Hakim could get Moto3 wild card ride

KUALA LUMPUR: Rider Hakim Danish Ramli could get a wild card to race in Moto3 this season at the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia on Oct 24-26.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh had said that the 17-year-old has the opportunity to benefit from the National Sports Trust Fund (KWASN) if he shines in two championships this season.
The Terengganu-born rider currently leads the Red Bull Rookies series after securing runner-up finishes in both race one and race two at the curtain raiser in the Jerez Circuit, last week.
Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said they still have plenty of time to get Hakim the wild card.
"Hakim is leading the championship at the moment, we will try to get him the slot.
"It's a good start for him but still too early to tell.
"He has to be consistent throughout the whole year," said Azhan Shafriman at the Malaysia Touring Car Championships (MTCC) press conference in Sepang.
"The rule of thumb is that we can announce the wild card slot 45 days before the race date itself.
"We have been in discussion with Dorna Sports (MotoGP rights holders) and ZK Racing (Hakim Danish's team).
Meanwhile Azhan said the MTCC, which will be held this weekend, will see a total of 82 cars on the track, with the F4 Southeast Asia Championship returning to the grid, alongside the Asia Classic Car Challenge/Caterham.
In addition, the Porsche Sprint Challenge Indonesia is making its debut as the Companion Series.
"MTCC is more than a name change, it represents a purposeful evolution of the Championship.
"We have redefined the Championship with clearer classes, updated technical regulations, and a stronger focus on turbocharged cars to keep up with global motorsport trends.
"With 53 entries already confirmed for Round 1, we are off to a strong start," he said.

Wilder sacked by Sheffield United after play-off failure

London: Chris Wilder was sacked as Sheffield United manager yesterday after the club's failure to win promotion to the Premier League. Wilder paid the price for United's agonising Championship play-off final loss against Sunderland last season. United finished third in the Championship and beat Bristol City in the play-off semi-finals before blowing the lead in a 2-1 defeat by Sunderland, who scored a stoppage-time winner through Tommy Watson at Wembley. Wilder leaves Bramall Lane for the second time after a previous succesful spell in charge of his boyhood team ended in 2021. The 57-year-old, who led the Blades into the Premier League in 2019, returned in December 2023 after Paul Heckingbottom was sacked with the club bottom of the top flight. "A Blade through and through, the legacy Chris and his staff have created here will never be forgotten, going right back to 2016 when he initially took the job with the club rooted in League One," a club statement said. United's play-off final loss was a massive blow after they had been heavily involved in the race for automatic promotion. Leeds and Burnley took the automatic promotion places after United won just two of their final seven regular-season games. American-based consortium COH Sports, who completed a takeover in December last year, had handed Wilder a new contract until the end of the 2027-28 season in January.

Wilder had signed a contract extension until 2028 with the Blades earlier this year but after finishing third in the Championship, they failed to win the playoff final, losing 2-1 to Sunderland, who scored the winner deep into stoppage time. "Sheffield United can confirm a mutually agreed decision has been reached for manager Chris Wilder to leave the football club," the club said in a statement. "After returning to the club during a difficult period in 2023, he has provided stability and created a new team which earned a Steel City derby double amongst other notable highlights last season. "Showing his calibre as a manager, he guided the club to third place finish... before a heartbreaking conclusion in the playoff final." It marks the second time Wilder has left the club after his first spell in charge ended in March 2021 when they were rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, with the club eventually going down.
