A West Lothian primary school pupil has turned a good gag into a golden ticket for Holyrood after being named a finalist in a national joke-telling competition.
John McGlynn, a primary three pupil at St John Ogilvie RC Primary School, has been crowned the winner of West Lothian's regional heat in the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists' (RCSLT) VoiceBox competition – a national joke-telling contest celebrating the power of communication.
With a joke that had judges in stitches, John now heads to the Grand Final at the Scottish Parliament on June 5th, where 32 of Scotland's funniest primary school pupils – one from each local authority – will compete for the title of VoiceBox Champion 2025.
John's joke which earned a place in the final, was: 'Why does Scottish Mickey Moose not go in his airplane anymore? Because it Disney land!
The event will be hosted by Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, with Zara Janjua, BBC journalist and stand-up comedian, taking the mic as compère.
Now in its second year, VoiceBox launched on Blue Monday – the so-called 'saddest day of the year' – with a very different energy, thanks to last year's winners from Cockenzie Primary in East Lothian.
Since then, schools across Scotland have been submitting their funniest entries in a joyful celebration of confidence, creativity and communication.
John has already secured £100 worth of Collins Big Cat books for their school, and is in the running for other prizes including £500 of books for the winning school; £200 of books for second and third place plus, a £100 toy gift card for the top three finalists.
Glenn Carter, Head of RCSLT Scotland, said: 'We're incredibly proud of all the regional winners who've earned a place in the national final. VoiceBox is about much more than making people laugh.
'It's about highlighting the vital role that communication plays in every part of a child's life. Speech, language and communication, skills are the foundation for learning, social connection, mental wellbeing and future employment.
'Yet too many children still struggle without the support they need, often going unnoticed.
'Competitions like VoiceBox show just how powerful a child's voice can be when given a platform and why it's so important that we continue to invest in speech and language therapy to support children's communication.
'These children aren't just telling jokes. They're showing us how the ability to communicate can positively impact confidence, creativity and connection.'

The 70,000 fans at each show would need to neck three pints each to eclipse previous sales. And DF Concerts expect a 'spirited audience' with 'medium to high intoxication' at the Oasis gig. Figures suggest fans could guzzle more than 120,000 drinks each night, based to historic sales figures from other mega concerts at the venue. A breakdown shows beer has been particularly popular with rock fans while pop-loving punters prefer cider and wine. Entertainment guru Donald MacLeod, who helped plan Oasis' last Scottish gigs 16 years ago, said: 'Given the hospitality sector has been so brutalised by councils and government in the past few years, this is going to be a boom for many bars, pubs and restaurants in the Edinburgh area. 'I think it's going to be supersonic when they play in Edinburgh. And I hope they set a new record for alcohol sales. 'Alcohol gets the better of a few people. But I think we have to 'roll with it' and enjoy it. It's not going to be a 'champagne supernova' as such, fans are more likely to drink beer. 'Cigarettes And Alcohol is one of their greatest songs. Whilst the fans may have ditched the cigarettes, there's still plenty of alcohol there to be drunk - as long as they do it safely.' Mr MacLeod, who has an MBE for services in music and charity, promoted Oasis gigs in 2000 and 2009 together with Regular Music. Documents said there had been few arrests at previous Gallagher brothers gigs, but fears were raised about clashes with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. A paper noted 'concern about crowds of Oasis on weekends as they are already rowdy and the tone of the band.' It added: 'Concerned about the safety of the Fringe and its performers. Many performers are considering not attending for that weekend.' Emails show council chiefs have also been in contact with other major cities hosting Oasis gigs - including Cardiff, Manchester and Dublin - in a bid to 'share ideas' and 'best practice for the event.' We are now just days away from the Oasis Live 25 tour kicking off in Cardiff with final details emerging The support acts playing at as part of the Oasis Live 25 tour are sure to delight most fans - as they have regularly played with Oasis in the past. The first act playing will be Cast, the Liverpool band formed in 1992 by John Power and best known for their 1995 albums All Change. Speaking about playing on the tour, John told the Mirror he will be their as an Oasis fan as well as playing before them. The band split up in 2001 but reformed in 2010 and last year they toured as support for Liam Gallagher as he played a Definitely Maybe Oasis tour which fans loved. And now the Manchester frontman has personally got them back for the Oasis shows. John said: "I got a call from a number, and I have got Liam and Noel's numbers and all that, but it was a different number, and I don't normally answer them. "And I picked it up, and it was Debbie, Liam's manager and his wife, and Liam in the background as well. And then Liam, he'd just spoken to Noel and they just discussed it, and they just said, 'You know, look, we just spoke to our kid. Do you want to open up on the tour?' As well as the call from Liam, Cast firmly have