A senior Jammu and Kashmir government official and two security officers were among seven killed while more than 25 people were injured amid intense mortar shelling and drone strikes by Pakistan in the Jammu region on Saturday, officials said.
The casualties were reported hours before India and Pakistan agreed to end hostilities, which soared after the Indian Armed Forces hit terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) earlier this week in response to the Pahalgam attack.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the affected residential localities and announced a Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia for the next of kin of each person killed in the cross-border shelling while police issued helpline numbers and asked people to stay away from debris of fallen UAVs.
Residents of Jammu city and other major towns of the division woke up to air raid sirens and deafening sounds of explosions around 5 am while border residents spent a sleepless night amid intense cross-border shelling.
Defence officials said Pakistan's escalation with drone strikes and other munitions continued along the western borders on Saturday.
'Pakistan's blatant attempt to violate India's sovereignty and endanger civilians is unacceptable. The Indian Army will thwart all enemy designs," they said.
Additional District Development Commissioner (Rajouri) Raj Kumar Thapa and his two staff members were seriously injured when an artillery shell hit his official residence in Rajouri town, the officials said.
They were rushed to the Government Medical College where Thapa succumbed, they said.
Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, a native of Himachal Pradesh, laid down his life when a Pakistani artillery shell exploded near his post in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch, the officials said.
A senior Border Security Force (BSF) officer said sub-inspector Mohammed Imteyaz made the supreme sacrifice during cross-border firing while gallantly leading from the front along the International Border in the R S Pura sector.
He, along with seven others, were injured in the cross-border firing initiated by Pakistan. While Imteyaz succumbed to his injuries, the other personnel were admitted to a hospital, the officer said.
Two more persons — two-year-old Aisha Noor and Mohd Shohib (35) — were killed and three injured in shelling near an industrial area in Rajouri town, the officials said.
According to the officials, 55-year-old Rashida Bi lost her life when a mortar shell hit her house at Kanghra-Galhutta village in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district.
Three more people were injured in intense shelling in Poonch and were evacuated to a hospital, they said, adding that a local journalist was injured in the Nowshera sector of Rajouri.
Zakir Hussain (45) was killed and two others, including a girl, were injured in shelling in the Kheri Keran village of Bantalab in the outskirts of Jammu, the officials said.
Four people were injured when artillery shells and suspected drones hit some residential areas in Jammu, including Rehari and Roop Nagar in Jammu city.
'On May 9, from about 2100 hrs, Pakistan opened fire on BSF posts in the Jammu sector without any provocation. The BSF is responding in commensurate manner causing widespread damage to posts and assets of Pakistan Rangers along the International Border. Our resolve to protect India's sovereignty is unshaken," the force's Jammu unit said in a post on X.
Majority of the shops in Jammu city and the shelling-hit areas remained closed due to the tense situation during the day but opened later after the announcement of the ceasefire.
The debris of Pakistani kamikaze drones, intercepted and destroyed midair by the Indian Army's air defence network, were also found lying in open fields at several places, including Bishnah and Parmandal in Jammu, drawing a large number of people before the police rushed to the scene and confiscated the material.
Taking note of the incident, the police issued helpline numbers for the public and advised them not to touch or move around any suspicious material or fallen UAV.
The police also denied reports about the presence of terrorists in R S Pura, advising people to remain alert and report any suspicious movement to the nearest police post or station.
Tensions between India and Pakistan soared significantly after the Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday conducted precision strikes targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan and PoK in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that had cross-border linkages. Twenty-six people, mostly tourists, were killed in the attack.

However, hours after the two countries reached an understanding on stopping military actions, New Delhi accused Islamabad of breaching it.
In a late night media briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with 'seriousness and responsibility".

