has authorised
Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited
(CPDL) to inspect and check the premises of consumers to detect theft or misuse of electricity, with immediate effect.
The officer authorised by the company may enter, inspect, break open, and search any place where he has reason to believe that electricity is being used unauthorisedly. The officer may search, seize, and remove all devices, instruments, wires, and any other facilitators or articles used for the unauthorised use of electricity.
He may examine or seize any books of account or documents which, in his opinion, are useful or relevant to any proceedings in respect of the offence under subsection (1) of Section 135 of the Act. He shall allow the person from whose custody such books of account or documents are seized to make copies of the same.
As per UT notification, the occupant of the place of search or any person on his behalf shall remain present during the search. A list of all things seized shall be prepared and delivered to such occupant or person, who shall sign the list. It is provided that no inspection, search, and seizure of any domestic places or domestic premises shall be carried out between sunset and sunrise except in the presence of an adult male member occupying such premises.
The provisions of BNSS (Act 46 of 2023) relating to search and seizure shall apply, as far as may be, to searches and seizures carried out by the authorised officer or official.

Navi Mumbai: A Mercedes Benz allegedly driven by an 19-year-old woman rammed into the rear end of a scooty ahead of it on the Sion-Panvel highway near Kharghar on Wednesday night, killing a woman who was sitting pillion on the two-wheeler. Her husband riding the scooty sustained bruises to both his legs, right hand and face as the scooty skid on the road due to the collision. The deceased woman has been identified as Rekha Yadav (50). She and her injured husband Gopal Yadav (54) lived in New Panvel. Acting on a complaint by Gopal Yadav, Kharghar police have booked Tithi Vinayak Singh, an engineering student, who lives in New Panvel, under relevant sections of BNS for rash driving on public way, causing death by negligence and endangering human life or personal safety of other. However, as per the provision of the law, the accused Singh was not arrested but served with a notice under BNSS directing her to co-operate in police investigation, informed Kharghar police. The mishap occurred around 8.45 pm when the accused Tithi Singh was returning home on her Mercedes after visiting her friend in Belapur.— George Mendonca

Chandrapur: In a late-night operation, Bhadravati police arrested a 19-year-old youth for allegedly possessing nearly 1.5 kg of ganja which he was ferrying on a motorcycle. The accused, identified as Kshitij Sanjay Junghare, a resident of Bhangaram Ward in Bhadravati, was caught near Chanda gate No. 3, Sumthana Chowk, around 1am on Saturday. The action was taken following a tip-off received by sub-inspector Mohan Dongarle and his team during routine patrolling in the area. According to police sources, the youth was transporting the contraband from Chandrapur on a bike with a shoulder bag. On intercepting him and searching the bag in the presence of witnesses, police recovered a substance suspected to be ganja. Weighing experts confirmed the quantity to be 1.480 kg, valued at Rs 29,080. The motorcycle, worth Rs 60,100, was also seized, taking the total value of the seized material to Rs 89,180. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is under way.

Bengaluru: Close on the heels of the ban on bike-taxi services, Bengalureans complained about rising incidents of "autocracy" with several incidents of autorickshaw drivers fleecing the commuters with faulty meters. Cracking the whip on such errant drivers, Bengaluru Traffic Police booked over 1,000 cases Saturday and collected Rs 4.9 lakh in fine from autorickshaws and other traffic violators in the west division. Based on the commuters' ordeal, TOI published a report on traffic violations in its June 20 edition. During the day-long drive against errant autorickshaw drivers in and around Majestic, Ananda Rao Circle, KSR Railway Station, MG Road, Church Street, Cubbon Park and surrounding areas, 180 cases were booked under various sections of the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act and fine worth Rs 89,700 was collected. The highest number of cases (84) was booked against auto drivers not wearing the khaki uniform, resulting in a fine of Rs 42,000. Similarly, 52 cases were booked against those demanding excess fare and Rs 21,600 was collected in fine. As many as 44 auto drivers were booked for refusing to go for hire and a fine worth Rs 21,600 was collected, according to BTP officials. Similarly, the RTO officials must also verify the authenticity of the meters in all autorickshaws," explained a senior traffic police inspector.
