DNA profiling to verify origin of tusks seized from five persons near Valparai
The Forest Department has collected samples from the remains of an elephant from Valparai forest range limits for a DNA profiling, to verify the origin of a pair of tusks that was seized from five persons, including two frontline staff of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), on Saturday (June 21, 2025).
Devendra Kumar Meena, Deputy Director of Pollachi Division of ATR, told The Hindu that the Department traced the skeletal remains of an elephant to a dense forest area at Kavarkal in Valparai range, based on the confessions of the accused.
As per their statement, they collected the tusks from a dead elephant from a forest area at Kavarkal a year ago. The accused claimed that the carcass was around one-year-old when the tusks were collected.
'We collected all the remains of the elephant that were found at the place and assembled them. The entire remains and the area were carefully examined. Samples were collected from the remains for a DNA profiling to check whether the tusks seized from the accused indeed belonged to the elephant, remains of which were found at Kavarkal,' said Mr. Meena.
P. Manikandan, 47, P. Raja, 39, and D. Devabala, 31, from Thaimudi estate near Valparai, forest watcher D. Premdass, 29, and Anti-Poaching Watcher (APW) V. Raman, 35, attached to Valparai range were arrested with the pair of tusks on Saturday. They were arrested by a team from the Manambolly forest range near Valparai, based on specific information. The accused were remanded in judicial custody at the Pollachi sub-jail.
Premdass had served as an APW with the Department for several years and he was appointed as a regular staffer of the rank of forest watcher in April this year. Raman has worked as an APW, which is a temporary post, for around 10 years.
Following the arrest , the Department removed Raman from his temporary post. It placed Premdass under suspension as a disciplinary action. Further action against him would be initiated after an investigation, Mr. Meena said.
'We will also seek the custody of the accused for further investigation in the case,' he added.

Beyond targeting major traffickers, the police are also addressing consumption. "Cases against addicts are less robust than those for peddling, but we're now applying anti-narcotics laws to deter usage," he added. Operation Thunder extends beyond enforcement, integrating community involvement to tackle the root causes of drug abuse. Maknikar pointed to societal pressures driving youth toward narcotics, such as peer influence, family neglect, and the glamorisation of hedonism in media. "The pub and bar culture, prevalent in Maharashtra's urban centres, is infiltrating rural areas and tribal settlements," he noted. "We're cracking down on hookah parlours, which often serve as entry points to drug use." The campaign underscores collective responsibility, calling on public servants, social reformers, and citizens to contribute. Aircraft tail snag briefly halts crash site clean-up
Ahmedabad: During the clearance of the Air India Flight 171 crash site in Ahmedabad on Sunday, the aircraft's tail section got lodged in a tree near the Anti-Corruption Bureau office (ACB) in Shahibaug Dafnala. The tail was part of the wreckage being transported in a truck to the airport for further examination as part of an ongoing probe, said V N Yadav, ACP, G Division. Police authorities blocked the road from Shahibaug Dafnala to Camp Hanuman Mandir to allow emergency teams to intervene. Shortly after, police personnel, along with a few locals, arrived at the scene and extricated the tail by trimming a few branches. The truck later resumed its journey, and the road was reopened for traffic. Commuters were not inconvenienced for long as the entire operation was conducted swiftly. No injuries or damage to property were reported. The wreckage will be kept in a hangar for investigation, which is being conducted by multiple national and international agencies. Raipur, Jun 22 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah virtually inaugurated the temporary campus of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) and I-Hub Raipur in Nava Raipur on Sunday. Shah said that this marks a historic day for Chhattisgarh in the direction of modernising and scientifying the criminal justice system. The NFSU temporary campus and I-Hub will be developed at a cost of Rs 268 crores. The campus will offer BSc, MSc in Forensic Science, Cyber Security, Psychology, Digital Forensic, and professional diploma courses from the academic session 2025-26. Shah highlighted that these institutions will not only empower Chhattisgarh but also the entire central India with modern justice and crime investigation capabilities.