Sebi fines IAGF, trustee and managers ₹29 lakh for AIF rule breaches

Capital markets regulator Sebi has imposed penalties totalling Rs 29 lakh on six entities, including India Asset Growth Fund, its manager Essel Finance Advisors and Managers, and trustee Vistra ITCL (India) for multiple violations of AIF rules. The regulator levied a fine of Rs 11 lakh on IAGF, Rs 10 lakh on Arpan Sarkar and Jaykishan Kikani (jointly and severally), Rs 6 lakh on Vistra ITCL (India), and Rs 2 lakh on Essel Finance Advisors and Managers (EFAM), its Chief Executive Officer Vishnu Prakash Rathore (jointly and severally). The regulator, in a 39-page order, found the entities guilty of serious lapses in regulatory compliance during the inspection period from April 2021 to March 2022, Sebi said in the order on Friday. The markets watchdog observed that India Asset Growth Fund (IAGF) failed to disclose disciplinary actions and litigation history of its sponsor, manager, trustee, and key officials in its placement memorandum (PPM), as mandated under the norms. Later, the fund submitted a revised PPM containing such disclosures during a change of control application, which was neither approved nor circulated to investors, resulting in a breach of the disclosure framework of the code of conduct of the alternative investment fund (AIF) regulations. Sebi also pulled up the fund for providing valuations based on underlying assets instead of the securities it held, as well as for delayed registration with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND), non-disclosure of the investor charter and distribution waterfall, and a 10-day delay in filing its PPM audit report. The regulator found that the fund took over a month to respond to an investor grievance, breaching the 30-day deadline. It noted that although the fund eventually completed the winding-up process and distributed proceeds to all investors by January 2024, the regulatory breaches were material. The regulator concluded that the violations had the potential to mislead investors, and disrupt regulatory oversight of AIFs. Sebi highlighted that EFAM being manager of IAGF is responsible for such non-compliances. It noted that Rathore, Sarkar and Kikani were the key managerial personnel who failed to abide by the code of conduct as per the rules. Therefore, the allegations against them stand established.

2 judo coaches sent to prison for sexual assault on minor trainees, including national-level judoka

Meerut/Bareilly: Courts in Meerut and Moradabad sentenced two judo coaches to prison for sexually assaulting minor trainees, including a national-level judoka, in separate incidents that took place in 2017 and 2023. Manish alias Max, 26, received a life sentence for raping a 10-year-old national judo player in Meerut, special public prosecutor Kuldeep Mohan said. The additional district judge Sangeeta, who goes by her first name, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. Special public prosecutor Avkash Jain told TOI, "The convict violated the girl in the guard room while her brother and fellow players were asked to practise. After the crime, the minor bled profusely, and Max, in a cynical attempt to conceal his crime, staged a drama; he told the minor's parents that she sustained a severe injury during practice." He added, "Believing the convict's theory, the minor was rushed to a medical facility and underwent treatment in three different hospitals, and after eight days, she secretly wrote her ordeal on a paper, which somehow reached her father. Upon this, an FIR was lodged at Kankar Khera police station under relevant sections of IPC and Pocso Act in June 2023." Additional district govt counsel Manoj Gupta said, "The incident occurred on Sept 9, 2017, when the boy was in his school where the convict was appointed as judo coach. Mohd Qasim took the boy to the forest on the pretext of judo training, where he forcefully sodomised him. The boy narrated his ordeal to his family about the incident upon returning home. Subsequently, an FIR against the convict was registered at Katghar police station under the sections of sodomy and the Pocso Act. " He added, "The submitted medical examination report to the court confirmed the assault. Additionally, the statement of the survivor and the circumstantial evidence helped in nailing the accused." The chargesheet was submitted in court, and the judge expedited the trial. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court found Ali guilty and ordered his immediate custody.

Army jawan, accomplice arrested for leaking info to ISI

In a major counter-espionage operation, Amritsar Rural Police has arrested an Indian Army jawan and his aide suspected of espionage activities linked to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The arrested accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopy Foji, a resident of Dhariwal in Amritsar— presently, serving in the Indian Army and posted in Jammu; and his associate Sahil Masih, alias Shali, a resident of Dhariwal in Amritsar. DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that preliminary investigation revealed that Gurpreet was in direct contact with operatives of the Pakistan ISI and is suspected of sharing sensitive and confidential information via pen drives. The key ISI handler involved in the case has been identified as Rana Javed, he added. The DGP said that two mobile phones containing virtual numbers, reportedly used to communicate with ISI operatives, have been recovered from the possession of both the accused. Further investigations are underway to dismantle the broader espionage-terror network and identify all collaborators in this case, he said. Sharing more details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Maninder Singh said that accused Gurpreet was recruited into the Army in 2016 and systematically exploited his official position to collect, store, and transmit classified military information via pen drives and discs. The espionage network was reportedly facilitated by an acquaintance identified as Arjan, a Dubai-based drug trafficker from Dhariwal, who introduced Gurpreet to ISI operatives five months ago, he said, while adding that since then, Gurpreet has actively engaged in the unauthorised collection and relay of sensitive military data to the ISI using pre-decided drop locations. The SSP said that in lieu of this espionage activity, Gurpreet was receiving monetary compensation through a complex financial network involving intermediary bank accounts of friends, relatives, and foreign associates to evade detection. In an intelligence-led operation, police teams have arrested Gurpreet and his associate Sahil, while they were attempting another handover of sensitive data, he said. The official said that further investigations are in progress to unravel the wider nexus and identify additional conspirators, both domestic and foreign-based. A case has been registered under sections 3, 5, and 9 of the Official Secrets Act and section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Lopoke police station in Amritsar Rural.
