"No Option Left": Rajasthan Couple Dies By Suicide Over Online Gaming Debt

A couple in Rajasthan allegedly died by suicide amid uncertainty over paying back losses incurred in online gaming.
Kota resident Deepak Rathore, who used to play online games on his mobile phone, had told his sister a day before he and his wife Rajesh Rathore died by suicide that he was under a debt of Rs 4 to 5 lakh. "I have no option left except to die," he had told his elder sister.
Deepak Rathore's sister had asked him to not take any drastic steps and assured him that money will be arranged to pay back the debt. Despite the advice, the couple died by hanging from the fan in their room.
Their bodies were found when Deepak Rathore's father Satyanarayan Rathore knocked on the door but received no response. A few minutes later, the couple's five-year-old daughter opened the room's door from inside.
While online gaming debt is being considered the reason behind the couple's suicide, all aspects of the incident are being probed, Kota Rural Superintendent of Police Sujeet Shankar said.
The couple got married six years ago.
Last month, the Supreme Court had agreed to examine a plea seeking a complete ban on "illegal" betting apps. The petition also sought strict regulations on online gaming and fantasy sports, and the enactment of a comprehensive law. The top court issued a notice to the Centre and sought its response, but refrained from issuing notices to the state governments at the present stage.

Cops have advised investors to verify trading companies' credentials through SEBI's official channels before making substantial investments. "Licensed trading firms cannot impose arbitrary service tax on withdrawals," an official said. Cops have registered a case and the cyber cell is tracking the digital trail of the transferred funds.

Couple killed in Hazaribag as portion of roof collapses
1 2 3 Hazaribag: A couple was killed after a part of the roof of their house collapsed at Rasoidhamna village under Barhi police station limits here on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. Johan Tudu, Barhi sub-divisional officer, said the deceased were identified as Hadis Ansari (52) and his wife Zamira Khatun (48). Zamira was also a ward member of the Rasoidhamna panchayat. "They were sleeping in their room when the roof of their thatched house collapsed, killing them on the spot," he said. While the SDO said there was no rain during the time of the collapse, recent heavy downpour might have led to the roof's collapse. Other members of the family, who were sleeping in separate rooms, were unharmed. "Relief and rescue operations have started, and compensation will be provided as per govt rule. The debris is being cleared by the rescue team," Tudu said. The district administration will now survey old houses to take corrective measure to prevent such incidents, officials said. The couple had five children. While one of the girls was married off, the remaining children are minors. "We have paid an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 to the next of the kin for their last rites. A sum of Rs 4 lakh in compensation will be given to the kin from the state disaster management coffers after documentation process is over." The administration has also provided 50kg ration so that the deceased couple's children do not starve.

SC notice to states on plea of Wazahat Khan, complainant against influencer Sharmistha Panoli
New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to Centre and certain states on a plea filed by Wazahat Khan, the man whose complaint led to the arrest of influencer Sharmistha Panoli, seeking clubbing of FIRs lodged against him across multiple states for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through his social media posts. A vacation bench of Justices KV Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh issued notices to the government of Assam, West Bengal, Delhi and Haryana and posted the matter for hearing on July 14. 'These hate speeches lead us nowhere,' said Justice Viswanathan to Khan's counsel. On request of Khan's counsel, the bench further ordered that as an interim measure till the next hearing date, no coercive action shall be taken against him for the FIRs registered or may be registered, which are similar. The bench noted that Khan was arrested in two cases registered in West Bengal and was in police custody in the FIR registered by the Golf Link Police Station, Kolkata, and was remanded to judicial custody in the other Bengal FIR. Justice Viswanathan invoked a saying that wounds inflicted by fire may heal, but not the wounds inflicted by the tongue. During the hearing, Khan's lawyer said that cases have been registered against him nationwide in retaliation for his complaint against the social media influencer Panoli. Khan is 'reaping as he has sown' but he has apologised for the tweet, after having 'learnt the lesson the hard way', said the counsel. Khan, whose complaint led to influencer Sharmistha Panoli's arrest on May 30, was himself arrested on June 9 in Kolkata's Amherst Street area. Multiple FIRs were filed against Khan, including one in Assam, for 'allegedly spreading hatred on social media and hurting religious sentiments,' according to Kolkata Police officials. Panoli had posted a video on social media and allegedly made communal comments after Operation Sindoor, after the Pahalgam attack, which left at least 26 people dead in Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)
