The Calgary Fire Department is investigating after a two-alarm fire started in the partially demolished River Run complex. The 23 townhomes, in four separate buildings, were being demolished as part of the Green Line LRT project when the fire started.

Northwest Calgary house fire considered suspicious, officials say
The Calgary Fire Department says a blaze in a house on Home Road N.W. on June 15, 2025, is suspicious in nature. Calgary fire officials say a small blaze at a home in Montgomery may have been deliberately set. Firefighters were called to a scene on Home Road N.W. at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday. Officials say smoke was coming from the basement of a home that had been boarded up. Crews extinguished a small fire and rescued a dog that was trapped inside. There were no injuries.

Northwest elementary school and southeast McDonald's evacuated due to Friday morning fires
Investigations are underway into what caused a pair of minor fires Friday morning at a northwest Calgary elementary school and a southeast Calgary McDonald's. At at 9:50 a.m. fire crews responded to reports of a fire in a classroom at Sunnyside School, on the 200 block of 7 Street N.W. A Calgary Fire Department spokesperson said the school was quickly evacuated and the blaze put out with a fire extinguisher. No injuries were reported. There was no structural damage to the building, but some smoke damage to the classroom. At 10:30 a.m., crews were dispatched to the McDonald's on the 5000 block of 130 Ave. S.E. The fire was called in by the alarm company as soon as smoke detectors activated because of a small fire in the fryer. Everyone was evacuated. There were no reports of injuries.

Calgary police search for driver involved in hit and run that injured firefighter
Calgary police are asking for the public's help in identifying a person responsible for driving a vehicle that was involved in a hit and run that injured a Calgary firefighter last month. The incident took place around 11:50 a.m. on May 23 as the vehicle, which investigators identified as a stolen 2017 blue Ford Fusion, was travelling westbound on Second Avenue northeast at a high rate of speed. An on-duty member of the Calgary Fire Department, who was outside conducting a building inspection in the 400 block of Second Avenue, was struck by the vehicle. The firefighter was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while the driver, who was wearing a black hoodie and black pants, fled the scene on foot in a southbound direction. Story continues below advertisement Police recovered the Ford Fusion, which they determined was stolen earlier that morning from the southwest community of Silverado. After exhausting all leads, investigators have released a photo of a similar vehicle in hopes of generating new tips from the public. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, or may have CCTV of dashcam footage from the area at the time, to contact them 403-266-1234.
