Luciane Buchanan Interview — Voices Of The Pacific

Buzz Feed23-05-2025

BuzzFeed: You portrayed Rose Larkin in The Night Agent, one of Netflix's most-watched shows of all time. How does it feel being one of the first Pacific Islander women — if not the very first — to star in a Netflix show?
There's a big shift in your character from Season 1 to Season 2 as Rose struggles with the trauma and PTSD of everything she went through. What was it like tapping into her vulnerable side and highlighting mental health on the show?
At the end of Season 2, Peter tells Rose to stay away — a heartbreaking moment for all the fans like me who want to see Peter and Rose together. Does that mean fans shouldn't expect to see you in Season 3?
I was so happy to see Simone Kessell playing your aunt in Season 1. Casting a fellow Pacific Islander to play Rose's relative surprised me actually — that's still not the norm in Hollywood. While the industry is slowly but surely making progress, what do you hope to see in the coming years?
Lea Tupu'anga/Mother Tongue, which was the first professional short film both written and directed by Tongan women, was also your first script! Do you plan to continue writing?
One of the Lea Tupu'anga/Mother Tongue's major themes is being mixed: the cultural disconnect of not knowing your mother tongue and perhaps not feeling 'Tongan enough.' As an afakasi woman myself, that feeling is something I've experienced, too. How were you able to overcome this and grow confident in yourself? Or is this an ongoing journey for you?
For Pacific Islanders, there are so many aspects of our cultures that we hold close to our hearts, from our foods to our dances to our tattoos. What's your favorite part of your culture?
Do you have a favorite Tongan food?
You also star in Chief of War, which comes out on Aug. 1 on Apple TV+. I can't wait to finally watch! What can you tell us about your character and storyline?
Do you have any favorite behind-the-scenes memories with Jason Momoa?
If you could work with any Pacific Islander, who would it be and why?
What advice do you have for young Pacific Islander creatives?
Finally, what does being Pacific Islander mean to you?

Netflix previews The Sandman Season 2: ‘A showstopper everywhere you look'

Fans of The Sandman have been eagerly awaiting the second season of Netflix's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's beloved comic series. And with the newly released trailer for Season 2 (which you can check out below) having been shared online today, it's clear that their excitement is well-founded. The upcoming season promises, among other things, to take everything fans loved about Season 1 and make it even bolder and more visually stunning. The first season of The Sandman, which is still holding on to a solid 88% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, captivated viewers with elements like its intricate storytelling and standout performances — particularly from Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, the Lord of Dream. Season 2 will continue Dream's journey, picking up just a few weeks after the events of the first season. The new season begins with Dream on the path to recovery, transforming his palace and vowing to leave the past behind. But, as always in The Sandman universe, the past has a way of catching up. Today's Top Deals Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Memorial Day security camera deals: Reolink's unbeatable sale has prices from $29.98 'The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story,' showrunner Allan Heinberg said in a recent promotional interview with Netflix. 'When we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.' One of the key themes in the comments from fans and the team behind the show is the show's visual impact. The new trailer for Season 2, for example, has already sparked an outpouring of excitement, with viewers on YouTube calling it a 'visual masterpiece' — and many believe it looks set to be even more epic than Season 1. Indeed, while The Sandman has certainly always been known for its lavish, dreamlike aesthetic, the new season seems poised to take things to the next level. In the words of one YouTube commenter: 'Season 1 was a visual masterpiece, and this looks like it's raising the bar.' Heinberg, meanwhile, highlights the expansion of the team behind the show and the resources they had at their disposal. 'We are fortunate that nearly everyone who worked in front of or behind the camera for Season 1 is back for Season 2,' Heinberg continued in his interview. 'We all learned an enormous amount about the show in Season 1, so getting the same team back together a year or more later allowed us to build on everything we learned and to try to raise our game on every front.' The new season will also expand the story's universe even more, exploring different time periods, realms, and worlds that add complexity to Dream's narrative. The Sandman will take viewers to places like ancient Greece and Elizabethan England. In addition to settings like those, Season 2 will also introduce new faces, including the enigmatic Delirium (played by Esmé Creed-Miles), the youngest member of the Endless. Fans of the comics will recognize the Endless as anthropomorphic personifications of fundamental forces Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. As Heinberg explained, 'The Endless … are meant to go on in perpetuity. They're not supposed to change. But change is, of course, inevitable and essential to all life.' Heinberg goes on to note that there are many new characters, including Thor, Loki, and Odin, in a banquet scene with 'divine representatives' from different universes. 'It's a showstopper everywhere you look.' Also worth noting: This final season of the show will be split into two volumes, with the six-episode Volume 1 dropping on July 3 and five-episode Volume 2 coming on July 24. A special bonus episode is coming on July 31. 2 must-watch Netflix documentaries to stream this month

