
Veeam launches Kasten v8 to unify VM & Kubernetes protection
Veeam has announced the launch of Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes v8, aimed at unifying virtual machine and container data protection for enterprises.
This latest release introduces enhancements that allow organisations to manage both traditional virtual machines (VMs) and modern Kubernetes applications through a single platform. The new version also integrates with Veeam Vault, offering a fully managed offsite backup solution, and is intended to improve operational efficiency by consolidating data management under Veeam's suite of tools.

Kasten v8 arrives with several new features targeted at enterprise customers. Among those is the ability to unify data resilience for VMs on Kubernetes alongside containerised applications, aiming to streamline operations and increase efficiency.
The file-level recovery (FLR) function for KubeVirt VMs facilitates granular restores, allowing recovery of individual files from backups without recreating whole VM clones. This is designed to support enterprises using solutions such as Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation.
The release also introduces a virtual machine dashboard intended to provide a workload-centric perspective, helping teams identify each VM's dependencies within Kubernetes clusters and configure backup consistency more easily.
Veeam is extending freedom of choice to organisations through enhanced multi-CPU architecture support, which enables use of ARM and IBM Power to optimise costs. The company has also broadened support for the NetApp Trident storage provisioner and introduced backup capabilities for ONTAP NAS "Economy" volumes.
These features allow for more flexibility in how companies back up data across different storage systems.
Security measures have been expanded with this version. Features such as secure self-service cross-cluster migrations, restricted privileges for Kasten Pods and ISO 27001 certification are intended to increase customers' security profiles.
The adoption of a least-privilege approach is designed to both minimise risks and improve compliance. The process of encrypting passkeys has also been simplified to help enterprises maintain robust security while improving operational efficiency.
Operational improvements in Kasten v8 include a refreshed user interface, updated policy management systems and the Restore Point Catalog, designed to help administrators manage backups and restore operations more easily. The Per Policy Protection Status provides a clearer view into backup policies for specific namespaces, making it easier to identify and address potential issues quickly.
In support of Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation Engine, which is positioned as a replacement for legacy virtualisation solutions, Veeam is introducing Kasten for Modern Virtualization.
This tailored pricing option aims to integrate with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Engine and is the result of collaboration between Veeam and Red Hat.

Mirantis has released a comprehensive reference architecture to support IT infrastructure for AI workloads, aiming to assist enterprises in deploying AI systems quickly and securely. The Mirantis AI Factory Reference Architecture is based on the company's k0rdent AI platform and designed to offer a composable, scalable, and secure environment for artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) workloads. According to Mirantis, the solution provides criteria for building, operating, and optimising AI and ML infrastructure at scale, and can be operational within days of hardware installation. The architecture leverages templated and declarative approaches provided by k0rdent AI, which Mirantis claims enables rapid provisioning of required resources. This, the company states, leads to accelerated prototyping, model iteration, and deployment—thereby shortening the overall AI development cycle. The platform features curated integrations, accessible via the k0rdent Catalog, for various AI and ML tools, observability frameworks, continuous integration and delivery, and security, all while adhering to open standards. Mirantis is positioning the reference architecture as a response to rising demand for specialised compute resources, such as GPUs and CPUs, crucial for the execution of complex AI models. "We've built and shared the reference architecture to help enterprises and service providers efficiently deploy and manage large-scale multi-tenant sovereign infrastructure solutions for AI and ML workloads," said Shaun O'Meara, chief technology officer, Mirantis. "This is in response to the significant increase in the need for specialized resources (GPU and CPU) to run AI models while providing a good user experience for developers and data scientists who don't want to learn infrastructure." The architecture addresses several high-performance computing challenges, including Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) networking, GPU allocation and slicing, advanced scheduling, performance tuning, and Kubernetes scaling. Additionally, it supports integration with multiple AI platform services, such as Gcore Everywhere Inference and the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software ecosystem. In contrast to typical cloud-native workloads, which are optimised for scale-out and multi-core environments, AI tasks often require the aggregation of multiple GPU servers into a single high-performance computing instance. This shift demands RDMA and ultra-high-performance networking, areas which the Mirantis reference architecture is designed to accommodate. The reference architecture uses Kubernetes and is adaptable to various AI workload types, including training, fine-tuning, and inference, across a range of environments. These include dedicated or shared servers, virtualised settings using KubeVirt or OpenStack, public cloud, hybrid or multi-cloud configurations, and edge locations. The solution addresses the specific needs of AI workloads, such as high-performance storage and high-speed networking technologies, including Ethernet, Infiniband, NVLink, NVSwitch, and CXL, to manage the movement of large data sets inherent to AI applications. Mirantis has identified and aimed to resolve several challenges in AI infrastructure, such as: Time-intensive fine-tuning and configuration compared to traditional compute systems; Support for hard multi-tenancy to ensure security, isolation, resource allocation, and contention management; Maintaining data sovereignty for data-driven AI and ML workloads, particularly where models contain proprietary information; Ensuring compliance with varied regional and regulatory standards; Managing distributed, large-scale infrastructure, which is common in edge deployments; Effective resource sharing, particularly of high-demand compute components such as GPUs; Enabling accessibility for users such as data scientists and developers who may not have specific IT infrastructure expertise. The composable nature of the Mirantis AI Factory Reference Architecture allows users to assemble infrastructure using reusable templates across compute, storage, GPU, and networking components, which can then be tailored to specific AI use cases. The architecture includes support for a variety of hardware accelerators, including products from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. Packaging giant boosts global data resilience with Veeam rollout
