Etihad Esco completes key energy savings performance contract

Etihad Energy Services Company (Etihad Esco), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), has announced the completion of Dubai's first energy savings performance contract (ESPC) with proven results.
Launched in 2015, the retrofit project, which involved several buildings, was successfully concluded in 2024. It marks a significant milestone in Dubai's transformation into a smart, green city, offering an innovative model for enhancing energy efficiency in buildings and facilities.
The retrofit project further establishes global benchmarks, demonstrating the potential to significantly reduce operational costs through improved operations, in line with the Dubai Demand Side Management Strategy 2050, said a statement from Dewa.
The pioneering project included a comprehensive retrofit of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, water and building insulation systems at Dewa's facilities, including its headquarters and Dewa buildings in Al Hudaiba, Umm Ramool, Al Wasl and Burj Nahar, as well as the administrative buildings at the G and L stations.
Dewa's headquarters also underwent a comprehensive retrofit of the chilled water system, including the installation of advanced chillers with a magnetic bearing system.
These improvements enhance infrastructure, promote operational excellence and support energy consumption reduction and environmental conservation.
Over six years, the project achieved savings of approximately 35.2 gigawatt hours of electricity and 2.8 million imperial gallons of water, while reducing nearly 14,452 tonnes of CO2 emissions, it stated.
Dr Waleed Alnuaimi, the CEO of Etihad Esco, said this project highlights the depth of the partnership between the two organisations in driving sustainability.
"We are proud of our active role in making Dubai one of the most sustainable cities globally, through pioneering projects that promote energy efficiency and generate long-term financial and environmental savings," he stated.

Dubai Airports to launch final phase of lighting retrofit project

Dubai Airports has signed an agreement with Etihad Energy Services Company (Etihad Esco) to launch the final phase of its airport-wide lighting retrofit project, a key milestone in its ongoing sustainability agenda and a major step towards energy-efficient operations at both of Dubai's airports. Etihad Esco is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa). This newly signed phase will see over 180,000 conventional lighting fixtures replaced with energy-saving alternatives across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC), with Concourse A at DXB being the largest single area covered. Combined with the first phase completed earlier and covering 150,000 lighting units at DXB, the project will upgrade more than 330,000 lighting units in total, making it one of the most extensive airport lighting retrofit initiatives in the region, said the statement from Dubai Airports. The project is expected to cut annual energy consumption by 47 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), equivalent to powering over 4,300 homes for an entire year, a significant result that highlights the real-world impact of operational sustainability. The initiative will also deliver annual cost savings of more than AED20 million, contributing to Dubai Airports' efforts to optimise efficiency while supporting Dubai's wider environmental targets. On the strategic deal, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa, said: "Aligned with the UAE's commitment to climate change resilience and sustainable growth, we are dedicated to supporting Dubai's journey towards a green economy." DEWA opens registration for WETEX

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has started to receive applications for participation in the 27th edition of the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX). The exhibition will take place from 30th September to 2nd October 2025 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, said a Wam news agency report. WETEX is the region's largest trade fair, spanning key sectors such as energy, water, green development, sustainability, green mobility, and smart and sustainable cities, alongside other related industries. It is also one of the world's largest specialised exhibitions of its kind. The 26th edition of WETEX, held in 2024, saw the participation of more than 2,800 exhibitors from 65 countries and attracted 50,598 visitors from around the globe.
