Guwahati, Agartala turning gateways to Southeast Asia, says Jyotiraditya Scindia
New Delhi [India], May 29 (ANI): Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of Communications and Development of the northeastern region, on Thursday said that Guwahati and Agartala are being made gateways to Southeast Asian nations, given their proximity to these countries.
Speaking at the CII Annual Business Summit 2025 in New Delhi, Scindia underscored the significance of the Northeast as a centre piece of India's progress with the decadal growth rate exceeding 12-13 per cent.
'You'll be astonished that flying time from Guwahati to Mumbai is the same as the flying time from Guwahati to Singapore. The flying time from Agartala to Chennai is the same as the flying time from Agartala to Bangkok. And so it is our government's resolve that Guwahati and Agartala will be made into international gateways to connect to the rest of Southeast Asia, ' the minister said.
He added that the eight states of the Northeast would emerge as the engine driving India's ambition of Viksit Bharat.
The Prime Minister has transformed the Northeast through landmark initiatives -- gross budgetary support for infrastructure investments has gone up significantly in areas such as airports, national highways, etc.
Tax devolution to NER states has grown multifold, while grants-in-aid have nearly doubled. The Northeast is being visualised as the gateway for trade with South-East Asia.
The minister alluded that India is leading the revolution in technology and telecommunications space at present.
He said that India is seen as a digital-first economy, and there is a telecom revolution currently underway.
The minister further added that scalability has reduced the cost of communication, which is among the lowest in the world.
He added that the country has achieved 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in telecom and is among the four countries manufacturing the technology stack.
Technology is also transforming the postal department with new services being introduced in the postal system, added the Minister.
Congratulating CII on the AGM theme of building trust, the Minister stated that CII has made a remarkable contribution to developmental efforts, which impact every citizen in the country and said that building trust is founded on the principle of consistency.
India, emerging as the fourth largest economy in the world, is a commendable achievement, he said.
Sanjiv Puri, President, CII, while congratulating the Minister for garnering investment interest of Rs 4.3 lakh crore from the Rising North-East Investors Summit 2025, stated that the North-East was transforming into India's strategic gateway to South-East Asia, powering trade, connectivity and our ambition for Viksit Bharat.
There is tremendous scope for industry participation in areas such as developing skill hubs in hospitality, food processing etc, which should be leveraged for maximum advantage, he added. (ANI)

Operation Sindhu: 517 Indian nationals returned to India from Iran so far, says MEA
Nearly 517 Indian nationals have so far returned to India from Iran under Operation Sindhu , Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Saturday. A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in Delhi in the early hours of June 21, bringing home Indian nationals from Iran as part of Operation Sindhu. The ongoing evacuation exercise was launched by the Indian government following rising security risks due to the conflict between Iran and Israel. Jaiswal confirmed the latest arrival in a post on X. 'Operation Sindhu continues. A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in New Delhi at 0300 hrs on 21st June, bringing Indians from Iran home. With this, so far 517 Indian nationals from Iran have returned home under Operation Sindhu,' he posted. The action was so swift that we cannot express our gratitude in words. I want to thank Modi ji and Yogi ji who made all the arrangements for us,' Naqvi was quoted as saying by ANI. Kulsum, another Indian national who returned safely, said the situation was tense in Iran. 'The situation in Iran is not good. We were very worried. The government helped us a lot and brought us back home safely,' she said while speaking to ANI. Earlier, the first batch of evacuees, 110 Indian students, including 90 from Jammu and Kashmir, was transported out of northern Iran to Armenia, before being flown to New Delhi. Most of the students were enrolled at Urmia Medical University . The evacuation continues as the Israel-Iran conflict entered its ninth day on Saturday. The fighting began on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes targeting Iranian military and nuclear installations in what it called 'Operation Rising Lion.' Foreign investors infuse ₹1209 cr in Indian equities this week, net outflow in June stands at ₹4192 cr: NSDL
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 21 (ANI): Foreign investment in the Indian equity market remained positive during the week from June 16 to June 20, though the net inflows declined compared to the previous week, as per the latest data released by the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). According to the data, foreign investors made net inflows worth ₹ 1,209 crore in Indian equities this week. The inflows were largely supported by significant buying activity on Wednesday and Friday. Market experts attributed this trend to foreign participation in several block deals offered during the week, along with notable inflows on Friday due to the FTSE rebalancing. Siddhartha Khemka, Head Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services told ANI "FPI inflows this week has been driven by buying seen in several blocks offered during the week as well as large inflows on Friday due to FTSE rebalancing. Overall Indian economy stands strong driven by healthy economic growth multi year low inflation, rate cut by RBI as well as prospects of a above normal monsoon". Despite the positive movement this week, foreign portfolio investment (FPI) flows for the month of June so far continue to remain in the negative. As of June 20, the net outflows by foreign investors stood at ₹ 4,192 crore. However, this is an improvement from the previous week (ending June 13), when net outflows were higher at ₹ 5,402 crore. This reduction in outflows reflects some signs of stabilization in FPI sentiment. Khemka added that the recent inflows are being driven by India's strong economic fundamentals. These factors are collectively boosting investor confidence and encouraging selective foreign investment, even amid global uncertainties. Looking ahead, he suggested that both global and domestic factors will influence FPI trends in the coming week. Key global triggers include geopolitical developments, fluctuations in crude oil prices amid tensions in middle east, and the approaching deadline for the imposition of US reciprocal tariffs. On the domestic front, important drivers will be macroeconomic indicators, institutional buying support, and sector-specific triggers such as monsoon progress, consumption trends, and infrastructure push. These elements are expected to determine stock specific movements and FPI behaviour in the short term. Earlier in May, the net foreign portfolio investment (FPI) inflows remained in positive and stood at ₹ 19,860 crore, making May the best-performing month so far this year in terms of foreign investment. The previous months' data also showed that FPIs had sold stocks worth ₹ 3,973 crore in March. In January and February, they had sold equities worth ₹ 78,027 crore and ₹ 34,574 crore, respectively.