the Oasis seal-of-approval with Noel Gallagher previously describing frontman John as being 'as cosmic as the day is long.' Fans can expect John to belt out 'Alright' and 'Finetime' to fire up audiences from the off, while slow burners such as 'Sandstorm' and 'Walkaway' are perfect for early singalongs in the stadiums. After touring with Oasis, Cast will then be on the road themselves with dates going through the year. The second and main support act will be Richard Ashcroft, the former Verve frontman. He has been playing alongside Oasis since the Nineties when they began. When they started out Oasis would support The Verve at shows because they were the bigger band. Speaking about the upcoming tour, Richard said: "I see it as I've got a very important part to play in this. "You know, back in the day Oasis supported The Verve and then it flipped around and we supported Oasis at Earls Court, then I as a solo artist have played with Oasis." He went on to tell the Chris Moyles Show on Radio X: "I said to Noel, 'You know, I think I'm the only person who could go in this slot. Especially for a huge outdoor show, because everyone wants you lot. And unless you're coming with something, unless you've got something to offer, I don't know what's gonna happen'." His first chapter with The Verve reached a remarkable peak with 'Urban Hymns', and his support slot is sure to be a hit-laden set with the likes of 'Bitter Sweet Symphony', 'The Drugs Don't Work', 'Lucky Man' and 'Sonnet'. These tracks made Urban Hymns one of the biggest selling albums in UK history with 11 x Platinum certifications. As well as the Oasis Live 25 tour, Ashcroft will play select headline shows and festivals this Summer. According to the official Prinicipality Stadium website, doors open for the opening gig on July 4 at 5pm. Both support acts will be expected to play 30-45 minutes on stage, before the main event of Oasis back on stage for the first time since 2009. Based on previous shows at the Principality Stadium, the main headline act normally ends around 10.20pm. Cast would therefore be on stage around 6.30, followed by Richard Ashcroft, with Oasis taking to the stage around 8pm. Last Summer the Foo Fighters played the Principality Stadium and came on at 7.35pm but played an epic 25 song set. Oasis who are returning after some time away, may play a slightly shorter set, especially based on their history of punchier shorter set lists.

King Charles knew Queen had died after hearing two devastating words
It was a bittersweet moment for Charles as he stepped into the role he'd been waiting for his whole life for. The Royal Family has been through a few twists and turns but it was the end of a long stable chapter for the UK when Queen Elizabeth died in 2022. The monarch served an incredible 70 years on the throne, making her Britain's longest-reigning, and she was one of the most popular public figures across the globe. With the end of an era marked by the Queen's death, it also heralded a new beginning as King Charles stepped into the role he'd been waiting to do his whole life. At the age of 73, Charles became King, a bittersweet move as he was forced to navigate his new position whilst also grieving for his mum, as writes the Mirror. The Queen was at Balmoral and had been at the Scottish estate for the weeks leading up to her death at the age of 96. On the morning she passed, September 8, 2022, the then Prince Charles was called and told that it would not be long before his mother died. He was joined by his sister Anne, and the pair spent the final few hour's of the monarch's life taking turns to sit beside her, it's revealed in a new documentary. Channel 5's Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, sees experts discuss the moment Charles became the new King as they delve into the fact that he was 'summoned to Balmoral" from his own home on the Aberdeenshire estate, Birkhall, which is described as one of his favourite residences. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said in the documentary: 'He was told that it would probably be a few hours before she passed away." Royal expert and journalist Emily Andrews added: "Charles and Anne had been taking it in turns to sit with the Queen and then, I think, as she slipped into a coma, Charles needed a bit of fresh air and some nature. "So he went to the grounds of Birkhall, and it was there that he took the call." Viewers will discover that ahead of Charles being given the official news of the Queen's death, he already knew thanks to two words that were said to him upon answering the call. Jennie said: "He knew what had happened. "Because he was addressed by the person who rang him, the courtier, as 'Your Majesty' and then he knew, 'Well, my mother has died' and obviously he raced back to Balmoral to be at her side." It's also claimed in the documentary that members of the family felt relief after their huge loss because the Queen had been able to spend her last days at her beloved Balmoral, where she'd spent some of her happiest times. Emily Andrews added: "I think everybody in the Royal Family, actually, was really glad it happened in Scotland and for Charles as well to be at Birkhall, where it's such a kind of safe space for him, he feels very calm and relaxed, I think was very important'. After the news circulated within the wider family, Prince William, Edward and Andrew soon travelled to Balmoral, followed a short time later by Prince Harry. Following the monarch's passing, her coffin was taken to Edinburgh where it laid in rest and Scots were able to say goodbye and pay their respects. The coffin was then flown to RAF Northolt and taken back to London to lie in state at Westminster Hall.
