IIT-K, SBI Foundation launch startup innovations initiative
Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur's Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC), in partnership with SBI Foundation, the CSR arm of the State Bank of India, launched the 'Startup Innovations for Social Good' initiative under SBIF Innovators for Bharat on Thursday.
The initiative is also supported by SBI DFHI Limited and SBI Ventures. The programme was announced on Thursday at an event held at the IIT-K Outreach Centre, Noida.
The initiative will nurture 30 impact-driven startups—24 of which will be early-stage and 6 will be growth-stage—in domains such as AgriTech, Healthcare, and CleanTech. Spanning 18 months, the program will offer a structured incubation program with continuous mentoring, domain-specific support, and performance monitoring to ensure effective, socially impactful outcomes.
The launch event was attended by Amey Karkare, dean of resources and alumni, IIT-K; Deepu Philip, professor incharge, Innovation & Incubation, FIRST; Sanjay Prakash, MD & CEO, SBI Foundation; Ambika Prasad Bhuyan, vice president (head marketing and strategies), SBI DFHI Ltd; Kapil Kaul, CEO, IIT-Kanpur development foundation; Kumar Alok IAS (Retd.), former Chief Secretary Tripura and Prof of Practice, IIT-K; Aman Bhaiya, vice president and head (Strategy) SBI Foundation; and Piyush Mishra, COO, FIRST SIIC Kanpur, among other dignitaries.

Kolkata: IIT-Kharagpur Jadavpur University and Calcutta University are the only three institutes from Bengal that have made it to QS World Ranking 2026. While IIT-Kharagpur and JU improved their rank, CU's position saw a dip. The list this year features 54 institutes from the QS World University Rankings, published annually by the London-based global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, assess universities based on performance indicators, like academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact, international student diversity, graduate has climbed seven spots from 222nd rank last year to 215th. It also ranked 4th among the IITs. The new IIT Kharagpur director, Suman Chakraborty, said, "We have performed better than last year but our rank can improve if we can create a positive impression on the outer world as perception plays an important role." The outgoing acting director, Amit Patra, said, "Our performance in citations per faculty, international research network and sustainability, helped us better our position."At 676, JU's rank improved significantly from last year's position between 721 and 730. "As a state-run institute, we have constraints, including funds crunch. Still, JU has been performing well. The credit goes to our teachers', researchers' and students' dedication. Improvement in areas, like faculty-student ratio, international student diversity and international student ratio, could have advanced our rank, but they do not depend entirely on the university," said an rank dropped to a place between 771 and 780 from last year's 751 to 760. CU acting VC Santa Datta said, "The rank has slightly dipped but it's a proud moment that we are still among institutes on the world ranking list. With limited resources, my aim is to develop the university holistically, focusing on research and international network."

QS Rankings 2026: The QS World University Rankings, released on Thursday featured the best performing institutions around the world. A total of 54 Indian institutions made it to the QS Global Rankings with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi as the best performing Indian institution. The Sustainability Score evaluates how well an institution contributes to areas such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, student well-being, transparency, and ethical decision-making. Here are the top 10 Indian institutions according to the QS World Rankings 2026 with their sustainability scores: The best performing Indian institute is the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi with an overall rank of 123 among the top institutions around the world. IIT, Delhi earned a sustainability score of 79.9. The second Indian institution is the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) with an overall 129 rank. IIT, Bombay earned a sustainability score of 75.2. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) with an overall 180th position, earned a sustainability score of 73. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) secured the 215th position overall, earning a sustainability score of 77.8. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore acquired 219 rank among the top institutions according to the QS World Rankings 2025 with a sustainability score of 66.3. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) secured an overall rank of 222, earning a sustainability score of 74.7. University of Delhi got an overall rank of 328 and a sustainability score of 71.2. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) achieved the lowest sustainability score of 43 among the top 10 Indian institutions in QS World University Rankings 2026, with an overall rank of 334. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) with an overall rank of 339 earned a sustainability score of 57.5. Anna University, Chennai at 465th rank achieved a sustainability score of 64.5. A total of eight Indian universities debuted in the QS Global University Rankings this year, reflecting a positive growth in the overall quality of higher education institutions of the country.
