Born not just in the lab but in the heart of a grieving son, Kamala — the world's first genome-edited rice variety — is both a scientific triumph and a tribute. Dr Satendra Kumar Mangrauthia, the principal scientist at the Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR), Rajendranagar, and his team developed DRR Dhan 100 — popularly known as Kamala — entirely in India using cutting-edge genome editing. Kamala promises higher yields, stronger stems and sustainability — all without foreign DNA. As India joins the US and Japan in this breakthrough, Dr Mangrauthia, in a conversation with TNIE's Adeena A, discusses the significance of this innovation and its potential to transform Indian agriculture.

What makes Kamala unique?
DRR Dhan 100, or Kamala, is the first rice variety in the world developed using genome-editing technology. This cutting-edge method allows for precise crop improvement, making Kamala a milestone in rice breeding. While the US and Japan have commercialised genome-edited crops, India has become the third country to apply this technology specifically to rice.
Why the name 'Kamala'?
Kamala is named in memory of my late mother. Losing her was one of the most painful moments of my life, and since then, I've dedicated all my work to her. Naming this variety Kamala is a heartfelt tribute to her love and support.

The lab is equipped with various robotic models, including quadrupeds, providing practical exposure to students and officers from the armed forces studying at Military Institute of Technology (MILIT). The primary goal of this facility is to foster collaboration in research and enhance the application of robotics in modern warfare and defence operations. "As robotics and drone technology evolve rapidly on a global scale, it is essential to study these subjects in depth. Therefore, providing advanced practical exposure is crucial in this field of study. This lab will achieve these objectives," RK Satpathy, Director of the School of Robotics, told TOI. He said that the dedicated lab was established on campus to facilitate collaboration between MTech students and armed forces officers at MILIT. Students from this institute often join DRDO labs as scientists. "We received several functional robotic models from Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) lab in Dighi. Our students worked in that lab to enhance their understanding of robotics and associated technologies," said officials. As military operational requirements are extremely dynamic and demanding, it is necessary to know the 'problem statements' of the forces. "Then only researchers can work on niche technologies to achieve the operational requirements of the forces," said armed forces officers who worked in robotics systems. "The use of robotics in actual field operations is at a very primitive stage in the Indian armed forces. Therefore, it has become necessary for the forces to do adequate research to achieve global standards in this field. Such laboratories would certainly make a positive difference in the future," a senior officer from MILIT said.

Chennai: Bird enthusiasts in the city reported an early sighting of marsh sandpipers at Kovalam Creek, weeks before their usual Aug arrival. The area also hosted at least 300 greater flamingos, generating interest among the local birding community. Kovalam Creek holds significance as the only site where greater flamingos were recorded by birders in the past six years, they said. The Nature Trust founder, K V R K Thirunaranan, said flamingos are not typically seen in June. "This period usually brings pelicans, painted storks, egrets, and resident species such as Indian spot-billed ducks, cormorants, and grey herons. Marsh sandpipers are an unexpected element this year," he said. Some birders said these sandpipers are non-breeding birds that have not migrated to northern latitudes and may have remained in the creek. "That is a possibility. It can be established only after a detailed observation and study," Thirunaranan said. He said ample food sources and a reduction in poaching could be contributing to the birds' continued presence. Additionally, around 50 red-rumped swallows were seen at Pallikaranai marshland — a substantial increase from the usual single-digit counts. "This is quite an unusual pattern for this time of the year," he said, suggesting the early and higher numbers could be related to shifts in weather or habitat.

This mega academic gathering aims to project Indian knowledge systems as an alternative and complementary framework in global academia," said an official. It will provide an international platform for research presentations and discussions aimed at building a collective scientific community. The event will also aim to establish a global network to promote Indian knowledge systems within the global academic and research communities. The official added, "Through this platform, efforts will be made to connect Indian knowledge traditions with contemporary global scientific paradigms and challenges". The conference will highlight fields such as engineering sciences and natural sciences, demonstrating how Indian knowledge systems provide unique insights into humanity, nature, and the pursuit of knowledge.
