Joey Chestnut reveals July 4 plans after bitter fallout with Nathan's over iconic hot dog contest

Daily Mail26-05-2025

Joey Chestnut would be open to competing in this year's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest - though he doesn't expect to be asked back amid his ban from the competition last year.
Chestnut, who's won the famous July 4 event 16 times, did not compete last year in Coney Island due to his partnership with Impossible Foods, a plant-based food company which sells vegan hot dogs.
And while the legendary competitive eater would be happy to discuss a return to the competition, he's not holding his breath.
'If they came back with similar terms we were talking about last year, I would definitely consider it,' he told The Blast.
'I'd work with them to make sure there weren't any conflicts with other sponsors… But honestly, I don't think they want to go down that route. And yeah, it's a bummer. I love that contest.''
Chestnut added to the publication that he 'didn't think' his deal with Impossible would have any impact on his eligibility for the Nathan's contest, which he first won in 2007.
He also said that his partnership with Impossible Foods was merely to promote 'Meatless Mondays,' when he skips eating meat.
'I still don't know exactly where our relationship stands,' he said.
Nonetheless, Major League Eating said at the time that it was 'devastated' by Chestnut choosing his Impossible Foods partnership over competing in the Nathan's competition.
'MLE and Nathan's went to great lengths to accommodate Joey and his management team, agreeing to the appearance fee and allowing Joey to compete in a rival, unbranded hot dog eating contest on Labor Day,' they added in a statement.
'Joey Chestnut is an American hero. We would love nothing more than to have him at the Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, which he has dominated for years. We hope that he returns when he is not representing a rival brand.'
A source told the New York Post that Chestnut was paid $200,000 to appear at last year's contest, and was even offered a $1.2 million, four-year deal beginning this year.
MLE's Richard Shea insisted to NBC News that there was 'no ban,' though that contradicted what Chestnut said himself last year.
'I was gutted to learn from the media that after 19 years Im banned from the Nathan's July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest,' Chestnut said in a post to X.
'I love competing in that event, I love celebrating America with my fans all over this great country on the 4th and I have been training to defend my title.
'To set the record straight, I do not have a contract with MLE or Nathans and they are looking to change the rules from past years as it relates to other partners I can work with.
'This is apparently the basis on which I'm being banned, and it doesn't impact the July 4th event.
While Chestnut looks unlikely to be involved in this year's July 4 contest, he is attempting to set a popcorn eating record on Monday.
He wrote on Instagram that he'll be attempting to eat 34 servings of popcorn in eight minutes, with each serving amounting to 24 ounces.
Chestnut is doing the event from a Rural King supermarket location in Indiana.

Fresh frustration for Caitlin Clark as she struggles and Indiana Fever lose AGAIN

In the four games she's played since her return, Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark won the two matchups in the Commissioner's Cup against the New York Liberty and the Connecticut Sun. But in regular-season league play, Clark has now lost back-to-back contests as she continues to struggle since coming back from a quad injury. After only putting up 11 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists while shooting 3-for-14 against the expansion Golden State Valkyries, Clark struggled mightily again on Sunday afternoon. Clark shot a horrendous 1-for-10 from 3-point range and turned the ball over eight times in an 89-81 defeat to the Las Vegas Aces. She finished with 19 points and ten assists, but her shooting woes continued from the game prior - this time, going 7-for-20 from the field. Even one of her biggest fans, Dave Portnoy, admitted that the Fever guard is in need of a 'bounce back'. CC Stat line doesn't tell the story. Great couple games for Caitlin haters,' Portnoy posted on X. He also called the second half Clark played, 'As bad a half as I've seen her have.' Clark struggled in the first half, shooting 2-of-9 from the field and 1-of-5 from 3-point range, but dished eight assists while only committing two turnovers. The second half was a nightmare for her, as Clark shot 5-for-11 from the field and 0-for-5 from 3-point range while turning the ball over six times and putting up a -12 defensive rating. Portnoy continued: 'When she's off it's really hard for them to win. Turnovers. Bad shooting. The works. Lone bright spot. Aliyah [Boston] was great. Gotta bounce back.' Boston led the Fever with 26 points and ten rebounds. Aces star A'ja Wilson also struggled on the day, despite leading Las Vegas with 24 points. She shot 8-of-21 from the field. But she also had the benefit of some strong performances from Jackie Young (19 points, seven rebounds, seven assists) and Chelsea Gray (18 points on 66 percent shooting). Indiana is now 6-7 on the season. They next travel to the Pacific Northwest to play the Seattle Storm on Tuesday.

It's a wrap: the bandage dress is in vogue again

T he bandage dress is back. And for those of us who remember the last time around — and even the first time around — that's controversial news. Last September the model Kaia Gerber recreated her supermodel mother Cindy Crawford's look from the 1993 Oscars, when Crawford appeared alongside her boyfriend of the time, Richard Gere, in an ankle-length white bandage dress by Hervé Léger. In April Hailey Bieber-Baldwin wore floor-length burgundy Saint Laurent; this month it was vintage striped Léger. The hashtag bandagedress is picking up speed on TikTok. The first bandage dresses were seen on the Azzedine Alaïa catwalks in the Eighties. Hervé Léger's version, dating from the early Nineties, is perhaps the more widely recognised — and markedly less comfortable — of the two. The supermodels had split loyalties but, whichever they chose, they were wearing a bandage dress.
