their cat fight stunned the villa Credit: Eroteme
