Sabah communities encouraged to cultivate their lands for future generations, not sell
KOTA KINABALU: Locals with native lands are advised to develop them instead of selling, as land is an asset that can be handed down to their children and can help support their livelihood when cultivated, says Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.
The Deputy Chief Minister II, who is also the state Local Government and Housing Minister, said some people wait 10 years or more to receive their grants or titles.
'Do not sell your lands as these are assets that should be preserved and cultivated,' said the Deputy Chief Minister II, who is also the state Local Government and Housing Minister, after handing over 205 land grants under the Sabah Native Land Services Programme (Pantas) in Kg Tambatuon in Kota Belud on Tuesday(April 29).
Joachim stated that land is important for the local natives, particularly the Kadazandusun, Murut, and Rungus communities.
'Some people wait 10 years before finally getting their land titles, before this Pantas programme. We thank the Land and Surveys Department for their effort in preparing these grants smoothly,' he said at the event, which some 300 villagers attended.
Speaking about the land grants, he said the titles were only issued to participating applicants whose lands had been worked on and land that did not involve areas of dispute or owned lands.
'If disputes on the lands apply, Pantas will not be implemented. Local community leaders must identify and provide the information needed,' said Joachim.

500 Ranau folks finally receive their land titles

RANAU: More than 500 residents in the three villages here finally received their land titles applied for through the Land and Survey Department's (JTU) Pantas programme. The land titles were distributed by the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir during the Kg Narawang, Kg Waluhu and Kg Lutut Pantas Programme Land Title handover ceremony at Mini Dewan Kg Narawang on Monday. Advertisement Abidin said 396 land titles were submitted at the event, while another 148 would be submitted next month after all the process is complete. 'We gather here because we have a significant event for the three villages. We know that this land has long been occupied by the villagers but legal ownership has not been obtained due to the difficulty of obtaining land titles. 'Finally, today the dream of the people to get a land title can be realised. We want to express our gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as his initiative for holding this Pantas programme throughout the state,' he said. Abidin, who is also Paginatan Assemblyman, also thanked JTU for its commitment to implement a significant government programme for the people. He said the next Pantas programme would be in Suminimpod Mukim as well as in the Tinanom, Kodop and Kigiwit. For Kg Bongkud and Namaus, he said, the approval of the Pantas programme was already obtained, and is only waiting for the allocation to be issued. 'Congratulations to all the recipients of the land titles. Hopefully, they can be passed down to our grandchildren as this is the most precious treasure. 'As Paginatan wakil rakyat, I urge all residents of the three villages to continue supporting Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) on the basis of the commitment and continued efforts of the government to prosper the people's lives. 'The government should be supported for the sake of development programmes through the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan (SMJ),' he said. Meanwhile, JTU representative, Saat Durasit said the department's initial target was to issue only 500 land titles through Pantas but after entering the field, it has successfully completed the land marking of about 600 land titles. 'Pantas measurement is very popular. In the Ranau parliamentary constituency, all state constituencies have their own Pantas programme but the most active is in Paginatan. 'We congratulate Datuk Abidin because he really worked hard to support this Pantas programme. JTU will always implement this programme as long as the government's allocation is still available,' he said. Village Head Nahur Masipah, representing the three villages, thanked Abidin because for his hard work, the villagers could now confirm land ownership after receiving the land titles. 'Thanks also to JTU for realising our dream of having a land title to the land we have long been working on. 'This is a history for us in Kg Narawang, Kg Lutut and Kg Waluhu for receiving a large number of land titles. This historic day has changed our lives for the better,' he said. What began in 1986 must continue, Madius on preservation of Kadazandusun language

He said events like these are vital in raising public awareness about the importance of safeguarding the mother tongue from extinction, particularly among the younger generation. Advertisement 'This carnival is very important as it reminds us of the need to use our mother tongue in communication. If we do not act now, our language may one day disappear,' he said when officiating the event, recently. Madius said studies by Unesco revealed there are around 7,000 indigenous languages at risk of extinction, which may eventually become dead languages due to the absence of speakers. By the year 2050, 90 per cent of these languages are expected to be extinct – much like Sanskrit and Latin. He also shared his long and challenging journey in advocating for the Kadazandusun language, which began in 1986 when he was first elected as a Supreme Council Member of the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA), later becoming Chairman of the KDCA Language and Literature Committee. Among the main efforts initiated during that time was the development of the Kadazandusun Language Dictionary and the selection of a standard dialect to be used within the Malaysian education system. 'We began in 1986, but it was no easy task. Eventually, the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) Sabah appointed a Research Officer – my colleague Alice Jekop – in 1988 to lead the research team. 'Many contributed their efforts, including Ben Topin, Rita Lasimbang and others. The dictionary was only published in 1995, nearly 10 years later and thanks to everyone involved. 'The dictionary was based on the Kadazan dictionary by Fr Antonissen, with the support of various parties, especially the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL). Although it took a long time, it was finally completed,' he said. The Kadazandusun Language Symposium held at Perkasa Hotel, Kundasang – supported by Canadian University Students Overseas (Cuso) – also laid the foundation for unifying the Bundu and Liwan dialects, which today form the basis of the Kadazandusun Language. 'It's quite remarkable that in the same year the Kadazan dictionary was printed – 1995 – an agreement was reached between KDCA and USDA to formalise the combination of the 'Bundu' and 'Liwan' dialects into what is now known as the 'Bunduliwan' dialect, officially branded as the Kadazandusun Language. 'Today, Kadazandusun is taught as a subject within the national education system. Many have graduated with specialisations in the language at PhD, Master's and Bachelor's levels, and thousands of students are currently learning it from kindergarten and Year One right up to SPM level,' said Madius. He expressed full support for efforts of teachers in the district to establish Tinimungan Manampasi Boros Kadazandusun (Timbok) – an initiative to strengthen the teaching and learning of the language, while also providing opportunities for retired Kadazandusun language teachers to remain actively involved in writing, research, and other activities to preserve the language. Kadazandusun, Sabah's heritage bearers and nation builders
HISTORY | The Kadazandusun (also spelt Kadazan-Dusun) are the largest ethnic group in Sabah (formerly North Borneo), Malaysia. The term 'Kadazandusun' was officially adopted to unify two closely related groups: the Kadazan, who traditionally inhabited the coastal and lowland areas of western Sabah, and the Dusun, who predominantly resided in the interior and highland regions.