Detmold Group has implemented Veeam Data Platform to strengthen its data resilience strategy and support ongoing global business growth in the food and retail packaging sector. Operational challenges Detmold Group, operating through brands such as Detpak, PaperPak, and Detmold Packaging Sales, supplies paper and board packaging to high-profile international clients including McDonald's and Subway. The company's manufacturing facilities are integrated into customer supply chains worldwide, making uninterrupted operations a priority. Marc Koenecke, ICT Manager at Detmold Group, explained the company's growth ambitions and associated challenges. "We have an aggressive strategy for innovation, sales and business growth," said Koenecke. "As part of this long-term roadmap, we are now expanding our operations significantly in Europe and North America." According to Koenecke, maintaining high system availability is essential in minimising business risks. "We see the ability to recover our systems rapidly and reliably as a powerful way to mitigate risk across our global business." "We have a concept called 'million-dollar minutes' for some of our most vital applications, which demonstrates just how important availability and data resilience are to the business. A single day of downtime to a critical system such as our ERP or CRM platform could result in over $10 million in lost revenue, so we aim to ensure that our digital services are well protected," said Koenecke. The company has invested in modernising its IT infrastructure, utilising hyperconverged Nutanix clusters for international business units and cloud-based solutions like Microsoft 365 and Salesforce. However, prior to adopting Veeam, managing backups with manual processes and freeware increased complexity and demanded substantial time from the IT team. Implementing Veeam Detmold Group deployed Veeam Data Platform to automate and strengthen backup processes for its critical systems, covering more than 118 virtual machines across three on-premises Nutanix clusters. "When we first started with Veeam, we focused on improving the efficiency and reliability of our server backups," said Koenecke. "In each of the countries we operate in, we now use Veeam to replicate two copies of production data to network-attached storage [NAS] arrays. Veeam makes it very easy for us to keep track of our backup jobs and to identify performance bottlenecks in our hardware." The company later extended Veeam protection to its cloud infrastructure, working with partner 11:11 Systems to deploy Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 and store immutable copies of mailboxes and cloud data. Koenecke commented on this transition: "Our partner 11:11 Systems offers us the powerful capabilities of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 combined with unlimited storage for our data backups," he said. "Native cloud backup capabilities don't come close to the level of speed and granularity we get with Veeam. With Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, we can restore everything from individual mailboxes to large groups of users with just a couple of clicks." Detmold Group also sought to strengthen protection for its Salesforce CRM system, which previously relied on tenant backups incapable of capturing data such as file attachments and custom fields. "We were very limited in what we could restore using native Salesforce backups," said Koenecke. "Just like Microsoft 365, Veeam stood out in its ability to thoroughly protect all our Salesforce data, including custom objects, access permissions, and workflows." User experience and ongoing support Detmold Group has partnered with Veeam for more than seven years, with Koenecke highlighting the usability of Veeam's solutions. "All our Veeam solutions are extremely easy to use — we just point them at the data source, configure and schedule the job, and they're all set," Koenecke stated. "When new people join our team, they are always up and running with Veeam very quickly. Over the years, if we have come up against a more complex problem or wanted to learn about new features, we've used Veeam University and the community forums to find the information we needed." Veeam's capabilities have supported the group as its data volume grows 10% year-over-year, enabling Detmold to maintain two-hour recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs). "We back up around 2 TB of change data a week with Veeam, which is mostly driven by our planning and forecasting systems for manufacturing and logistics," said Koenecke. "Working with an industry leader like Veeam with an excellent reputation for data resilience gives our leadership confidence that our key systems are protected 24/7." Real-world impact During operational incidents, Detmold Group has experienced fast recoveries using Veeam solutions. "Using Veeam, we were able to restore our ERP database using a backup that was only 30 minutes old," Koenecke reported. "Less than an hour later, and we'd used Veeam to restore our ERP system into production. Having a single point of control for all our backup and recovery needs is a massive advantage." The company is planning to further increase its cloud presence and continue its partnership with Veeam. "Looking ahead, we're very interested in deepening our partnership as we build out our cloud services. Veeam is always an easy sell for us internally because they offer clear pricing and strong benefits," said Koenecke. Employee onboarding Detmold Group has also found Veeam's solutions efficient for onboarding. "Our new joiners never have trouble getting started with Veeam," said Koenecke.
