Work on new multi-storey car park in Old Town Ipoh to begin in May
IPOH: Construction of the RM15mil multi-storey parking and commercial complex at Jalan Panglima is set to begin in May, with completion expected within 15 months.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that this initiative by the Ipoh City Council will be executed through a Private Financing Initiative (PFI) model by the private sector.
"This long-awaited project is expected to significantly ease the parking woes faced by the people in the Old Town area for the last 20 years," Nga stated during the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday (April 25).
Originally announced by Nga in January 2023, the complex will be located at the existing parking area behind the Han Chin Pet Soo (Han Chin Villa) building.
The design of the complex features colonial architecture to complement the historical buildings in the area. The Kepayang assemblyman mentioned that the complex would add 353 parking bays to the existing 378, bringing the total to over 700.
"The complex will consist of five floors, with 12 shop units planned to house a creative cultural gallery, local souvenir shops, cafes, and various food outlets, as well as an alfresco rooftop area, which is anticipated to be an 'instagrammable' spot," he added.
"This project will boost tourism in the Old Town area in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, injecting new life into this heritage town," Nga said.
Other features of the complex will include attractive LED lighting, solar panels, and electric vehicle charging points.
"This will make it one of the most beautiful car parks in Perak, especially at night," he said.
Additionally, the complex will offer disabled-friendly parking spaces, lifts, and toilets, along with other public facilities such as suraus and public toilets.

Electric Train Service set to boost Johor tourism
JOHOR BARU: The Electric Train Service (ETS) that is expected to be fully completed by August will significantly boost the tourism industry here, says Tourism Malaysia. Deputy Director General (Promotion) Datuk Musa Yusof said the timing of the ETS completion aligns well with preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026. "The ETS will connect Johor Baru directly to Kuala Lumpur, which will strengthen the industry, especially in terms of tourist movement. "It will allow visitors to travel between these two places in about three and a half hours, enabling them to visit more locations. "If they stay the night for cultural events such as this, it will also help increase hotel occupancy rates," he said. He added that the spillover effects of the ETS, which has reached Segamat since March, are already visible. "We can already see Segamat benefiting from this, especially during the durian season," he said at a press conference after officiating a Gawai and Kaamatan Festival celebration at a hotel here. In March, Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that two sets of ETS trains from China were expected to arrive in April and would be operational by August after undergoing necessary trials. He mentioned that the trains, along with another eight sets, are being assembled in Batu Gajah, Perak, and will complete the southern route of the line, following the start of the ETS service at Segamat station in Johor on 15 March. 'We don't have to wait for all 10 sets to start operating; we will use whichever set is completed. "For Gemas to Johor Baru, there will be three phases - Phase 1 to Segamat, Phase 2 to Kluang, and Phase 3 to JB Sentral,' he said after travelling on the ETS from KL Sentral to Segamat station in March.

GEORGE TOWN, June 21 — A total of 4.8 million out of 5.4 million recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid have used their MyKad to purchase basic necessities at registered premises nationwide as of this month. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said Perlis recorded the highest usage rate at 94 per cent, followed by 93 per cent in Sabah and Kedah, while Penang recorded 88 per cent. She said the figures reflect the growing effectiveness of the initiative, supported by various awareness and promotional efforts at both federal and state levels. 'The ministry will continue to strengthen awareness campaigns to ensure more people benefit from this government aid, which is aimed at easing their financial burden. 'We have also significantly expanded the number of recipients from 700,000 to 5.4 million since April,' she told reporters during a SARA outreach programme at a hypermarket here today. At the event, Lim met with 100 SARA recipients in Penang as part of the ministry's effort to engage directly with urban communities. She said to date, 3,700 retail premises have registered under the programme nationwide, enabling recipients to shop closer to home. In Penang alone, 190 such premises are available. Lim added that starting May 1, the programme was enhanced by expanding the list of eligible items to 14 categories, including household and personal hygiene products, medicines, and school supplies like uniforms and shoes. She also said that the maximum SARA aid for 2025 has been raised to RM2,100 from RM1,200, a 75 per cent increase. In total, the combined allocation for the SARA and Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) programmes has been raised to RM13 billion this year, marking the highest cash aid provision in the country's history. — Bernama
