Delhi courts crumble under mounting caseload
NEW DELHI: Suresh Kumar, a 59-year-old resident of Rohini, stands in the corridor of a Delhi district court, visibly weary.
'It has been over five years. I am running from post to pillar to seek justice for land illegally occupied by my brother. The court keeps giving me dates, but nothing substantial has happened. At this rate, my property case will be solved after my death.'
His words echo the painful reality faced by lakhs of people trapped in the web of judicial delays. Despite having one of the strongest legal infrastructures in the country, Delhi's courts are buried under a backlog of cases. As of January 1, 2025, more than 14 lakh cases were pending in the capital's district courts.
Years without progress
One in every five of these cases has been awaiting resolution for over five years, and around two per cent have been pending for more than a decade. Each case number is a real person like Suresh—waiting, hoping, and slowly losing faith in the system.This is not an overnight crisis. It has been building steadily. In 2017, each district judge in Delhi handled an average of 1,551 cases. By 2024, this number rose to 2,023 cases per judge. While still below the national average of 2,200, the burden remains overwhelming.
Low clearance rate
Delhi's Case Clearance Rate (CCR)—a measure of how many cases are disposed of against how many are filed—was 78 per cent in 2024, among the lowest in India.
Only once in the past eight years, in 2023, did Delhi courts manage a 100 per cent CCR.
The India Justice Report 2025, published by Tata Trusts and several legal advocacy groups, presented a grim scenario. Despite Delhi having one of the lowest judicial vacancy rates (11 per cent) and the highest representation of women judges (45 per cent), the courts are still struggling to clear the growing pile of unresolved matters. The consequences are more than inconvenient—they are a direct threat to liberty. 91 per cent of Delhi's prison population consists of undertrials—people who have not yet been convicted. Thousands remain in jail for months or even years because their cases have not moved forward. This is a serious violation of the right to a speedy trial, a basic tenet of justice.

DK Suresh elected Bengaluru Milk Union chairman, eyes KMF post
B engaluru: Former Bangalore Rural MP, DK Suresh, brother of deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, was elected unopposed as chairman of Bengaluru Milk Union (Bamul) on Thursday. This marks Suresh's first electoral victory since his defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He secured the Bamul chairmanship after winning a seat on the union's board representing Kanakapura. Alongside Suresh, 10 other Congress-backed candidates had previously won seats, bringing the party's total to 11 out of 14 on the union board. KMF oversees 16 milk unions across Karnataka's lucrative dairy industry and wields considerable political clout. However, Suresh's nomination for the KMF post could run into stiff resistance since chief minister Siddaramaiah's camp is backing Malur MLA KY Nanje Gowda. The situation is further complicated by current KMF chairman LBP Bheema Naik's claim that Siddaramaiah had assured him of another term. In fact, Naik, recently met Siddaramaiah regarding a delay in elections of another milk union spanning Raichur, Ballari, and Vijayanagara districts (RBKV). Naik expressed concern that the delay could diminish his support base and ruin his chance of winning again. Speaking to a Kannada news channel, Naik said the Dharwad bench of the high court cleared the way for elections on June 2, following a previous stay order. However, he claimed that the deputy commissioner of Ballari district, who wrote to the Cooperative Election Commissioner on June 12, has not taken steps to conduct the polls. Naik further alleged that some Congress MLAs and cooperative representatives in Ballari are dissatisfied with cooperation minister KN Rajanna. "I tried to contact Rajanna, but he is not answering my calls," Naik said. "Rajanna and I are like brothers. "Some vested interests have given him incorrect information which is why he is delaying polls."

Chartered accountant found dead in Kondapur
A 28-year-old chartered accountant ended his life at his residence in Kondapur allegedly citing lack of interest in his profession. The deceased, identified as Suresh Reddy Nirmala, a native of Vadi village in Kamareddy district, worked with JWC in Manikonda. He was found dead in his flat in SV Serenity Apartment, Raja Rajeshwara Colony, on Wednesday morning. According to an official from the Gachibowli police, Suresh left his brother's residence on June 16, stating he was going to visit his sister, but failed to return. Following a complaint, the police reached the spot and found a helium gas cylinder in the room. Preliminary probe suggested that he died from inhaling the gas. A diary was also recovered from the room in which Suresh wrote that he was not interested in the work he was doing. He was unmarried and reportedly living alone at the time of the incident. Gowda, who claimed to be Suresh's sister, was arrested by the ED on April 24 for her alleged involvement in a money laundering case. The ED officials had initially asked Suresh to appear at their office on Thursday, June 19, at 11 AM, but Suresh has requested to defer his appearance to June 23. Earlier, the probe agency stated that its officials had conducted searches at 14 locations related to the accused woman, Aishwarya Gowda and her accomplices and seized various incriminating materials valued at approximately ₹2.25 crore. The ED further mentioned that the searches, carried out on April 24 and 25 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, led to the seizure of incriminating documents, digital devices, and cash. "ED also conducted search operations at 14 locations related to Aishwarya Gowda and her accomplices on April 24 and 25, 2025, under the provisions of the PMLA, 2002. During the search operations, various incriminating documents, digital devices, and cash to the tune of approximately ₹2.25 crore have been found and seized," the post further read. According to reports, the ED arrested Aishwarya Gowda for allegedly engaging in money laundering through multiple cases of swindling wealthy individuals in Karnataka by exploiting connections to top political leaders in the state. Gowda allegedly posed as the sister of Karnataka Congress leader DK Suresh and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to gain access to wealthy doctors and businessmen. Last year, the Bengaluru police booked her in several cases of cheating.