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. If your Netflix queue could use a dose of real-life drama, this month delivers two very different but equally binge-worthy documentary releases that might just keep you glued to your couch. One follows high-stakes dreams on the NFL sidelines, while the other is about a literal nightmare at sea. While Netflix's biggest releases are generally its original dramas like Squid Game and Wednesday, its series and movies based on real-life events are quite frequently just as compelling — and hit just as hard. That's definitely the case with these two new June releases we're going to spotlight in this post, one of which debuted today. Today's Top Deals Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Memorial Day security camera deals: Reolink's unbeatable sale has prices from $29.98 If Netflix documentaries are your thing, don't miss this deep dive I put together recapping some of the standout releases I watched last year. And, as always, you can stay on top of the regular lineup of new titles arriving on the streaming giant by following our monthly new release rundown. For now, though, we're going to take a closer look at the docuseries America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (Season 2) and the documentary film Trainwreck: Poop Cruise. High kicks, million-dollar smiles, and AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' blasting through AT&T Stadium can only mean one thing: It's time for cheerleader auditions again in Dallas. From Emmy-winning director Greg Whiteley comes the second season of this behind-the-scenes look at the most iconic cheerleading team in professional football. The new season picks up with open tryouts, as hopefuls from around the country compete for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys cheer squad. Mind you, making the squad is so competitive that even returning stars like Reece and Kelly V aren't guaranteed anything. The veterans have to prove themselves every year to earn their spot, just like the newcomers. 'I have the ability to make a dream come true — or not,' longtime DCC director Kelli Finglass says in the season opener. While the glittering game day routines are still a draw, the real power of America's Sweethearts lies in how the show digs into the personal lives of the cheerleaders — juggling second jobs, battling body image pressure, navigating social media, and, in some cases, confronting serious trauma. Season 2 also revisits the hot-button issue of pay, offering a candid look at the ongoing tension between performance, perception, and compensation. As for this next Netflix documentary release, Trainwreck: Poop Cruise revisits the now-infamous 2013 Carnival cruise that spiraled into disaster after an engine room fire left the ship stranded without power. For four harrowing days, more than 4,000 passengers were trapped onboard with no air conditioning, dwindling food, and non-functioning toilets. Raw sewage leaked throughout the ship, tempers flared — and the media, particularly cable news, had a field day. 'Just on our deck alone, there were the biohazard bags lined up across the floor,' passenger Bettina Rodriguez told CNN at the time. 'We're talking about raw sewage at just the end of our deck alone. It was repulsive.' This documentary uses first-person accounts and archival footage to piece together what really happened, how Carnival scrambled to contain the fallout, and how the incident became a pop-culture punchline almost overnight. It's part horror story, part corporate case study, and 100% unforgettable. One of Netflix's biggest TV series of all time is going out with a bang next week

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. Almost four years after its debut became a global phenomenon that redefined what a streaming hit can look like, Squid Game is preparing to take its final bow. The third and final season of Netflix's dystopian juggernaut hits the streamer June 27, and it promises to end the story the same way it began — with violence, and a whole lot of blood. Season 3 picks up in the rubble of Season 2's devastating finale, where Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) was betrayed and left reeling. His attempted rebellion against the architects of the game nearly succeeded — that is, until the Front Man, hiding in plain sight as Player 001, shattered the plan and executed Gi-hun's closest ally, Jung-bae, in cold blood. Now Gi-hun is blaming himself, unaware that the real knife in his back came from someone he trusted. Today's Top Deals Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Memorial Day security camera deals: Reolink's unbeatable sale has prices from $29.98 As always, Squid Game doesn't wait around for any of the players to catch their breath. As the games resume, the stakes climb even higher. This time, the rounds are more brutal and the choices even more personal. According to Netflix, surviving players will face moral and emotional reckoning with every decision they make. Meanwhile, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) isn't just back in charge; he's welcoming a new slate of mysterious VIPs while keeping his own secrets intact. And In-ho's brother, Jun-ho, is still on the hunt for the island, unaware that betrayal may be closer than he thinks. Writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk has promised to give the Netflix hit an epic send-off. Can we expect redemption? Or will the cruelty of the game consume what little humanity remains? To build anticipation, Netflix has also turned Squid Game into a global event, with real-world activations echoing the show's many iconic moments. Beginning June 6 in Shibuya, Tokyo, fans have been stepping into immersive pop-up spaces featuring the show's signature guards and re-enactments of its games. And the activations are spreading across the globe, with events in New York and Germany (June 20), Thailand (June 25), Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Indonesia (June 26), and a grand finale in Korea and Taiwan (July 6). Fans will get to try legacy games and even experience new ones like Jump Rope, recreated with chilling detail. The final season marks one last chance to see how far the game will go, and whether anyone can break its grip. Ready or not, Squid Game ends next week. And for Gi-hun and the rest, there's no going back.
